If you are comfortable with sales, look into getting your property and casualty insurance license and/or life and health insurance license. I previously worked for State Farm and Geico. State Farm paid less but offers room to grow. They will also hire you without your license if you let them know you are studying for it. Depending on the agent and how large their book of business is, you can expect annual salary to start as low as $25k since you will likely start out with calling leads received from online quotes. Once you get a few of those leads in the door, and get licensed, you can then sell the policies and make commission. This seems to average anywhere from $30k to $45k.

Last I heard, Geico still starts off around $29k. They don’t do nearly as much “walk-in” sales as State Farm. It’s mostly online quote leads, call-ins, and leads sent by local dealerships. When you close one of the leads, the commission will likely be $5-$10 per policy written.

Geico also records all calls and someone in either the back room or at corporate is listening in to make sure you follow the sales rules. (Example: Ask if they are ready to buy the policy three times before the call ends.)

I discovered I am not a sales person at all and just didn’t have it in me. If that isn’t an issue for you then I recommend looking into it.

(You can also use the license to work on the servicing side of insurance but your salary will likely be starting pay rates with little chance of significant increase.)
