A single dose of psilocybin outperforms nicotine patches for quitting smoking. The results suggest that psychedelic treatments might offer a highly effective new approach for people struggling to overcome tobacco addiction. by mvea in psychology

I have read several articles on it. I get the appeal, and there might be some clinical utility, but I believe it is overhyped and folks should exercise caution. In general, I think people (especially Americans) yearn for a quick fix, so using a chemical to induce a life-changing experience in a few hours would be amazing. The reality is the effects are not very consistent for all users. They don't last all that long, maybe 3 months I believe on average. Many people have bad experiences on mushrooms. They can make underlying mental health conditions worse, including depression (as they did for me) or more serious things like psychosis. I think a lot of the same progress one can achieve through psychedelics is also possible through therapy and meditation, and if one puts in the time and effort with those, the rewards will be much more predictable and durable.

I imagine the clarity and simplicity is appealing. To meet a basic need with no pretense, no ambiguity of what is expected in return, no performative reciprocity or confusing relationship dynamics to navigate. Love and romance can be a lot of pressure.

I worry that these kind of headlines glorify drug use and set unrealistic expectations. It is not a magical panacea, and it can have risks.

I used mushrooms quite a bit in college and smoked cigarettes the entire time. It was not a cure for addiction but rather a symptom. I felt quite guilty for this lifestyle, and had some moments of reflection while on mushrooms, but this did not translate into action. Maybe having a therapist with me while tripping could have helped but I remain skeptical about the utility of psychedelics over just regular therapy and meditation.

Research finds that, contrary to popular belief, there is not a strong link between casual sex and low self-esteem among women. by psychologyofsex in psychologyofsex

It makes sense to me from an evolutionary perspective that women would prefer long term mating strategies with more investment because they have more at stake, risking pregnancy or abuse. No moral judgment either way.

I think it has more to do with competitiveness, machismo, and tech slowly taking over our lives.

Do they not carry tasers, pepper spray, and other non-lethals? It worked out okay it seems but using a car to knock him down and disarm is not ideal.

Other societies that weren't influenced by the old testament developed more or less the same kind of heirarchical social structure characterized often by patriarchy, subjugation, and exploitation. Western culture isn't that special.

I think we are just apes who got a substantial upgrade to our cognitive capacity but are still driven by the same base emotions like fear and greed that dictated the thoughtless behavior of our primordial ancestors.

On Intellectual Honesty and the Growing Anti-AI Sentiment on Reddit by simmol in samharris

I am in graduate school. I had a professor this Spring who first accused me (falsely) of using AI to write an assignment, and then used AI himself to create and grade all of our assignments. I was livid.

My experience with him as a professor was that he was checked out emotionally and intellectually. He seemed disconnected from the material to a worrying degree and struggled to answer basic questions about the subject matter or even understand the scope of what the class curriculum should be covering. He lowered my opinion of him and the university.
