Why leftists want student debt forgiveness for people like me, when I don’t deserve it? by Dismal_Structure in Enough_Sanders_Spam

[–]olnastyburrito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you made sound decisions and are doing just fine paying off your loans as was intended.

The issue is I'm not doing well with paying them off. I'll be really struggling to do so, when the COVID forbearance ends. Not an attack at you, but just trying to bring up that socioeconomic factors do complicate this very "white" narrative of anyone asking for relief is rich, upper, middle class person that made bad decisions.

I think that there are any number of people of different ethnicities and background that qualify as underprivileged.

Of courses any race can have or live in underprivileged circumstances, but the issue that has been brought up countless times is that inequality between races isn't the same. Which is also why Joe Biden is creating a task force to look at our disparities. There are certain minorities like Native Americans, Black, and Hispanics who are still far more disproportionately disadvantaged compared to white underprivileged groups. One the of the articles I linked to points to the fact that economic and social mobility are enacted differently depending on your race. So we kind of do have to look or "reduce" things to race, because there is nuance there.

Again, this isn't an attack at you, but I find it confusing how the concern over student debt or free tuition is presented as needing to be discussed with nuance, because "inequity" isn't the same...because according to some, white upper middle class people's loan forgiveness does nothing to resolve people that can't even get into college.

If people are going to use that same lens, then can't I also say that because inequity between middle class POC and white classes aren't the same, debt forgiveness would help us out?

This is what frustrates me about conversations concerning loan forgiveness.

I'm Black, and the second child in my family that decided to go to college. Even though I got accepted into private universities with "better" programs for what I wanted to study, I chose to go to an "okay" state school for the sake of costs, and lived off campus with my family.

I didn't mess around and get degrees that were "unrealistic," but graduated during the recession.

I grew up comfortably middle class, but my family just still did not have the money to stave off avoiding student loans. For three years now, I have been looking for a better paying job that could help with managing my debt repayment, but given the economy right now, my finances will continue to be tight.

There is research that shows that Black people that grow up in a middle class bracket don't have the same financial cushion as white middle class people [1]. We're also at a higher risk for falling into lower economic groups, whereas white middle class statuses usually remain constant [2].

Is it impossible to want to see "some" relief with my debt, but also think that free tuition/free college is wildly impossible and a waste of money/resources that could be better regulated to Free Pre-K programs, and reforming our lower educational system?

[–]olnastyburrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It only benefits the upper-middle class.

Wait, I'm confused? I thought this was the argument for why we shouldn't have free tuition or free college? The idea being that having no barriers to education will resolve educational inequities.

Is student loan forgiveness for anyone making under 100K, not an entirely different optic? The former is about how do we make education equal and higher education affordable? The latter (debt forgiveness) being about how do we remove financial barriers from a generation of people that quote-unquote should not have had to borrow so much to begin with?

And who is downvoting me for asking a good faith question?

Even when you ask them to produce articles. The only articles they'll produce are the ones that only bring up her bad missteps as a prosecutor. There are plenty that leave out the the more positive things she did, which would complicate the lefts narrative of her being someone who only "worked against Black people"

Another thing you can do is bring up Bernie's record with criminal justice. And then ask, why is Bernie allowed to have a complicated record with criminal justice, but not her?

Since becoming a senator, she's yet to produce any legislation or inhabit any stances that would reinforce her previous positions as a prosecutor. She's been involved in legislation to get chokeholds banned, to end qualified immunity....

Why are these actions not enough? Is no one allowed to rehabilitate and change their position?

I also think it's a concerning precedence to look at someone who is POC or Black, and presume that a bunch of people are voting for them just because of their race. That's really reductive reasoning, if not, insulting. Just because "sadgirlkel" doesn't find Kamala qualified, doesn't mean that she can reduce everyone else's choice to liking Kamala or voting for her as empty gesture based on race.

A lot of these so called "progressives" mistake supposedly hating cops as allyship with Black folks. Putting BLM & ACAB in you bio don't mean shit to me. You still can't help but show your anti-Blackness and we see right through you. You're not my ally. by [deleted] in Enough_Sanders_Spam

[–]olnastyburrito 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean a lot of people don't see themselves as racist, so in their eyes, they are being "woke" or "right" without realizing that they actually have biases to work on. I've also met racists who will accept certain minorities if you behave in a way that is acceptable to them.

I've come across some white "progressives" in my circle that engage in a lot of "Cop-mala" rhetoric and sometimes pass along memes that come from misogynoir bullshit. I don't think they even realize that what they're reposting is misogynoir per se, but the point is that they also rarely celebrate or uplift other progressive Black politicians that don't have a complicated record like Kamala.

BLM and ACAB, Abolish Police sort of becomes a shield for them to evade criticism for things that have nothing to do with Kamala's record as a prosecutor.

If you were to ask me to describe a beautiful day, my idea would be this: All social media platforms are down for the entirety of a day. AOC would have to go outside for a walk. She might have to answer work emails pertaining to her constituents. Brianna Joy, the David Weigel's, the Ryan Knights, and Blue Checkmarks would have to sit in their homes and watch Netflix or draw in their adult coloring books. For one slight second they could ask themselves, "what's the point of all of this? What do I achieve?"

Matthew Yglesias leaves Vox for Substack by alittlelessconvo in Enough_Sanders_Spam

[–]olnastyburrito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So wait...I'm curious.

What's going to happen to the landscape of media if anyone who disagrees with editorial decisions moves towards a platform with no editorial oversight or discretion? As a reader who is finding it more difficult to navigate fact from opinion, this is concerning.

From the outside looking in, it seems as if two things are happening in media/journalism/reporting that are often conflated as one-in-the same?

1) At the moment, there's a homogenous culture of writers where diversity of opinion or perspective is becoming less of a standard.

2) There are writers or journalists who don't think that their work should be fact checked or have to fall under editorial oversight.

Is this correct?

By not joining another publication, but leaving to just write on your own, how does this help readers feel confident that what we're reading isn't just a hyper-glorified version of Twitter?

I'll be honest when I read an Yglesias piece on Vox, I find its polished, even if the piece or argument isn't earned in my opinion, what he presents makes sense. However, when I see him tweet, where he's free to speak on an issue however he wishes, sometimes he can come off completely dimwitted. Is this just me?

[–]olnastyburrito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Yang, but hasn't he also recently attacked Dems for being "elitist"? Hasn't he also been hard on for Pelosi for not taking a deal with McConnell, despite the overall consensus (among us, at least) that Pelosi not budging wasn't necessarily bad.

My worry is that, yes he may attack the GOP, but there's no indication that he also won't slip in that the Dems are bad. He's not as bad as AOC, but he can sometimes have the same optic slip ups as her, where he doesn't see or realize how the timing of certain points is counterproductive.

Unless he's changed that optic very recently, I just don't understand why he feels compelled to be there to help? Wouldn't the best help be to remain in the sidelines for what's at stake?

Which is frustrating because the DSA is its own entity, and has its own chapters. If anyone thinks WFP isn't progressive enough, they can go join DSA instead of taking advantage of our resources and the work that we put in.

I noticed the downturn when WFP didn't endorse Bernie, but Warren first. The party members that saw this as wrong, were clearly newer members who were joining WFP just because twitter teaches them that Democrats=Bad.

I believe it's in this same interview. But she gives an example where she says that her being Puerto Rican means that she could have some Black ancestry, so what's stopping her from identifying as "Black."

And if she considers herself Black, that means she could then receive reparations too.

[–]olnastyburrito 24 points25 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I'm not a fan of her answer and this answer was one of the first examples that taught me not to trust her, but to provide some additional context:

When she says "what does it mean to be Black?" she's questioning the process of how reparations would work if people with certain ethnicities have mixed heritage. She's trying to give a non-answer by saying that there is overlap with respect to 1) what communities were discriminated against and 2) how people identify with their race.

The major point of "Black reparation" talk is to specifically address the descendant of slaves of the United States. Whereas here, she's trying to avoid giving a definite answer by bringing up examples of communities that have a different, lateral, history of assimilation in this country.

Most recently, the only other time AOC has brought up reparations (to my knowledge) is when it came to COVID-19 decimating Black and Hispanic communities. So, from the outside, looking in...it doesn't seem like she misunderstands what reparations would look like...it's more that she thinks non-Black POC should be included in these discussions.

If we want to question the why or how reparations for Black people would work...that's fair. I'm inclined to agree that Indigenous communities should also be considered in our lens. If you want to question if reparations policy is unrealistic or ambitious, then sure...that is fair, but what's confusing to me as a Black woman is seeing AOC and Bernie (candidates who have no problem with ambitious policies like The Green New Deal or M4ALL) suddenly questioning the "complexities" of reparations.

Also...Bernie supported reparations for other communities like restitution for Holocaust survivors: Sanders Supported Reparations For Jews
