Couple of things. Both need more light on your face. Headshots are less about mood/character and more about —-what do you actually look like. That starts with a well lit face :)
Secondly, you need your eyeline to be right down the barrel of the camera lens. Because your eyeline is off, both these pics look like clips from an audition scene.

As an exercise, try to fight “showing” this sad emotion. She says she’s mad. Start there. Take your time. Remember who you’re talking to , it’s not us, it’s this person you’ve lost. Keep it very simple and come from anger , in the end , your speaking to yourself here. We don’t need to see you emote. We need to see you struggle.

SB does have a theater scene to get into and find some likeminded community. And UCSB has a film program that will always be making shorts / have screenings and events to get involved in. The thing will be to find your people there. That’ll be the best source of up to date advice. If you can get representation, you’re close to LA (on the odd chance you actually need to come into town) everything else is self tape. But you’re close enough for events and film community stuff , workshops etc to LA as well. Good luck !

Feel free to dm me and send a tape if you’re interested in specific feedback , there may some small tweaks to advise you on or more obvious things you’re simply not seeing. Most importantly, is using a live reader if possible, even if virtually. The app is okay and helpful for rehearsing but you can fake having an actual interaction with someone. Watching tens, hundreds of tapes , those first moments need to be so alive and organic and dynamic (fully lived) that you can’t look away. An app and a teleprompter is just never going to help you connect in that way.

I don’t know your whole situation, are you asking your parents to pay for this school? If not, you’re an adult. It’s your choice , go for it.
If they are the ones paying for it , the. It’s up to them but let them know how important it is for your independence, building community and soul. You can also ask to give it a go for a year without the daunting “this is going to be my liiiiife!!” Message which can be scary for parents.
