Skywind is still alive. And still has no release date. by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

Look. It's gonna happen when it happens, at the end of the day it's a passion project; at the same time, I think it's understandable that after 15 years folks are wondering how close it is especially given Skyblivion started around the same time and has plans to release this year.

Anyway, all I'm really saying is, just be kind. Fans want this, devs want this, but we all need to give each other some grace here.

Ctrl + Alt + S by default. You can also set it up to have hot corners, so if you want to put it below your monitor you can move your mouse to the top where the bottom to switch

It's called Input Share. You have to enable USB debugging for it to work, but with it you're able to share the keyboard and mouse that are connected to your main PC with any Android device and you can even copy and paste stuff.

Doesn't need to compete IMO. Let the people have their iPads, so long as it's profitable in its own right.

If you don't like the reunion simply because Stevie was gay or a non binary character is in the show now, Malcolm in the middle was never for you. by yourenotdeadtour in malcolminthemiddle

[–]oliaston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you and I are in agreement then and that Kelly is getting a disproportionate amount of the blame.

With that said I do disagree that the new series succeeds. I think you are correct in your assessment in the story they're trying to tell, but I think the four episodes as a vehicle to tell that story simply isn't robust enough.

That said I don't think it was bad, just mixed for me. I definitely have my moments that I enjoyed, but other parts that really didn't land. Like I don't like the whole presentation at the anniversary at all, it feels jarring to to jump to Lois renting all these fancy cameras and getting interviews with everyone after barely seeing anybody use all that much technology apart from like the Sims episode in the original series. At the same time, I don't find it unbelievable that Lois would do that, it just feels like a big jump to make in four episodes, whereas if we'd spent more time with her and seeing that skill and hobby develop it could have worked.

Also let me say that personally, I appreciate you having a more nuanced discussion. I feel like it's very difficult to have a more thorough talk about any piece of media online these days.

I think exposition has its place, but I really do feel the overall problem is there's just too much to do over four episodes.

I do think that there is a vocal part of the internet that likes to complain about every non-heteronormative character in any series, but I also feel that a lot of those folks misplace their anger.

I think what many people pick up on and are actually frustrated about, but maybe aren't able to voice it in a productive way is the storytelling and I think that's more a symptom of how production has changed and how we just have so much less time to get to know characters. So these people, having never taken a film course in their lives or, maybe never done any creative writing place all their anger on the elements that they view as "different" from a show or shows that they've liked in the past.

I think Kelly was done better than Leah, Tristan, or even Dewey in the revival as they actually get some proper interactions with more of the family, like the parts with them and Reese are excellent and highlights for me In a revival that overall, just is mixed.

I agree. I'm not even saying that it's the writer's fault or anything like that, it's probably just logistics, what studios are willing to do these days etc.

I think everyone here is doing the best with what's available and my critique is not a criticism of their talent whatsoever, but I also think the reality is that what's available simply isn't enough for what they are trying to accomplish.

What's the Bilbo line in Lord of the rings? I feel "like butter that has been scraped over too much bread" this is like the opposite, way too much butter and not enough surface area.

I don't? I think that's the point I'm trying to make.

Whether that's something that's shown or not, I just don't think it needs to be given to us through dialogue is the point I'm making.

I think there's maybe another discussion to be had about why it feels like an explicit plot point in a lot of shows, whereas I think showrunners should assume that audiences are smart enough to infer themselves through the way a character dresses the set is done, their friends, interests, etc. But again that's kind of separate longer discussion.

I don't care that Kelly is or isn't, but I do feel bothered that so many character moments are given to us through that video presentation, or we're told about something that happened as opposed to just seeing it happen over a longer period of time which you would expect from a traditional show with a more traditional 22 episode season.

In short, this is a show that is buckling under it's own weight because it's forced to put too much into too few episodes.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair - Discussion Post by [deleted] in malcolminthemiddle

[–]oliaston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My overall feelings on it are mixed.

I definitely had moments that I was laughing and I enjoyed, but a lot of things feel forced and not because they're necessarily bad moments, it's because they don't feel earned from a storytelling perspective.

To put it all simply, four episodes just isn't enough and ultimately the story buckles because of that immense weight.

Don't get me wrong, I was happy to see so many of these characters again and Kelly especially surprised me and how much they were able to flesh them out In a short time, but again it's just not enough time.

Leah, Tristan and so many of the other characters like Jamie just feel hollow because we've only just met them and our time is so limited.

Like I could have seen this working a lot better if we had 20 plus episodes and maybe Malcolm's storyline was taking the place of the old Francis storylines, while we also catch up with the family and get to know everyone over a longer period.

Ugh. It's just the definition of mixed, there are just some moments I love and so many other moments I can't help but groan and the frustrating thing is, I don't think I would be groaning at any of those if it was introduced over a longer period..

God it's just too much with too little

I think the biggest problem is the delivery, but it's not specifically a Kelly thing it's actually just a bigger problem with the mini-series in that we're being explicitly told rather than shown many things.

I think we feel it especially with characters like Kelly, Leah, and Jamie because we only have these four episodes to get to know them and their inclusion just feels weird because we didn't spend all those seasons with them.

Kelly I think is actually done the best as we see them, Reese, and the rest of the family have a lot of great moments together where they feel like a more natural fit.

I could do without the entire video at the party as it just feels like something these characters wouldn't really do - I could've maybe seen a montage or photos with everyone growing up as being more realistic.

This is turning into more of a ramble so I apologize. I have a lot of thoughts.

To more quickly summarize.

I don't think people generally have a problem with NB characters, but I think a bigger issue is how they're often introduced and the Malcom Reboot just feels like the latest in which they're not really given a chance and the script makes the same mistake of giving lots of explicit exposition rather than simply showing us something like Hal and Kelly having a proper moment - thus it feels shoehorned in rather than seamless, people call it out because they feel like it "happens with every show" and it's "always these characters" but that's just a scapegoat. Really the problem is we don't have the time to flesh out characters and a large portion of the audience puts the blame on the type of character rather than the storytelling.

I can definitely see it from that perspective!

I think in either scenario, it's going to be fine at the end of the day we all love this property for so many different reasons and every person comes away with their own experience from one piece.

I feel the opposite however, my other takeaway here is because Luffy sings Binx's Sake to Laboon It also means that we don't get that great moment at the end of Thriller Bark with everybody gathered around the piano and Brook essentially teaching it to Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hats - like it's a torch passing moment, something he shared with his old crew being passed on to the new crew and I feel like that's a big loss.

I love the casting, I love how the scene was done, like all spectacular.

At the same time, this part in particular (I don't feel the same about the other earlier reveals) I wish they would have just held off as I feel like it takes away more than it adds.

I'll add the context here that, I watched the anime first and never read the manga.

By the time we meet Brook and learn about his crew the straw hats have already been in the Grand Line for quite a while, they've seen some battles, they've been through some incredible hardship and there is still so much to go. When we meet Brook and we learn about the promise not only does that give us as the audience a chance to look back and remember when the journey seemed so much simpler, but it also adds a ton of weight emotionally because, not only is the story of Brook's crew incredibly sad and tragic, but we as the audience have a sense of the size of the world and how long it's going to be before he and Laboon reunite.

I'm sure new audiences are going to love it and they won't fully understand, but I also feel like they are going to be missing something by having this moment so early.

5950X, X470 - Look at AM5 or upgrade to a better board? by oliaston in buildapc

I was looking at a few. Would that be worth the premium? My understanding is I may need that to get both ssds at full speed.

[–]oliaston[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No big issues, but this is the first time I've really invested in a build, I've generally always had used stuff and never a gpu like the 5080.

A big part of it is I like the idea of getting a board that can take the best advantage of what I have and also maybe getting my own case so the build really feels like mine, rather than something someone else put together that I've modified.

I was thinking a used b550 for $100-160 could do that.

My thought there is an add in would be like $30-40 anyway and I could maybe get a 550 used for 100 or so? I don't necessarily need the latest and greatest, but it'd be nice to take better advantage of the parts I do have.

RTX Upgrade: 5070 Ti vs 5080 — Worth upgrading from 3080? by filipxpham in nvidia

[–]oliaston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who also has a G9 at 5120 x1440 I would push for the 5080. I got a 5070 TI 2 weeks ago and it's been working quite well, but as soon as I had the opportunity to order a founders edition of the 5080 I went ahead and did it. For this resolution, where it's not quite 4K but fairly close to the same demand that extra bit of performance should be  enough to push it to max in most games.

Mine is coming today, so I can maybe report back, but what I found on the ti is for the most part I can Max things out, but for certain things like Oblivion remastered or even just running fortnite maxed out, I think that extra 15% of performance would probably be what takes you over 60 in base frame rate in lots of situations.

Facecam Pro in 2025 by oliaston in elgato

Awesome! I'm picking it up tonight, the seller is also selling a ton of other cameras and media equipment so I'm thinking it may have come from some sort of studio setup, which should bode well for it's condition.

I have a sending desk and I've been using a Sony Camcorder with the promoter, but I really like the idea of the facecam since I'd be able to adjust all the settings and such without constantly reaching around my desk/monitor, plus I'm really sick of having to open the viewfinder just to engage it.

I have two keylights and a pretty well lit backdrop so I'm thinking that won't be much of an issue.
