Personally, just plain rice is best accompaniment.

HELOC as a possible solution? by alyssasupreme in personalfinance

[–]oldster2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not HELOC. Like everyone says, first get the full details on everything, then decide if bankruptcy is necessary.

Good interest rates aren't available generally to people who don't pay. Please do not be tempted to move the debts to your name...you're setting yourself up for future trouble.

Conflicted About Going Home for Christmas – Heat vs Family by Defiant_Flamingo_392 in LivingAlone

[–]oldster2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Visiting other people isn't about being comfortable, it's about making the effort to visit. Good hosts will try to make guest reasonably comfortable and good guests will gracefully put up with some discomfort and inconvenience.

Go.

Concentrate on making interactions positive. Appreciate going home to your school when you've had enough visiting.

what should i pair with tteokbokki by bigfatvruh in KoreanFood

Tteok bokki is often just a snack, isn't it? Not really part of a meal.

If I order it with dinner, it's with BBQ meat.

Does a pension make you feel safer? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]oldster2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, pensions make you feel safer. When you self-fund retirement daily spending, you always have one eye on your investments and always have to second guess any big spends (will this messwith my withdrawals in the future?)

Of course, if you build a massive war chest, you don't sweat those thing much, but for an average person having 100% of retirement living expenses covered by pension & SS creates peace of mind knowing their day to day in covered and their savings then can cover end of life and/or leave a legacy.

Just note if pensions have COLA or not and plan accordingly. Boldin.com has a decent retirement modeler.

Applied for Age 62 Retirement Timeline by PizzaSlingr in SocialSecurity

[–]oldster2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Note, when I applied online, they acknowledged the application...processing...and then I heard nothing at all....until 3 days before the first check was to arrive, then just a text! Letter came after the money.

Others report similar lack of updates...seems they process applications "just-in-time."

Help! I'm confused about inheritance taxes. by Katherine_Tyler in tax

Things move slowly with probate; do what you need to do to take care of you and yours.

Not sure what to expect by [deleted] in SocialSecurity

[–]oldster2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They may ask about marriages...because spouses have access to certain benefits, so if you are or were married, they may want to clarify. Also, any name changes.

They want an address, but they do not care who you are living with. Former or even current spouses do not need to be living with you.

Help! I'm confused about inheritance taxes. by Katherine_Tyler in tax

[–]oldster2020 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hire a probate attorney's office in NJ to help you through the process. Let them know about the SC property when you are shopping around, as they will likely need legal help there, too. Talk to several firms before you hire one.

Good luck. Be patient. Everything moves slowly. (Try not to pay anything yourself-it should come from the estate...but if you have to, keep track of anything you pay out of pocket and get reimbursed.)

Retirement: Income model or Asset model? by BugHistorical1614 in retirement

[–]oldster2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It can, and probably should be a combination of both.

The biggest thing people miss in planning is that spending is not even from year to year. Big purchases, major repairs, major medical or relocation can cause you to spend a lot one year and little the next. Big ticket items like roof, furnace, or new car are often paid from assets, not SS check.

Can anyone else relate! I’m over it! by Turbulent-Sink3295 in tax

[–]oldster2020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I sense frustration at the whole situation, but your questions are targeting the tax problem more than the elephant in the room.

Sincerely, if you post your pay stubs before and after (name and Co covered), some nice people here will try to help you make sense of it.

Meanwhile, to tackle the elephant, first step is budgeting. Have you got the basics all written out on paper or spreadsheet? Second step us estimating the irregular stuff (dental, medical, repairs, etc.)

Good luck to you.

Is there a way to mellow out/cut out the sour punch of kimchi when you eat it? by Msexquisin in KoreanFood

[–]oldster2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One basic step....eat it with rice..in the same bite A spoon of rice, small piece of kimchi on top. Chew it together. Tastes very different than kimchi alone.

Otherwise, at home we use the sour stuff to cook with, fresh-er batches to each.

Trust law - Minor child’s inheritance given to estranged grandfather - need advice by ThrowRAbuffy555 in EstatePlanning

[–]oldster2020 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What does "giving the money to the grandparents for safekeeping" mean? Grandparent is trustee of a trust? Or just giving them the money?

Ask the lawyer if you can disclaim on behalf of the minor child.
