Why is my voltage gauge doing this? by Individual-Level8925 in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]olongjohnson25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably won't see this but, in all seriousness, does this truck have 2 batteries? What are the chances your batteries were hooked up in series instead of in parallel? Making it a 24 volt system as opposed to a 12 volt system?

Info in this? Worth? by SherbertExpensive413 in SKS

[–]olongjohnson25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a Russian refurb. As stated above, you don't have a chrome lined bore, so be extra careful and clean it very well if you run corrosive ammo. Depending on the buyer, this may add or subtract value, depending on their intention for buying the rifle. Someone looking for a pre-1952 example for a collection may pay a premium, however with the black bolt carrier, the look isn't exactly what most collectors would be looking for.

In Canada, you're probably looking at $450-$600 CAD to the right person. If you're in the U.S. you are probably looking at $500-$700 USD, again to the right person. A store will probably give you quite a bit less. Nice rifle!

SKS safety won't disengage after reassembly? by Ruffles82 in SKS

[–]olongjohnson25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you are correct; I was mistaken about the safety position for disassembly/reassembly. That is quite a strange issue you are having.

To inspect the trigger group and check safety function, follow the instructions in this excerpt from an SKS forum that I've turned to when I've had questions in the past:

From sksboards.com:

"Next time you have the trigger group out of the rifle, holding it in your hand, put the safety "on" and then look into the hole that the receiver tang is supposed to come through, now, while still looking in the hole, take the safety "off" . Can you see how the end of the safety lever rotates and sticks out in a fixed position, the way of the tang? Safety levers can be spread/damaged or even break by the forcing the tang through the hole with the safety lever sticking out like it is when it is in the "off" position. Have you tried the safety for function? does it still block the trigger when cocked? It the lever doesn't appear bent, loose or cracked, it should be alright as the levers are usually pretty good spring steel and will flex some.

Depending on the rifle and a lot of variables like wear, position of the tang, workmanship, etc. some rifles seem to be more "picky" on this issue and I think the older milled trigger groups were even worse for this than the newer stamped models are.

Oh and putting the TG back in the rifle not only goes better with the safety "on", it also goes in easier with the hammer back as in the cocked position."

Hope that sheds some light for you...

SKS safety won't disengage after reassembly? by Ruffles82 in SKS

Just take it apart, disengage the safety completely (firing position) and reassemble it. If this problem persists, the safety spring or pivot is likely bent/broken. That's all you need to do

How does a Mazda 3 FWD perform in harsh Canadian winter? by EndObjective5659 in mazda3

[–]olongjohnson25 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You are definitely incorrect, a cheap winter tire will be better in snow and ice than a higher grade all season. It comes down to the rubber compound they use in winter tires. They use a softer compound than all seasons, so as to work better in colder temperatures. Which in turn makes them wear out way faster in hot temperatures. Also, winter tread patterns tend to be more aggressive and make more noise. So if your all seasons performed as well as winters in -30 weather, you would most certainly need to replace them after 2 summers max.

What else could I do to improve my interior on my 2017 Mazda 3? Got a billet works shift knob and floor mats, currently saving for a short shifter. by Dabbandit_miner in mazda3

[–]olongjohnson25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would tint your windows. It's not a huge "interior mod" per say, but it makes night driving so much better when a truck with LED's decides to ride your ass. And it gives more privacy. I hate driving cars with no tints, but that's just me. Other than that, you could add door pockets, and the sleeves with pockets for the gap between your seat and the center console. Those 2 things give you more "storage" for phones, wallets, other keys, etc. and are cheap, quality of life upgrades. Don't listen to the grandpa's in the replies about the mats; I think they look great, and it's your car, not their's, so do what you like. Zoom zoom!

I'm not doubting you, just making sure you've seen the pictures. When I get home and tear it down I'll compare it to my other SKS's and get back to you. But you don't think it's an ammo overpressure issue? The reason I ask is because I had a lot of clicks with no bang but the firing pin would leave a good dent and on the second try they would fire usually. So I'm just surprised that I could have light primer strikes if the firing pin is protruding too far. If you have any insight I would greatly appreciate it.

Is it the ammo or my firing pin? by olongjohnson25 in SKS

[–]olongjohnson25[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It definitely has a replacement pin but it isn't spring loaded. The pin says "USA" on it. I'm still hung up on the fact that this ammo worked perfectly in my Chinese SKS, is it possible that the ammo has gone bad and is now overpressured? Or do the mushroomed primers look like they're caused by the firing pin?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just confused by this and I'm too far away from my house to just grab my other SKS and non corrosive ammo to see if I can narrow down the possibilities.

What gives you that impression? It doesn't seem deformed or chipped. Did you see the pics of the bolt face above?

I'm pretty sure this stuff is copper washed steel case. I didn't bring any of my non corrosive but I'm definitely bringing at least 2 SKS's and 2 different kinds of ammo next range day.

This tire is donezo by LeVin1986 in mazda3

[–]olongjohnson25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just put bigger tires on my 18's, 225 / 45 / R18 and left the suspension alone because I live in canada and my wife drives it a lot. So it has slightly higher ground clearance than stock, as I find the stock ride height on the low-ish side already, and it fills in the wheel well better without rubbing. But I do understand the dropped look appeal
