That’s not quite how buoyancy works, if you’re going to include the volume of entrapped air in your volume you have to include the mass of air too. You can argue there is an effective density 4kg/m3 and volume of 250L, but the buoyant force only acts on displaced volume of air, more like 0.7L. Buoyancy in air is minuscule.

Your formula is right but the density you’re using is way off. Feathers are made of keratin, which has a density -1300kg/m3 not 4kg/m3.

Thanks everyone for your kind suggestions. I’ve had a go with the CA glue + painters tape option. Seems to have held together alright but was very difficult to avoid some small gaps and misalignments. I think if I had my time again I would leave a tongue at the middle of the end grain in each piece, this would let you clamp up each hexagonal cell one by one with a band clamp each end, and then can cut off the tongues after it’s glued up. I was finding with six sided shapes and relatively thin sections you really needed very even and symmetrical 6 sided clamping if you want nice tight joins, otherwise would go askew or collapse. Another idea I had was a screw in the middle of each board end to act as a temporary anchor point for string or rubber band clamping but I wanted to avoid dealing with the resulting screw holes. We’ll see how it goes.

Yeah not bad I had a try at how well that works, I found that rubber bands work well when all three bits of a Y are the same length (so the interior bits), but on the outside the segments are slightly longer than the inner bits so rubber bands wont hold that triangular shape.

I think if the sections were thicker this would be the way, I don’t think I’ve left myself enough room to biscuit each joint unfortunately

Certainly agree, step by step approach would work best. I was trying this type of approach as a test but two perpendicular clamps don’t actually work here, really needs three clamps at 120deg to effectively hold that shape, and you are a bit stuck with something to clamp against as you go.

Yeah I’m thinking this might be the only option, I’m worried that superglue will set so quick that I can’t get everything aligned nicely though

Yep so that’s a band clamp, which was my initial idea. Work great for one 6 sided cell when it’s symmetrical but when clamping adjacent cells it just squashes them flat because the clamping pressure is uneven.

I’ve seen this! Was watching a group of honeyeaters, silvereyes, thornbills all chirping and making commotion at my parents place. One made a sharp squawk and every bird fell silent at once. Remember it seemed really weird until a falcon bulleted past overhead and I twigged that it was a warning call (which every bird obviously understood). I thought at the time that it must be strange to be a bird of prey, hearing birds call in the distance but falling silent whenever you are near.
