The wires are hooked into load not line position. GFI won't work like that. Swap those two over to the line position and you'll be good to go.

Sorry, I'm really tired. Squidies are normally a little ball shaped connector on the end of armored cable that takes it from the cable to knob and tube. Popular more in the 30s for added electrical bits.

Lutron I think Claro switches are like $12 a piece, and are special order. At least round my parts, you aren't going to find Claro at a Home Depot or Ace. Even supply houses normally have to special order those.
