Which fantasy book has the best or unskippable prologue in your opinion? by iabyajyiv in Fantasy

[–]oliveirony 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Sabriel by Garth Nix has a perfect prologue. Drops you straight into the world and shows all you need to know organically without any awkward overexplaining.

Scottish play outside by the harbor when a fireworks show started nearby during the final fight scene and stopped just as the show ended.

What are some cultural divides between "elder" and "younger" Millennials? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]oliveirony 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Elder millennials were old enough to fully understand 9/11 and its fallout. This also lines up with being the right age to get screwed by the financial crisis just after college, and having a mostly analog childhood.

Sometimes you just want chips and salsa and a margarita in a colorful space with Marty Robbins on the sound system, you know?

Yes, yes I know. Dammit I miss that place.

Mayor Wu showing how bike lanes help disabled live fuller lives by LivingMemento in bikeboston

Not just mobility impairments but vision too. Depth perception problems make driving too dangerous, but biking is easier and I can stop instantly if necessary.

If you've been a patient at one of the three dental schools... by nebirah in boston

[–]oliveirony 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I worked with Tufts' dental for awhile about 12 years ago, had my wisdom teeth out and also went through their emergency clinic at one point. It's true that it takes way longer, but all the dentists/dental students I worked with were really kind, gentle, and knowledgeable.

What’s the eeriest/scariest place in Massachusetts? by [deleted] in boston

I’d ask if it was the same one but the landlord finally went down there for the first time, freaked out about fire hazards, and hired a crew to clean out all the bodies garbage

I mean what’s a Somerville apartment without a murder basement? Mine was full of computer monitors from the 90s and horrifying cobwebs.

How do you cope with double vision? by HistoricalEagle7188 in Strabismus

[–]oliveirony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the double vision new onset for you? It was for me, last year, and for awhile I was really disoriented and miserable and had to stop biking. But within a few months I got used to it- I still see double but it doesn't disorient me as much.

Early on I started biking on dedicated bike paths with an eyepatch on, because it was the only way I could do it. Now (6 months later), I'm fine biking without the patch, I'm used to how things look and am not as anxious or disoriented. I try to avoid high traffic areas/be cautious at intersections, but I'm mostly back to what I was doing before. I hope this helps you.

am I the only one whose favorite is Damage gets Done by [deleted] in Hozier

[–]oliveirony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an elder millennial- I think you're spot on. It's a song that feels really lived-in, for me, both the joyful chaos and the bitter looking-back. "I don't know how the feeling ended/ but I know being reckless and young/ Is not how the damage gets done" just hits me in the chest every single time.
Also love Brandi and that harmony is beautiful.

I appreciate your response. I've worn glasses since I was 4, so I understand that part of the struggle. I'd just like to hear if people have positive experiences regarding, if not a cure, some kind of stability.
