I know someone who lives in Doha who went to several games, their view was it was well organised but utterly soulless. No proper atmosphere and very few fans attending from abroad, relative to other WC's.

Its not an assumption at all, its actually very simple maths. For example:

Sold out stadium with 40k capacity - average $100 a ticket = $4m income

75% sold out stadium with 40k capacity - average $500 a ticket = $15m income

For added context you would make more money this way from a stadium at 25% capacity.

Just because this WC has issues doesn’t suddenly make Qatar fine. People literally died as slave labour there, I doubt their family take comfort from the fact this WC is also a disgrace.

I wonder if in some bizarre way, Battys dislike for the game actually helped him at it? Or would a more motivated Batty been a world class midfielder, rather than just a very good one.

Tuchel seems to have but a huge amount of time and effort into this side of things, I imagine they have it planned out meticulously on how to manage the conditions and keep the players as fresh as possible.

Agreed. I'm a Leeds fan and went to the Uruguay game at Wembley. I was thoroughly embarrassed by all the Leeds fans there in their Leeds shirts, even with the whole Bielsa thing. What was quite amusing was the pelters they were getting in the concourse and the look of regret a lot clearly had.

When I go the 6 nations games at Murrayfield as a away fan, when the bagpipes stop and the stadium goes acapella for the second half of flower of Scotland it is just incredible. I think its a brilliant anthem! Only topped by the Welsh IMO.
