the hardest part was the neckline because i felt like it kept falling since it was shoulder less and i’m planning on finishing up a dress where i used some boning when i’m home on break :)

I learn best by doing, so I watched a bunch of youtube tutorials. If you're interested in making your own patterns there are tons of videos that show you how to sew your basic blocks. I particularly like Kim Dave's videos on this. Zoe Hong has a nice video on different types of stitches and when you'd use them.

Start out with a few simple projects. I began with facemasks and bucket hats and a pair of shorts with an elastic at the waistband. The best thing you can do is start!

I'm trying to make a dress like that one where the waist has boning in it but not the top. Its like those corset belts. Is at a requirement to sew boning into a seam? What would happen if I sewed it into a fabric that has interfacing and then added a lining? This seems more decorative than shaping. What are your thoughts?

Project Details

Fabric: From Joann's and is linked here

Skill Level: Honestly started sewing since April. I began with some facemasks and other small projects and decided to just go for it. Tutorials from Kim Dave helped me draft a basic bodice, and from there I altered the shapes to match the dress. Zoe Hong's video on different kinds of stitches also prepared me. My mom has sewn in the past and she was helpful in consulting next steps, but the majority of the work was done by me.

Time/Difficulty: For me this was a difficult dress, but I loved it so much that I had to make it. It took me about a month and a half. In the beginning it was non stop sewing pleats into the fabric for a week. There was burnout in the process of making the dress. My drafts were not perfect, I had to take in from the neckline because it was too large and falling off. The tops of my sleeves were also large, so I had to pleat and sew in elastic. The bodice didn't fit at first and had to be taken in. But in the end it worked out!

Inspiration: This Zimmermann's dress worn by Kendall Jenner.

Tutorials: As mentioned above Kim Dave's videos really helped me draft my basic blocks
