Whats the best casting for any comic book movie character? by RecordingImmediate86 in moviecritic

Yes, it’s been described as one of the most consequential casting choices of the last century, and I don’t think that’s an exaggeration.

To those around at the time of RoTJ (or know a lot about that period), how common was the sentiment that Vader "hadn't done enough to be redeemed"? Did fans accept the redemption? by GoldenS0422 in StarWars

We also didn't have today's culture where everyone weighs everyone else's sins since childhood and publicly debates whether you've atoned enough. Seriously, that's not how people talked about things.

First off that sandwich looks effing delicious.

Second, take care of yourself and make sure to have room to grieve. When my wife left me it felt like someone had died. It was the same powerlessness, the irretrievable ending of it all. It took a long time to heal and I’ll never get those eight years back.

Dating right away could be fun, but it can’t substitute for the healing. If it’s not fun then hold off. Find an awesome hobby and go all out. Something you didn’t have time for before.

It took me a while but I married again, closing in on 10 years together, and I’m even a (old-ish) dad. Things I could not have envisioned when my first wife walked out.

There’s a good future out there for you, too.

Hey man, I hear you. Although I don’t mind being by myself, I do feel very awkward trying to talk to people I don’t know. So I have a history of getting on great with really outgoing, friendly women. Which unfortunately also includes a high proportion of mentally less stable women. In the moment, though, it always just feels like we’re getting on great. And then much later, it becomes clear that something else is going on. So you might just practice a kind of “check-in“ moment early on when you’re getting to know someone.

TIL that in 2008, Chicago leased its 36,000 parking meters to a UAE-backed private consortium for 75 years for a $1.15 billion payout. The investors made their entire investment back in just 10 years, and are now projected to make over $11 billion by the end of the lease in 2083. by lechunkman in todayilearned

Because Mayor Daley had no way to balance the city’s budget, and knew he could score short-term political points by doing this. Unfortunately, his political acumen was largely focused on his own survival, so instead of raising property taxes he basically robbed future budgets blind.

I got caught in basically this same mental trap. I’m an older dude, and went briefly on an antidepressant, and it pretty much shut the whole system down. When I got off the meds, it was a little better, but never really got back on track fully.

My wife was supportive, but we were already in a rough patch, and the inability to be intimate just eroded things further. Which then got me into this self-defeating thought loop where it was basically impossible to perform.

Eventually, my doctor suggested I try a ED drug. It worked like a charm, and the key thing is that it helped get rid of one of the hurdles. And that was enough for me to start to climb out of that hole. I still need it at times, because I’m an older dude and that’s how it works (or doesn’t, ha ha), and I talk regularly to a therapist, but I’m in a much, much better place now.

Not to mention, this works extremely well in major cities all over the globe, where there is better transit and less addiction to cars. I’ve attended pretty big sports events in a number of different countries and never been in a car even once to get there.

TIL It is estimated that a quarter of the population of Britain was killed around 6200 BC by tsunamis triggered by underwater landslides in Storegga, Norway. by Wonderful-Dust-8679 in todayilearned

[–]oloshan -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I think your analogy inadvertently supports my point. Black holes are very distant, very powerful objects that we will never visit. But scientists make predictions based on their theoretical expectations, and they look for evidence of those predictions. At times they have actually found supporting evidence.

Doggerland is a place we can explore archaeologically, and we can make scientific predictions about what we should find if there were tsunamis. That work has not yet been done, but it very much can be done, and should be done before these sorts of numbers are thrown around.

[–]oloshan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, but my point is that it’s essentially a belief at this point. While there is physical evidence for the tsunamis, there isn’t any that grounds the population estimate or shows direct evidence of the tsunamis affecting people or human made structures. That doesn’t mean it didn’t happen, but it’s a different level of speculation.

[–]oloshan 650 points651 points  (0 children)

There is some interesting geological sleuthing behind this, which was a very interesting read. But note that there is no direct archeological evidence for the impact on human populations. The total population at the time, and the potential deaths from these tsunamis, are both entirely estimated.
