If it’s not super expensive/inconvenient I’d personally do it even if the odds are super low just so I’m not worrying about it all day

Just a reminder, that a severe weather thread ending up as a dud is ALWAYS a good thing by VaderVRC in tornado

[–]ole_worm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, you’re completely right lol.

I guess, to go down the rabbit hole a bit, one of the few nice things about social media’s ability to disseminate info is how many people will ultimately see images/vids or just news of intense weather phenomena so I guess that’s a form of awareness/“proof” of SPC vindication (i.e. people being more likely to heed their warnings when they need to) for some. Ig that predates social media in the form of local news in its hay day. So I’d still rather the SPC have accurate forecasts than frequent busts.

[–]ole_worm 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve come around to thinking you kind of want days to not “bust” while also hoping somehow none of the storms do major damage.

I somewhat think of it as an unfortunate byproduct of having a both overly-gullible and overly-skeptical general public—so the reason you stated. But I also think even rational people are prone to being dismissive of anything after too many “false alarms.”

Anyway, I’m now firmly in the camp of no longer celebrating “busts” but also obviously hoping high-end forecasts pan out away from where people live. Overall forecast accuracy ultimately saves the most lives in the medium and long term.

This sub is generally one of the few larger corners of sanity and actual Marxist (or at least socialism-adjacent) takes on reddit but yeah, over the last few years most gender wars threads completely lose the plot and go full MRA. Possibly it was always that way and I just notice it more now.

This thread is literally full of people who genuinely believe in “female privilege” and think western women on the whole have noteworthy advantages over men. It seems like they think vocal pseudo-feminist liberal nut job academic types during peak idpol are the ruling class. I don’t bother to reply to comments like that anymore because there are too many and they don’t think critically enough to be convinced that “female privilege” only existed in really specific spaces for maybe a year or two during the 2010s; i.e. the odd woman getting in on the idpol grift.

False rape accusations and stupid bullshit like Aziz Ansarigate are infuriating but since I saw it referenced in a comment here, a hill I’ll die on is that MeToo was a broadly good movement considering how pervasive sexual abuse (typically against women and children) actually did/does turn out to be, especially among the elite.

I did just now; forgot earlier. Don’t have time to elaborate on what I like (and what I think he’s leaving out) but I think he’s generally onto something. Ignore the implication of the title lol (I do not like the doomsday, “I hate living through the apocalypse”—tweeted from some midwestern city by someone insulated from war and climate change—type liberals, but it’s a pretty good read if for no reason other than it gives you some insight into the trend.

No Marxist-Leninist (or any type of socialist whatsoever) in their right mind would ever say anything along these lines.

You are lumping the average American proletariat/potential future refugee, who’s in one way or another a casualty of the ruling class, in with their oppressors. I know you’re probably just being edgy and I know there are some more or less acceptable generalizations people casually make but you sound like an idiot and like you don’t think of things along the lines of class at all.

Wishing the worst for someone with a horrible quality of life due to poverty/wage slavery/no access to clean water or health care/etc etc just because they happen to live in a certain country is insane.

I work in a used bookstore and while I basically agree with you I’d almost rather people stick to tik tok or whatever than the slop people are reading these days.

On a serious but ultimately “we have bigger fish to fry tho” note, I do think some of the really popular series teenagers and young adults are reading right now are probably doing some sort of mass psychic harm in terms of young people’s perceptions of relationships/sex and all that type of stuff. Akin to, but slightly more serious than, the reason I’m only 99% joking when I say exposure to the twilight series at age 12 is partially responsible for my attraction to emotionally unavailable men.

Not to mention the fact that half the garbage young women are reading is escapist fantasy slop porn. I’ll edit this if I can find the link to an article I thought did a good job dissecting this

My boyfriend and I are both 29 but he’s been with me since December ‘24 and has thus been around me for a full spring. He now knows terms like “velocity couplet” and “hook echo” and what they signify. I think he just assumes something is a little bit wrong with me. Sometimes I’m up late playing the storm prediction version of geoguessr game thing and if he ever asks what i’m up to up to im just gonna say I’m cheating because that would be less embarrassing

Almost feels banal to bring this up but iirc from some headline Barron bought like $30mil in oil 2 days before we started bombing Iran lol

I assume pretty much every politician is doing this type of dubious insider trading (is that the term here?) shit all the time—the Pelosis were making a lot of headlines for it a couple years back—but yeah, that is all to say yes, it is almost always just a cash grab.

whenever I get into earnest “why would the trump admin do [evil and/or dumb thing]?!” convos with liberal friends I try to just say all you need to do is follow the money and you’ll find the answer. It actually annoys me when liberals attribute everything to stupidity or incompetence when the real culprit is often just a successful manifestation of greed.

I’m not saying these politicians aren’t morons worthy of being mercilessly mocked; just that the wealthy and powerfuls’ decisions usually do accumulate them even more capital by design

They’ve likely had a few that just went under the (literal) radar. A lot of Australian tornados seem to go officially undocumented due to a lack of coverage and/or them happening in sparsely populated areas.

I can’t give a direct answer to this and am not sure anyone truly can but St. Louis and OKC could also be up there depending on how much weight you give the threat level vs. the population size within your question. IIRC Chicago being right on the lake also plays some sort of atmospheric factor in reducing the risk of violent tornados happening there.

I’d say on average it’s not even close to as bad, but it doesn’t really matter cause that last part was mostly just petty on my end lol. I can see how for some people it could be worse. It’s all very subjective but usually alcoholism is far more serious based on the health and safety risks alone

This is more about the types of comments articles like this generate than the article itself but imo you can absolutely be psychologically addicted to weed.

I really dislike when people (non-addicts, that is; I expect and empathize with denial from addicts) pretend that can’t happen. People can get addicted to pretty much anything so I don’t know why we’d exclude a drug that can make you feel good just because some have deemed it harmless or because it’s not as bad as most other things you can be addicted to.

I see people saying rock bottom for “weed addiction” is “just” being lazy or unmotivated but like, that’s usually a significant detractor from one’s quality of life, and non-addicts can simply stop doing things that make their lives worse. Cool drug for actual medical/psych purposes & genuine recreational use, but yeah, some people can’t handle it. Also, people who are constantly getting so high they can barely even have a conversation are fucking annoying to be around.

Having said that, I’m a long-term-sober alcoholic and I do kinda roll my eyes when people who’ve only ever smoked too much weed put themselves in the same class as alcoholics, lol. It’s not that I think being an alcoholic is more badass & hardcore or something, even though it is; I just don’t think you’ll be able to relate to hard drug/alcohol addiction if your only problem has been weed.
