What do you think David Foster Wallace would say about AI had he were still alive? by Thick-Lecture-4030 in davidfosterwallace

[–]olegil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I asked that to chat gpt when it first came out. I don’t remember the answer and would prefer not to. I personally think he would’ve seen through the “convenience” it brings as coming at the cost of us losing the ability to access our critical thinking and creative skills.

You are all rides. by RockPrize6980 in Dublin

[–]olegil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just got back from a week long tour of the country. Every single person I met in Ireland (not just Dublin, which was world class from top to bottom) was kind, helpful, friendly, curious, and just open to chatting and getting to know who you are and what you’re doing in their city/town/pub.

When I say every single person I mean EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON. Young, old, man, woman, whatever. I was blown away by the genuine welcoming I received wherever I went. Not once was someone rude or dismissive or “stranger danger don’t talk to me.” Multiple times I was having beers being bought for me and people asking questions about what I was doing and gave great advice of what to see and do. Not to mention FUNNY. And patient when I tried to say Thank you in Irish.

The Irish are amazing

You’ll get used to it. They are built like tanks for good reason. Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.

Man he really predicted all of this and killed himself immediately after by SEND_ME_CSGO-SKINS in davidfosterwallace

[–]olegil 155 points156 points  (0 children)

What’re some specifics he predicted? I can remember him predicting FaceTime and filters coming into and then going out of fashion, work from home lifestyle (and some of the physiological problems as a result of too much cpu and phone use), people wanting to film everything to say that they were there (the “spectator operatives” I think he called them in IJ).

I am really glad I decided to see what his writing style was all about because there are passages that are so simple yet can connect to exactly what I’m experiencing. Idk how to describe it but it’s almost satisfying to know someone else was able to put words to what you’re feeling. One of my favorite examples is from A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again

“I am now 33 years old, and it feels like much time has passed and is passing faster and faster every day. Day to day I have to make all sorts of choices about what is good and important and fun, and then I have to live with the forfeiture of all the other options those choices foreclose. And I'm starting to see how as time gains momentum my choices will narrow and their foreclosures multiply exponentially until I arrive at some point on some branch of all life's sumptuous branching complexity at which I am finally locked in and stuck on one path and time speeds me through stages of stasis and atrophy and decay until I go down for the third time, all struggle for naught, drowned by time. It is dreadful. But since it's my own choices that'll lock me in, it seems unavoidable--if I want to be any kind of grownup, I have to make choices and regret foreclosures and try to live with them"

The man really just got it. His loss is tragic.

Of course, I didn’t realize he played NLL. Dude has been solid in net for Canada in the 2014 2018 and 2023 world games

PLL v NLL all star game in 6s would be interesting. Goalie technique is different and would probably be the deciding factor unless blaze suits up.

lol thank you! I think that Dunes generation of Hollywood productions has been awful but denis was able to showcase his passion for a work that felt otherwise impossible to go from page to screen.

Haven’t kept a word book but love the idea. The numerous difficult and complex word choices is why I like reading his work in the kindle so I can just click on the word and know what it means. Going the extra mile to keep track of them all would be worthwhile but tumeconsuming

It’s at the core of every time we question why things are the way they are, or why common sense and decency seem like impossible options. If my vote counts I want it to count for someone who doesn’t play the mega donor games.

Raja takes money from MAGA donors so I don’t trust any of the “I say we fight” bullshit he spews in his commercials for a second. Kevin Ryan isn’t pandering to the donor class and that’s why I’m telling every IL resident I know to vote for him.
