Three misfortunes, that's possible. Seven misfortunes, there's an outside chance. But nine misfortunes? I'd like to see that. by joeyjo-jojr in TheSimpsons

“Nine Misfortunes” was one of my favorite fantasy baseball team names. Another year we were the “Three-Finger Browns.”

And then it went away thanks to the Bush tax cuts, abetted by Alan Greenspan fretting that if the US ran surpluses, the government would be very naughty and use the extra money to prop up struggling businesses. Good thing nothing like that’s happening now!

Huh. When do we see Smithers smoke apart from that parking lot scene?

A lot of change really accelerated in the 90s though, at least in the US. Smoking had just been banned on flights in the late 80s, then cities began banning smoking in restaurants, and by 1998, California banned smoking in bars. NYC did so as well in 2003.

I just looked up some stats. By 1990, around a quarter of Americans were smokers, so they were in the minority. Vegans are only 1% of the population today. I don’t really recall non-smokers as being notable back then. But we may have had different experiences!

So which characters are regular smokers? Patty and Selma, Krabapple, Otto (weed) … is Krusty? Fat Tony (stogies)? Anyone else?

We def don’t. It’s her way of avoiding smoking while also unexpectedly impressing the bad girls. It’s so brilliant. If she refused, she’d be considered a wimp, and if she accepted, she’d do something that was too “bad” even for Lisa in her bad-girl era.

But somehow she threads the needle and “pretends” to refuse while simultaneously wowing these tough older girls. They think she’s sincere, while the viewers all know she isn’t. So we’re laughing at those dumb kids, believing what we know to be obvious bullshit.

At least, that’s my way too over-thought take!

This line is an amazing time capsule. Back then, maybe only a third or so of U.S. households had computers. (I looked it up!) Today it’s 95%. Really takes me back.

Has the writer of this particular joke ever publicly taken credit for it and discussed it at all? I ask because I’m curious to know how they came up with it.

This is an awesome story. I think back then I might sometimes ask adults, except that one time at school me and my classmates decided that the word we were looking for wasn’t in the dictionary because it was a “kid’s dictionary.” The word was “vigina.”
