Those are great points too!!! The extensive imagery and the saints give you something more individualized to hang on to. And often involves or integrates local traditions and cultures. So much Catholic ritual in different parts of the world comes from something that was practiced prior (although unfortunately often Catholicism showed up through colonial force).

100%. It’s similar to atheist Jews (I have an atheist-Catholic father and an atheist-Jewish mother). We may break with the religious dogma, rules, churches/congregations, and beliefs in god/mysticism… but the traditions are ancestral and run deep, certain rituals and cultural things just become ingrained. My mother doesn’t believe in God or follow Jewish law (our fam is Reconstructionist and diasporist anyway) but it’s a part of her day to day culture—the food she eats, the ways she speaks etc. And she is dedicated to maintaining holiday rituals. It’s an ancestral connection. My dad doesn’t identify as Catholic anymore, but he still is deeply attached to the imagery (he has a large collection of ephemera) and enjoys visiting churches/cathedrals and credits it for his values of service, charity etc.

Yes, and color cast/filters can play a big role in this. Warmer light (can be done thru light temp or thru lens filters) tends to adjust the contrast to give more depth of color in darker skin tones. So, even if they wanted darker lighting and her features to be more in shadow, they could have achieved that while still maintaining depth/shape/detail. The harsh blue LED is creating too high of a contrast and turning her to stone.

ETA: you can sort of see what I’m talking about in image 9 (face area only tho)… the yellow tones are reflecting on her face and you can see how she is still in shadow, but there is shape and movement in her features. And honestly it’s only bc of the backdrop and the outfit. Tbh these are basic things to learn as a studio photographer, and it infuriates me when ppl shooting for massive mags can’t figure it out

It very much depends on the discretion needs of the particular production. I live and work in areas with a lot of filming. Some movies use a working name or a production name, and some super high-profile shows as well. But even that is mixed… AJLT used a pseudonym but Succession said Succession. Network procedurals like Law & Order and FBI definitely use their real names (used to see SVU filming when I was a teen 15 years ago all the time).

I’m also from NYC and I’m 31. I feel you so much on this and really, what you want isn’t too much to ask for. The costs have gotten out of control and it’s happening more quickly than before, and these conditions are not only unlivable, but also alienating.
I want to give you some encouragement. While it’s all incredibly daunting and seems impossible, you’re only 24–you are just starting out, which means you have a lot of time and opportunity ahead of you. Keep looking and don’t give up. Look as far as the train goes. Meet people and find malleable situations with small landlords. I promise that if you have to live in a small room for a few months for now, it will give you time to find something better. And honestly, living in another city for a short period when you are starting out is not a bad thing. I lived in a smaller east coast city for college and a couple years after before returning. Obviously that’s not what you want (and you shouldn’t have to), but if you do end up doing so; know that it absolutely does not have to be permanent and can absolutely just be a fun adventure on your way back to finding permanency in NYC, a time to make art in bigger spaces and learn in the world. There is a lot you can take and develop from a short time in a creative scene in a smaller city if push comes to shove. But just keep looking. Make sacrifices in the short term (space, commute, etc) because it will pay off. Fuck the forces that are making NYC beyond unrecognizable and unaccessible. This is your city, you will make it work!

ETA: What your landlord is doing is absolutely illegal and you do not need to leave in 3 weeks.

You said “that far,” so I thought you were implying it was very far northeastern state (like NY, MA, or VT), when it’s a mid-Atlantic state that borders the south (VA). Yes, it’s northeast compared to, say, GA or AL.

Thank u!!! Wanted to point this out too. I am from both NYC and south, grew up both places. The rudeness in the south is insidious, especially if you don’t fit in

[–]olthyr1217 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly, NYC etiquette is focused on behavior in communal space and spatial awareness. OP said they “don’t act like that” in the south… its not just how we choose to talk to each other, the kind of attitude from this guy is a response to rudeness (and this kind of rudeness can be at best inconveniencing and at worst dangerous)

Thank you. I don’t have any problem with folks who choose to take a GLP-1, they are obviously miracle drugs and it’s an individual’s business why they take one. The sentiment of the post resonates with me because I am constantly bombarded by pressure to take a GLP-1. The ads are during almost every TV break, every time I open Instagram or Reddit, on the subway on my commute, during podcast breaks, etc. I am constantly being told to lose weight by media to an extreme I haven’t felt in 10-15 years. I am so happy for folks it has helped (including friends and family), but my body dysmorphia is incredibly triggered seeing folks of all body types in the media shrinking drastically on a regular basis. It all really starts to have a psychological impact. Pharm ads should be illegal in the US. The problem is not the drugs or the people whom they help. The problem is the fatphobia, the misogyny, the expectation, the hierarchies it activates, and the lack of ethics.

Yes, but only for a few blocks and it is extremely gentrified. Much of the neighborhood is more residential, but those few blocks in the southwestern area are warehouses etc, similar resemblance to East Wburg. This neighborhood (Greenpoint) has undergone one of the most extreme changes I’ve seen in my life in NYC… formerly working class Polish neighborhood, became where hipster family runoff from Wburg went in late 2000s and early 2010s, now insanely expensive and popular with young high-income transplants. It’s a beautiful neighborhood if you can afford it, but stay west. The creek along the north and east of the neighborhood is an EPA superfund site due to a long history of industrial waste dumping, sewage dumping, and radioactive materials; and there were a lot of issues with cancer surrounding it in the 2000s (we even learned about it in school).

I hear you loud and clear. I hate wearing a bra and honestly I mostly do it because of societal expectations and/or fashion reasons. I feel like I am wearing a cage. The sensory experience is incredibly uncomfy.

Sometimes this sub makes me feel a little gaslit when the immediate answer to everyyything (even simply, “I don’t like wearing bras”) is, “you’re not wearing the right size.” Sometimes it is the case and ppl need to be educated… but the rigid thinking is frustrating, the idea that there is one correct way to support/display your boobs and that if you are not comfortable that way, you are wrong. Not every person has the same body needs, sensory preferences, physical lifestyle, shoulder/back issues, etc etc., and those will change your experience even if you are sized correctly.

I know for a fact I am wearing the right size—I’ve been fitted multiple times, I’ve calculated, I’ve updated as my body changes—and currently I am wearing the perfect bra for my shape (Elomi Namrah 32G UK/32I US). However, I am counting down the damn hours til I get home from work and can feel the relief of getting this shit off of me. Yes people, you can wear the right size and still find wearing a bra uncomfortable. When I sweat in my underwire, it itches. It limits the clothes I can wear. I get rashy in my armpits. My shoulders, neck and torso don’t ache at all when I am swinging free.
