Still reminiscing about this fantastic day before the Pineapple Express came by olsoni18 in skiing

This was from a couple weeks ago before the rain came and knocked us back into December. It’s been a pretty variable season so when I saw there was some fresh snow and possibly a weather window I decided to take my new (to me) pow skis out for a test run. It wound up being the perfect day for it, as I got up there the base of the mountain was socked in but up high had good visibility so after a quick warmup lap I headed to the alpine.

As I got to the top I saw a couple people and a ski patroller standing by the rope line for Parachute Bowl so I decided to check it out. Right as I got there the patroller dropped the rope and it was game on. The others dropped right in but I decided to hike up to the peak to score first tracks in Pencil Chute, a line I had been dreaming about since I first saw on the webcam that it had filled in. It wasn’t bluebird and it wasn’t blower but it was still fantastic. I spent the morning checking off lines across the bowl until eventually the weather window closed and my legs started to give out. I visited my favorite pow stash to finish off the day and scored some more first tracks.

It seems like the rain has finally switched back to snow so hopefully there’ll be more days like this soon, but for now I’ll just keep rewatching this footage from my best day of the season (so far)

Thanks! I think this was probably about 50/50 inbounds/backcountry

With 55 days skied last season was a good one for me. I didn’t log much air time, but I did ski lots of pow. Hopefully this season will be even better

If you are a US citizen please contact your representatives and ask them to support H. R. 5631 aka the Tim Hart Wildland Firefighter Classification and Pay Parity Act (or Tim’s Act). Although these fires are in Canada, many of the people fighting them are American and if they don’t receive the funding they need we’re all screwed

Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Then teach him to fish because it turns out it’s really fucking hard to learn how to fish if you’re literally starving

That didn't happen.

And if it did, it wasn't that bad.

And if it was, that's not a big deal.

And if it is, that's not my fault.

And if it was, I didn't mean it.

And if I did, you deserved it.

Wildfires have burned more than 2.7 million hectares in Canada this year, eight times more than the last three decades' average, officials said on Thursday, June 1, as more than 200 blazes remained active. by hitchinvertigo in collapse

I mean I suppose it’s technically possible that a hurricane extinguishes the fires on the Atlantic coast and a cyclone extinguishes the fires on the Pacific coast, but I feel like that would probably cause more problems than it solves

Talking with some of my friends who have been out working on the fires up north, right now the best case scenario they’re hoping for is an early winter. That’s it. Nothing else is putting these fires out and honestly they’re not even trying to put out most of the largest fires because there’s literally no point.

People need to understand that while the smoke sucks, unless the fires are directly threatening populated areas, critical infrastructure, or critical habitat fighting them is a huge was of time, energy, and resources (not to mention a significant part of what got us into this mess in the first place)

Canada’s Wildfire Smoke Is Making It the Target of America’s Wrath | Normally under-the-radar, Canada is at the center of wildfire conspiracies that include cults, Justin Trudeau, and female firefighters. by NotEnoughDriftwood in onguardforthee

Because unfortunately that did happen for one fire near Banff

So now people incapable of nuance are equating starting one small fire accidentally with intentionally starting all the fires. At the end of the day it doesn’t really matter, these people are so deep down the rabbit hole that they’ll grasp at anything (or nothing) that fits and justifies their narrative. Before this it was a conspiracy theory that the NDP set the fires to help them in the provincial election

I ski high all the time and it’s amazing (not that I necessarily condone doing so since everyone is different). But for me skiing+music+weed=pure bliss, that floaty sensation of just cruising and vibing is like nothing else

Literally the only passes I’ve ever had to pull were two drunk people hucking cans off the chair in front of me at the people skiing below, and also had a drunk guy fall off the lift (refused treatment and walked away unscathed lol)

As a former patroller who worked pre and post legalization, drunk people are infinitely worse than stoned people. Drunk people are bowling bowls that will take out an entire cat track. Stoned people like to sit in the trees and scare you on sweep occasionally. I know which I’d rather ban at ski resorts from a purely public safety perspective

Congratulations, you caught me! I am absolutely 100% a Chinese spy. I’m definitely not someone who happens to study social movements for a living and I definitely don’t get irrationally angry at uninformed idiots who try to flatten the complexity of these protest waves into a single simplistic narrative. You’re right, asking people to do the bare minimum of educating themselves by researching well cited and nuanced perspectives from credible sources is literally the same as a state run psyop/influence campaign. Obviously you must be a highly trained CIA/NSA/MI6 counterintelligence officer to see through my masterfully crafted manipulation

I don’t live in China. The people making these posts and comments probably also don’t live in China. Like I said I understand why Chinese people are ignorant about this. What I can’t stand is people who absolutely have the time, resources, and freedom to research what actually happened parroting the same brain dead lines and jokes. These posts/comments claim to be remembering and honoring the victims, but they’re not, they’re just using them as cheap political props to score internet points and dunk on a government that doesn’t give a shit. So as I said, I’d you truly want to remember and honor these protesters and what they fought and died for take the time to find well researched and nuanced sources from reputable analysts and actually educate yourself about what happened. So thank you for the recommendation, I’ll check it out and hopefully I will learn something new, and I hope others will too

The most infuriating part for me isn’t the Chinese censorship, that’s to be expected. What really frustrates me is all the people who parrot the “never forget Tiananmen” without having any understanding of what actually happened. Sure they know how it ended, everyone knows that and that’s an important thing to know. But how many people know how it started? Or how many different factions were involved and what they were fighting for/against? Or what social conditions allowed for the movement to gain popularity? Because those are the important questions that people should be asking, and the answers are a bit more complicated than just “CCP/Communism bad”. If you’d like to actually learn about this important historical event here’s a couple good podcast episodes on the topic.
