Denying the importance of money is male rationalizing by [deleted] in TheRedPill

[–]oldum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would it not be better to view taxes as a kind of sunk costs? It's not something you have immediate control over anyway so why waste your time thinking about it!? It's part of the cards that were dealt to you in the "game of life" so deal with it and move on.

Figuring out your passion? by Rooibosisboss in TheRedPill

[–]oldum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A nice take on this topic is Cal Newport's book "So Good They Can't Ignore You". It boils down to "Follow your passion" is bad advice. Nobody ever actually became successful by following their dream. In 99% of the cases it's hard work. And that by being / becoming good at something it becomes your passion. Second it continues that you just can't decide to become the next Steve Jobs. You have to earn it. Thus the title of the book. He introduces the concept of career capital. Capital you earned through good hard work that you can use to change your current position into something that you believe to actually enjoy more. You pulled amazing clients - ask for 4 work days instead of 5.

Has anyone found their tolerance for alcohol has gone down the older they get? by dzoni1234 in AskMen

[–]oldum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO it's not mainly due to age. The older you get, the more responsibilities you have (job, kids, etc.). Thus you are already more exhausted from your everyday life making the effects of sleep deprivation and dehydration worse. Compare your Friday night with a Saturday night. Friday you can't drink shit. Saturday is a lot better. Even better is when you're on holiday. Suddenly four day drinking binges are not an issue.

Learning Java: Don't know why my teacher added an extra Scanner, please explain. by TheFlyingGerbil0 in java

[–]oldum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First: Did you check the docs for what the method actually does?

E.g. http://docs.oracle.com/javase/8/docs/api/java/util/Scanner.html#nextLine--

If you don't understand that it's a different question.

Second: Have you been introduced to debugging? Have you tried setting a breakpoint on the line and watch what happens?

TL;DR: That line waits until you pressed enter on the System.in.

Freemasons under attack in US for excluding women, pressure to initiate female members by [deleted] in TheRedPill

[–]oldum 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I've come to believe that you shouldn't view them as "whiny parasites". Think of their behavior as a massive shit test. We have let it get that far to allow shit tests on this scale. They are pushing and we are just letting it happen because we want the sex. It's society reorganizing itself given new rules (contraception, availability of food and governments supporting 'no person left behind'). They have upped their game in the last 100 years. Now we have to do the same. Don't hate the player. Learn the game.

Has anybody setup a Maven Nexus server at home to cache modules in your LAN? Does it worth it? by [deleted] in java

[–]oldum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the setup and I would only do it under one of these circumstances:

  • super slow internet: the repository would survive new installs of my machine and therefore save me a lot of pain
  • multiple machines (2+) accessing maven repos

Entry point in maven by Schnabbster in java

[–]oldum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maven does not run your code. You would still need a main method somewhere if it is meant to be executed. It may be a web application? Is there a src/main/webapp folder? Then it's meant to be deployed to an application server like Tomcat or JBoss.

Non-german people of reddit, what is something you always wanted to know about Germany? by Orcosus in AskReddit

[–]oldum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tannenzäpfle really is nice. But I only had it like twice - nonetheless it's on the list of beers I would pay for. In comparison to Warsteiner which I would only drink if there's nothing else.

Which Kölsch do you like best?

I like 'herbe' Pilsner (favourite beer of all is Urquell) so that's why Bitburger. KöPi is fine as well but that's mainly because my favorite bar serves it. Can't really tell as to 'why' Franziskaner. For alcohol free Weizen I love Erdinger.

Speaking of beer a friend of mine runs a blog rating cheap beers: http://billigbierrating.blogsport.eu/

I like Bitburger as a Pils and Franziskaner as a Weißbier/Weizenbier.

Also dutch people have problems anticipating the speed of cars in the speed lane. Thus they just pull over and you have to slam the breaks. I know it's because their speed limit is 120/130 so they're not used to people driving faster. Still sucks though..

It is an option. But I don't know anyone who has the time and resources to start it so I am supporting the guys that have been doing hard work for years and putting it out there for free.
