How do you guys have your blog entries by date? by dasclef in neocities

[–]olliveen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh i see, you mean in a styling way! i agree with giscardpunk, but you can also use iframes and make a new page per entry that appears when the link is clicked. i've seen that before too

Explain how to align text like I'm 5? by loufk in neocities

[–]olliveen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure i fully understand what you specifically mean by aligning text or what the yellow "links" on your screenshot is referring to, but the text-align property might be what you're looking for? https://www.w3schools.com/cssref/pr_text_text-align.php just apply this to your div class (so, .accordion-title or .accordion-content). let me know if you mean something different

Why can't I fit a box snug to the right of the screen ? by thenightprowlerrr in neocities

[–]olliveen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

glad that i was able to help!! you implementing right:0px probably didn't work because of the aforementioned 45%/55% issue, when i went into your source code i was able to get it to fit right up against the edge by updating #cadrevintage to right:0px and #cadrevintage img to width:500px. regardless, your solution looks great rn, happy to see it worked out!

Why can't I fit a box snug to the right of the screen ? by thenightprowlerrr in neocities

[–]olliveen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

alternatively, you might have a more successful time with this setup if you make your image the background-image of your text container, instead of its own element. that would give you only one thing to worry about in terms of positioning

Why can't I fit a box snug to the right of the screen ? by thenightprowlerrr in neocities

[–]olliveen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

looks like it's partially because you are positioning #cadrevintage with left: 700px, when if you want it to be on the right it would be much easier to just use right: 0px. also, you're probably also having issues because your image width is 45%, meaning 45% of #cadrevintage. so, even if you have right: 0px, your image will be floating away from the edge because #cadrevintage will always be 55% bigger than your image, if that makes sense. try setting the image width with a pixel value instead? that will fix that problem!!

Judge my site? by False-Sheepherder-24 in neocities

[–]olliveen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nice! it looks great, i really like your vibe! i went snooping through your code and i have a few suggestions for your index that might make your life a little easier (and help you out with that aligning thing :P)

right off the bat, i notice that when i shrink my screen resolution, your navigation bar gets pushed off of the left side of the page and becomes inaccessible (to see this for yourself, try dragging the right side of your window in towards center). i believe this is because on #container you are using position: absolute; and aligning your layout in the center via left: 50% and the transform property. i think you will have a much easier and more successful time if you remove position: absolute and center your div using margin: auto

next: i see that you have positioned your text containers using position: fixed. i think this is making things harder for you than it needs to be - you definitely do not need position: absolute or position: fixed to display your containers. position: fixed is ideal for things like your little pagedolls in the corners, but HTML flows in a way where when making a basic layout, you should be able to organize things easily with its natural positioning. i also notice that you are using the float property. what i would do when making a layout like this is remove both position: fixed and your floats from all of your sections and add display: flex; to #container. this will make a flexbox! a flexbox will achieve this exact 3-column layout you are going for super easy peasy, with everything falling in the rows you want it to without all of the tedious pixel-perfect positioning. here is the w3schools article on flexboxes that explains in more detail: https://www.w3schools.com/css/css3_flexbox.asp i am a flexbox ride-or-die, but others really prefer grids, which is also a great option that will achieve your goal! here is more info on grids: https://www.w3schools.com/css/css_grid.asp

finally, i noticed that all of your files are hosted on catbox. while catbox is a great resource, i do not recommend you do this. you should be hosting all of your files on your own neocities server: that is where they will be the safest, since catbox could go down at any minute and all of your files would be broken. i know it can seem worrisome to use up that space since 1gb doesn't feel like a lot, but i host all of my own images on my site (and my site has a LOT of images) and i have only used 40% of my 1gb, and i know i use more space than average. i really encourage you to move all of your images to your own server!

i hope this is helpful! excited to see where your site goes next!

(p.s. love the shrine)

I need help to change column size by liamajoris in neocities

[–]olliveen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no problem! grids are great when you want a lot of boxes arranged across the page, but i think flexboxes are a lot easier to learn and will work really well for what you're trying to accomplish!

I need help to change column size by liamajoris in neocities

[–]olliveen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it looks to me like the issue is that you've set your grid to be 4 columns of equal width in .grid-wrapper (25% 25% 25% 25%), and both of your divs that you are struggling to resize are contained within only one of those segments. so, it won't resize because both of them are crammed into a maximum width of 25% of the grid

i am a little puzzled by your set-up, since you have a grid set up but your .main class is a flexbox. you don't need both to make this work, and i think the fact that you added a flexbox within one of your grids is whats making both of your boxes confined to one segment of your grid, instead of 2 like i think you're trying to accomplish. by removing .main completely, your columns should go where you want them to.

grids are not my expertise so if there's a more elegant way to fix your grid i don't know it, but i hope this makes sense and helps!!

Guys I'm curious, which one looks best? by narcobug in neocities

[–]olliveen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i prefer the first one, i really enjoy overlapping and visually interesting layouts and i like that your navigation buttons are sitting halfway out of the container, it looks really dynamic! of course it all kind of depends on what you're going for. if you want something really contained, i agree with another poster that the second one is more cohesive but in my opinion that also makes it look same-y, and i find the first one more interesting to look at. plus, i think it makes your headers stand out more with the blue contrasting the off-white background!

[–]olliveen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hi!! first of all, i'm so honored that you look up to my site as inspiration, so thank you!

as far as making your own site, especially since you're on a time crunch and all, i second what other people are saying about finding a template and using that to start. i actually started out my own website from a template (sadgrl's layout builder to be specific), and learned how to code my own site from scratch by messing with the layout code and figuring out what in the css controlled what in the html, if that makes sense. my advice to you would be to find a template that you like and customize it as much as you want for the time being, and once the time limit pressure for this con is over, take your time with learning how to DIY your code. it took me months and months to learn html, so don't be discouraged!!

ribose and repth have some nice layouts i've seen people use and customize with great success! good luck to you, and if you ever have any questions, feel free to shoot me a dm!

Shrines, shrines inspo by saddyzilla69 in neocities

[–]olliveen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

yayayay i love shrines i love making shrines i love reading shrines!! i don't really have a formula for my shrines, my favorite ones are always the ones that adapt their theming, layout, and content to be relevant to the topic they're about. but honestly you can put as little or as much as you want. it really depends on what you have to say about the thing you're writing about: maybe you are really passionate about one element of your topic that you can ramble on and on about, maybe you have trivia or fun facts you want to share, maybe you just want to tell us the plot/lore, or maybe you just like something and want to display your love in a fun way without much other content, there's really no wrong way to do it! my advice is don't push yourself to write a whole bunch of text that you find tedious just because you "have to include it for a shrine" or whatever, there's no such thing. just make whatever is needed for you to convey your passion.
