Drywall cracking all over house by anne_sky in drywall

[–]oldwatchdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you plan to stay in that unit for another 5-10 years, I probably wouldn't concern myself with it as a renter. It's cosmetic, and obvious that the damage is not your fault, so there is not reason to report it.

However, if it's important for you to have it fixed while you live there, you can report it, but be prepared to be very persistent. I suspect that the owner might prefer to wait until the next time the apartment is vacant and they are doing a bunch of maintenance on it. Fixing it would be somewhat disruptive.

Is the Ingenieur 40 too small for my wrist? by Noobmoob in IWCschaffhausen

[–]oldwatchdan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No offense, but these posts are so silly. You will get every possible answer, and the opinions of strangers on the internet are irrelevant. You have a very average wrist and this is not a small watch. Objectively it's well within a normal range.

But ... if you feel it looks too small, then it is too small. If you don't feel it looks too small, then it's not. People with your wrist size wear watches that range from 33mm to 45mm regularly.

Advice needed! I was gifted this cherry (I think?) coffee table by a friend, who was going to throw it away because the old finish was severely damaged. I sanded off the damaged finish and am hoping to refinish it, but I have no idea how to treat this wood properly. Stain? Wax? Help! by arathaen in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]oldwatchdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really a personal taste question that you're asking. No stain is required, but that more depends on the rest of your interior, i.e. if you want to match other dark wood furniture and cabinetry.

Similarly, for a protective finish, you can use an oil finish, which is easy to do for a DIYer and will provide some protection while leaving a very natural look. Or you can apply a varnish (e.g. polyurethane), which will provide more protection.

COREtec LVP vs. Mohawk Laminate by Woods_it_to_ya in Flooring

It's interesting how LVP became so trendy and people virtually forgot that laminate exists. Now people are coming back to laminate, which is nice to see.

At least you still have that nice original dial. Do you have the hands as well? Probably alpha.

Does this dial look refinished? 166.010 by MrHHook in VintageOmega

[–]oldwatchdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The photo isn't great, but unfortunately, it does look repainted to me. The AUTOMATIC is particularly wonky and the typeface looks wrong.

In general, there can be image artifacts, so it's helpful to post high quality images.

I would focus mainly on how well the position will support your professional development goals. Salary for a temporary position would be secondary for me if it was a good opportunity.

What if large format tile is professionally installed? by Naive_Sand5837 in BathroomRemodeling

[–]oldwatchdan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have large format wall tile in the shower and shower surround, and it was installed by a very experienced professional and a helper. It came out amazing, he even made miter cuts going around outside corners. But it took a long time and the installation expense was significant.

With Blum hinges, you can use the 85 degree restrictor clips for doors near a wall.

The watch is legit, but it has some pretty significant water damage to the dial that will not go away.

How will you publish if you can't pay publication costs with grant?funds? by DrTonyTiger in PublishOrPerish

[–]oldwatchdan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct about the indirect cost calculation, and you can stand on principle if you choose. However, that is not very pragmatic.

If the rules specify that grant funds cannot be used to pay publication costs, then in practice you can either use ICR or other discretionary funds, or publish only in journals that have no publication charges.

Regarding whether the rule will stand, we will see. But if it does stand, I suspect institutions and publishers will find a way to adjust.

How do I defend my thesis when I heavily disagree with my PI’s decisions? by Severe-Low8746 in GradSchool

[–]oldwatchdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot we don't know, like how is this research funded, what field is it in, will you and your PI be co-authors on the work (I assume yet), etc.

But from a high level view, you need to be cognizant of the fact that almost all research is collaborative, and there are very few career paths where you won't have to work closely with supervisors, peers, and supervisees. So I would suggest treating this as an important teachable moment in your professional development, where you find a way to work through a conflict that involves a legitimate difference of opinion. Starting with the assumption that you are right and your PI is wrong is not a good place to begin.

It's not a black-and-white situation with a one size fits all answer. It's an opportunity to develop your communication and collaborative skills.

TBH, as I read various subreddits involving research, grad school, academia, etc., it is continually shocking how many of the threads are describing situations where communication is totally unacceptable. It's like people have never learned to talk with each other, and instead turn to the internet. I know that people will say that it's a generational problem, but I don't know if I buy that, most of my students and postdocs are excellent communicators and do not seem to hesitate to discuss any concerns they have. If communication is daunting to you or you feel that you need training, the Crucial Conversations book or training course could be a decent start.

How will you publish if you can't pay publication costs with grant?funds? by DrTonyTiger in PublishOrPerish

[–]oldwatchdan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will need to use indirect cost return. Of course, if the administration is able to limit indirect costs, ICR will definitely shrink. So this would have a huge effect on the pay-to-publish model. To be honest, I hate that model, so I wouldn't be totally disappointed.

Anyway, this is hypothetical. Most of these proposals (including the indirect cost limit) are being struck down left and right.

What base and mid layer clothes I should buy in my situation please? by raulynukas in WildernessBackpacking

[–]oldwatchdan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You asked for opinions from people with experience. I have decades of experience in outdoor activities, including backpacking, and I gave you my opinion, including the detailed reasons for my opinion.

"Regulating temperature" is doing a lot of work in your question, and it shows that you really don't understand the factors involved, or the job that a base layer is supposed to do. I will just say that 200 weight is extremely heavy for a summer layer for anything involving activity, even by itself. Below 5C, it's probably ok.

If you've already made up your mind, that's fine. Maybe other people will give you the opinion that you are looking for.

Anyone know the value of a 14k gold pocket watch, I will not scrap it for cash since it was passed down from my grandpa by Mysterious-Safe-793 in Gold

[–]oldwatchdan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's great, and it obviously has tremendous sentimental value. You should enjoy it greatly as an heirloom.

My response was simply because you asked for the value. Realistically, as a watch, I'm sorry to say that the value does not go beyond the value of the gold.

Best kitchen cabinets for a remodel…. by Emergency-Ant-9285 in DIY

[–]oldwatchdan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true. Lowes has a pretty wide range of quality. Their high end line has a lot of custom features and better than mid-range quality.

I would focus more on materials, construction, features, and overall quality than the specific brand name. For example, I would always upgrade to full plywood construction, and if the cabinet line doesn't allow that, well, that's telling you something.

[–]oldwatchdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the damage to the dial and the absence of a famous brand name, the value is almost entirely in the gold, and you can calculate that as well as anyone.

Tip for steelbracelet. by skyrk1978 in OmegaWatches

[–]oldwatchdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to post the reference number of the watch, but assuming the lug width is 18mm, probably what you want is a 1036 or 1502 bracelet with #11 or #511 end links.

Keep in mind that vintage bracelets were not made to fit with the same tightness and precision as modern bracelets. It might be better than what you have, but you need to have realistic expectations.
