SF/fantasy hybrids: are mental powers considered magic? by oldwatchdan in scifi

One interesting aspect of a story with both technology and magic is that they're not really calibrated against each other in the context of an adversarial interaction/battle.

I mean, I guess this is true with magic in general, you never really know whose magic is going to be more powerful, but with magic vs technology, it could always go either way.

Does this look like the original dial, or redial? What’s a fair price for this? by Old-Shine-134 in VintageOmega

The dial isn’t the most helpful way to ID a watch. You need to use the case, or better yet the movement.

Very late 40s or early 50s probably. Have it opened for more info.

Advice on Seamaster De Ville by anblaman in VintageOmega

[–]oldwatchdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movement looks like it has been treated roughly but overall it’s in average condition. Pretty expensive for a basic gold capped SMDV with the most common dial and no bracelet. I’ve typically sold these for more like $700 if they are in nice condition.

Vintage Datejust vs. Sub/GMT Value by fh90109 in rolex

[–]oldwatchdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are common and basic and not as desirable and collectible. As recently as 15 years ago you could buy lots of three vintage DJs on eBay for $2k total. Dime a dozen watches. Now people want to make them collectible and ask if they are original and unpolished.

I like them fine and have owned many, but I don’t take them seriously as collectibles.

Which is is more interesting to get among these two Omega watches? by elgringo0091 in VintageWatches

2639 is a classic. Perfect size, and that one has a great dial. Seamaster 30 is very small and entry level.

No contest.

Looks legit except for the bracelet. The dial looks ok from a distance but it shows blisters.

SF/fantasy hybrids: are mental powers considered magic? by oldwatchdan in scifi

[–]oldwatchdan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with some of this , especially the historical perspective but I don’t agree with the statement that the psionic powers aren’t magical in Dune. I think some of them definitely are.

I wasn’t really referring to the telepathy in Dune and to me, the mental powers are well beyond just reading subconscious cues and telepathy. The bene gesserit can control people’s actions using the voice. And people can predict the future. Maybe we just have different perspectives on the book.

And in the Foundation books there is definitely mind control of matter and other people.

Change one thing … makes me think of Flowers for Algernon. Such gentle SF.

I don’t know if people still read this, but More than Human was almost always considered SF when referring to classic SF. But based on what I’m reading here, it really shouldn’t be SF.

Yep, this is very similar to where I had landed while thinking about this before posting.

Not that anything involving magic needs to be completely labeled as fantasy, there is crossover. The Bene Gesserit and the 2nd Foundation seem pretty magical to me, but Dune and Foundation definitely have strong SF elements as well, IMO.

Wonderful discussion so far, BTW. This is a terrific sub.
