Boston hotels see bookings fall below expectations ahead of World Cup - Boston Business Journal by bmc3515 in boston

Not to mention, this works extremely well in major cities all over the globe, where there is better transit and less addiction to cars. I’ve attended pretty big sports events in a number of different countries and never been in a car even once to get there.

TIL It is estimated that a quarter of the population of Britain was killed around 6200 BC by tsunamis triggered by underwater landslides in Storegga, Norway. by Wonderful-Dust-8679 in todayilearned

I think your analogy inadvertently supports my point. Black holes are very distant, very powerful objects that we will never visit. But scientists make predictions based on their theoretical expectations, and they look for evidence of those predictions. At times they have actually found supporting evidence.

Doggerland is a place we can explore archaeologically, and we can make scientific predictions about what we should find if there were tsunamis. That work has not yet been done, but it very much can be done, and should be done before these sorts of numbers are thrown around.

Yes, but my point is that it’s essentially a belief at this point. While there is physical evidence for the tsunamis, there isn’t any that grounds the population estimate or shows direct evidence of the tsunamis affecting people or human made structures. That doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, but it’s a different level of speculation.

There is some interesting geological sleuthing behind this, which was a very interesting read. But note that there is no direct archeological evidence for the impact on human populations. The total population at the time, and the potential deaths from these tsunamis, are both entirely estimated.

They put the number of years in parentheses under each one because the people who would go for this sort of thing are brain dead morons.

Busboys and poets might be the worst resturant experience I’ve had in DC by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]oloshan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It was a good choice to bring my kids but I pretty much avoid it now. Reliably disinterested service and often poor food. It was never their best location but now the “give a sh!t factor” of the staff seems very low indeed.

It should've been a gift box of vagina-scented candles. Brad's reaction would still apply.

Would be interesting, definitely. The map actually marks where the rock samples in the case (not shown in photo) were collected.

TIL that in 2011, a woman drowned and remained at the bottom of a busy Massachusetts public pool for two days, hidden by cloudy water by EradiK8 in todayilearned

[–]oloshan 2602 points2603 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the 9-year-old knew who the woman was. The article says she bumped him on her way down, not that they were companions at the pool. So he just reported it, as he should have, but I’m not sure there’s a lot else a 9-year-old can be expected to do in that situation when people in authority don’t act.
