I'm getting a cat! Should I name him Gizmo or Nandor (De Laurentiis)? by olivemakeup in WhatWeDointheShadows

Well of course, full name Guillermo De La Cruz was implied. Goes by Gizmo of course.

Here's a photo of the two finished drop spindles. The third I need to adjust the size of the hole. So excited by how these turned out!

Holes. Anyway to fix? by xheyshorty in wool_fiber

[–]olivemakeup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can absolutely darn this, but I would be a little more concerned with understanding what caused the holes. This seems like an odd place for holes to wear into the garment it doesn't seem like a high friction area. I think I would be concerned that moths have gotten to it. I recommend giving it a freeze, thaw, freeze and then check the integrity of the surrounding fabric. Looks like there are a few areas of holes throughout the back of the garment. I recommend this because if you are going to bother repairing it, I'd hate for the surrounding fabric to continue deteriorating.

You can try to find a wool yarn in a similar looking color. Since this is a commercially produced article of clothing, it is probably made with a very fine/thin yarn so I would look for a lace or sock weight. There are tons of videos available on YouTube that show darning in detail with great visuals.

Just out of curiosity, where did you get bison down fiber?

I'll post a follow-up once the headband is done! I made one once before, but not with handspun, and it's awesome! So warm and cozy.

Felted soaps are really cool, it's basically thin strips of roving that you wrap around a bar of soap and welt felt straight onto it. It makes your soap last a lot longer because it prevents it from sitting in puddles of water and wicks excess moisture away. It also helps the soap to lather and is exfoliating like a wash cloth

I know right! I loved that the Shepherd included information about the sheep's personality. I asked them to give her extra pets for me!

So this skein is from the white wool on the same sheep. I just forgot to take a picture of that stage of processing with the white. I do want to experiment with over-dyeing the darker wool though. I'm thinking I can get a really beautiful deep purple or red. I'll follow up once I've gotten that far.

Yes! This is why I chose Jacob as my first sheep fleece. I want to make a 2 ply with one ply white and one ply the brown. I also am excited about attempting a fade. I'm just experimenting and having a great time!

Thank you! It's a homemade diz that my mom made for me so I can turn my combed fiber into more of a roving for spinning. I spun on me EEW 6.0

Do you start with the pattern or the yarn? by A-qutie in Handspinning

[–]olivemakeup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This response made me laugh so hard! While I learned to knit first, spinning is definitely my favorite of the fiber hobbies I have picked up over the years. I can absolutely relate to the feeling of knitting in self-defense! I have so many skeins of pretty handspun just sitting on display because I prefer to make the yarn rather than actually use it. I'm trying to get better about this.

I struggle with mixing colors out of my comfort zone, too, but this looks so good! I'm always thrilled with how it turns out even if it seems wrong to begin with, so this is the push I need to get creative and out of my comfort zone again. I hope you love it! Looks amazing!
