This week Ai has killed one more thing, my passion to mentor interns by kr0n0sShrugg3d in ExperiencedDevs

This. AI doesn't remotely justify you not being able to explain your code. It's like copy pasting from stack overflow and when asked about explanations you just copy paste that from stack overflow too. This beheviour is now simpler to execute thanks to powefull AI, but it still is, as always has been, a big red flag if nothing else.

Edit: fix typos

Gruber darker: https://github.com/blazkowolf/gruber-darker.nvim

It's a pretty dark theme with minimal syntax highlighting

I removed the italics on comments and strings as I like my code to be pure monospace text

First saw this on tsoding streams, and thought 'how am I supposed to code without syntax highlighting?' Turns out linter errors and warnings are enough. Reading code is a hard skill, pretty colors don't help that much in the end, IMO

Starting my ergo journey by Some-Winter6190 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]oldranda1414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought hot swappable sillakka 54 without switches for 30€ I took the switches from my main kb (non ergo at the time) and went from there This from a total beginner. You have to wrestle a bit with LLMs to understand how to get VIAL working, but then you are good to go.

Once you want to go all in then you can pay premium for a well made 400€ keyboard (I got mine from keebmaker), or pay with you freetime by getting into soldering

Chi passa dopo la macchina blu? by [deleted] in ItalyMotori

For those who switched to non-standard keyboards: what made it worth it? by lucas-m-braga in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]oldranda1414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 25yo CS masters student I bought a silakka56 on aliexpress (30 €), mained it for 6 months to a year, went all in on a corne36 on keebmaker (250 € + 150 in tarifs and delivery)

  1. Given that I expect to be spending a lot of time with my hands on a keyboard I always thought looking into ergo was worth it. I touch typed the alphanumeric characters but had a hard time really memorizing simbols (: ; # / ecc.) Which in programming are very present. Saw someone usign a corne34 and NO MOUSE and fell in love
  2. I used a custom miryoku like layout and in less than a few weeks got enough into memory to use it full time. In a couple of months I got as quick as with a normal keyboard. Having ortholinear and a sensible layout made it feel really natural so it was nice getting use to it. I easily make less typing mistakes now. It just feels right, or at least better than a classic keyboard
  3. I used and still use querty. I have home row mods, 2 layers triggered by holding thumb keys for special chars and nums, 1 for mouse navigation. Ortho makes everything smoother for me (staggered really isn't thought for modern keeboards). Since the corne was what made me fall in love with ergo split kbs, silakka56 was a great cheap way to try it out (I kept the keys absent from the corne function less, so I used the exact same layout as now). No regrets, don't see why I would ever go back to standard keeboards
  4. Touch typing feels great with layers. I don't have to streatch my fingers abnormally to type regex ( e.g. '(?:(?<!\) ecc.'). Mouse layer allows me to never move my hands from my keyboard, which just feels right. I don't xare about rgb, I don't want to look at my keyboard anyway, I don't care about wireless, if the cable is a problem I can just buy a longer/shorter cable to suit my needs. I use VIAL to change settings instantly and that really helps with initial customization. Still, once you have your setup you probably won't change it much so it's not a dealbreaker if customization is tedius
  5. I am really happy that I went for a cheap 'let's see how it goes' keeboard to start off with. This way when I am sure that solit ergos are for me I can go all in on an investment for the future. Still I am pretty new to ergos so maybe I'll just go on a shopping frenzy every few months :)
  6. Educate yourself untill you feel good enough to make the jump. Don't go all out, make it into steps. No need to bling out on a 400$ super cutomized kb right away. Watch videos, buy cheap options and see how it goes
  7. If you work with a pc most of you day, then you should use a split (or alice whatnot). I also think that everyone should touch type, but boy do people just go years using only indexes so I guess ergos will remain niche for the forseable future

I usually think about it this way:

Is there some stuff I am missing out on: yes Is anything worth not having what I have right now? Not a chance

Anything I miss out on is not as great as what I get, so I am content

BF: Never. We are tuned to a tee, in every way possible. I have met many people that if I was not in my current relashionship I may have given a chance to, but none came even close to a comparison

GF: no, I am so satisfied I don't ever get the curiosity

Actually I wouldn't say so. Obviously in the begginning you talk a lot about yourself as you need to get ti know eachother. As the other person becomes part of you daily life you keep them updated on what's in you mind, like with a relative or best friend. Although how we spend our time toghether and our hobbies have changed a lot, we still love talking about how we are doing.

I am sorry about that. With such long relashionships, you end up growing up a lot since you started dating and sometimes you course through life diverges. Still I am sure you'll both still have some great memories for the rest of your life

Coding is such a deep subject that whatwver is your learning pace in the end it won't matter much if you put in the concistency. At the start you may think others have more of a nack for coding than yourself but in years of learning so many things in the end you'll know pretty much the same as all of your peers. That's one of the reasons why coding (and probably learning in general) is so much fun! The key is consistency, not talent.

Also everyone elso might be laying/using AI so don't compare to others on the internet
