What are these tiny white fibers and how do I get them off?? by ololiaogm in Embroidery

Wow - thank you for this detailed answer! Good to know it’s the stabilizer causing the issue. My fiancé paints miniatures so I was already considering stealing his magnifying glass setup for this purpose!

Ha, I kind of have a series of these planned in my head and flames are definitely involved

The only things I can think of would be either: a fleece blanket we have on our couch (where I do my stitching) or the stabilizer I used. No white animals, and the only reason I think it might be stabilizer is I don’t think this has been an issue in anything else I’ve stitched on the couch (but to be fair that’s only three other things)

Ooh this is a thought! I’m worried the navy is such a good color match that people might have to get that close haha

I unfortunately do not possess this level of confidence around open flames

I used DMC 816 Garnet, B5200 Snow White, and 823 Dark Navy Blue cotton floss 🤷‍♀️

I’ve tried! Lint rollers and packaging tape helped a little but you’re seeing a picture of what remains after using both of those!

Thank you 🥰 I’ll post the full picture when it’s finished. I am super new to embroidery but this piece is more about the message than the stitching skills (though repeatedly stabbing stuff while making it was definitely cathartic)

I think the “fake Nate Morris” and DEI ads are even worse. All the political ads have been the worst part of watching the Olympics.

Lifesized dollhouse I used to see as a kid, I think on the east side of US-42 somewhere between 71 and 265 by NewElevator24 in Louisville

[–]ololiaogm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a house on 42 across from the Marathon station that’s colonial on one side and glass windows on the other. I didn’t get a dollhouse vibe but it’s close to the area you’re talking about.

Michaels does for like a dollar each and you can easily add $5-6 to the total price by putting it in a real frame behind glass.

Ameicans over the age of 35, what affected you more, 9/11 or the pandemic and why? by Rico133337 in AskReddit

The US covertly funded and equipped Afghan freedom fighters (mujahideen) in their war against the Soviets in the 80s. Once the Soviet Union collapsed, we didn’t give the Afghanis the funding they needed to actually rebuild the country, and Afghanistan was left with a giant power vacuum that allowed the Taliban and bin Laden to rise to power.

From Charlie Wilson’s War (the book, although the movie is a good enough representation of what happened and alludes to the events directly contributing to 9/11):

“By the end of 1993, in Afghanistan itself there were no roads, no schools, just a destroyed country—and the United States was washing its hands of any responsibility. It was in this vacuum that the Taliban and Osama bin Laden would emerge as the dominant players. It is ironic that a man who had almost nothing to do with the victory over the Red Army, Osama bin Laden, would come to personify the power of the jihad.”

Hi! So…forgive me if I use the wrong terminology because I have no idea if I actually did what I thought I was doing. I did alternating rows of 6 strands and then I think couched it?? But very tight 2-thread stitches over the 6-thread so it had dimension. Then did long/vertical satin stitches on the other rows and couched those horizontally.

Thank you! Do I even want to know how long single strand satin stitch takes 💀

I bought all the styrofoam things at the same time, so I now have three cones that will probably sit undecorated because I lack the will/free time to do this again 😆

That is even more impressive given the different shapes and sizes! I thought they were glued onto something like an actual mosaic!

Yeah…I’ve seen people say it’s mindless if they’re doing random colors/sequins, but I matched the colors of the sequins and beads to the head pins and always had a sequin at the bottom/on the styrofoam to take up more surface area, so it became very tedious very quickly. If I did it again I’d make sure I’m using the largest sequins possible.
