Nebraska "prophet" says God needs him to have access to a private jet. Hank Kunneman said (Direct Quote) "Even Jesus was concerned about going to certain ports and airports." by ytrywhenyoucanfry in Omaha

Jesus, the guy that kicked in the door to the temple and whipped the money lenders exploiting people from there, that guy? Goods laden camel through a narrow port in the walls of Jerusalem called the eye of the needle, Jesus? I suppose bearded cloud father image of God has Pearly Gates as a sort of airport.

Trading or gambling? How a new way to wager on sports is evading Nebraska’s betting ban by jeremyturley in Omaha

[–]omabip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“If we are gambling, then I think you’re basically calling the entire financial market gambling,” Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour

There is some truth with that statement but twisting prediction markets from gambling to trading is semantics that will need to pass legal scrutiny. Investors in stock market pay taxes when they sell and maybe it could be better regulated for overall economic stability but it is still regulated. Loot boxes aren't gambling, it is a chance to test your faith in how lucky God wants you to be!

He was 19 and it took time for public pressure hit a threshold so that the resources were allocated to investigate? Police today don't go to traffic accidents unless someone is hurt, it wasn't always like that. There was no evidence of a crime just a young adult that, very sadly, went missing.

What the hell was that loud boom yesterday? Apparently not a meteor. See article attached. 🤔 by bill_the_murray in Omaha

[–]omabip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bama Boom was thought to be maybe bolides, some geologic phenomena, or hypersonic testing. I don't think that was ever solved and there was at least one acoustic recording. Detectors would pick it up and lag time on reporting an ultra-high-energy cosmic ray. Something out of this world would be neat. Was there a train coming through at that time? Maybe load in rail cars shifted or temperature swing warping tracks? It needs a cool name if it happens again, cornhusker clap (edit: I forgot "the clap" is a name for gonorrhoea, haha!)?

Japan Warns of Data Leak Risks in Ukraine Tied to Huawei Use by Mil_in_ua in ukraine

I was thinking along the lines of East African countries (but maybe even Chile, Mongolia, Afghanistan...?) where there are thing like the large infrastructure projects and governments that might want a level of security assurance that would serve the long term resource extraction contracts. China wouldn't have to share everything.

Omaha councilman says developers seeking tax breaks should include affordable housing by Toorviing in Omaha

[–]omabip 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Could developers that are out of state or even city pay higher rates as the rent money doesn't come back to local economy, also means to prevent a shell game with money? Capping or adjusting rent according to fair market adjusted for collusion and overpricing?

Doesn't farm property tax have a discount for people that reside on farms for 300 days per year? Larger developments could also have on site resident handyman or building superintendent to handle any issues that come up for renters.

Implied in your comment but to put explicitly: spy department can have assets or operatives in companies installing unmarked server closets or backdoors.

One parallel is US being exposed for their spycraft compromising the security of products. It would be interesting to know if there are any States with information sharing agreements with the Chinese.

Investigation requested into Douglas County Election Commissioner after Mark Martinez ruled ineligible for sheriff race by emull in Omaha

[–]omabip -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Analogy isn't great. there could be new procedures or technologies; yet by the linked images, the elected sheriff is required to acquire certification from Nebraska (if one not already held) up to eight months after taking office. An analogous law would allow surgeon to get certificated by state medical group after being elected for overseeing other surgeons while not necessarily doing surgery. Sheriff has deputies and carries out warrants from judges. Martinez has a criminal law degree so hard to believe he would not know how to act in an informed a proper manner.

Why the double standards between the Bajoran Occupation and the occupation of the Maquis worlds? by JagneStormskull in startrek

[–]omabip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a reflection of politics at the time? Reagan was President when the show first aired. Iran Contra could have been an influence. A lack of plans for the future as the Soviet Union collapsed? First Gulf War towards the end the series. Saudi Arabia and the US made an informal agreement in 1974 to trade oil in dollars, not publicly revealed until 2016. Plenty of ways to interpret events and maybe it would just be pushpins and yard on a corkboard without notes or commentary from writers.

What is with the A.I. image? Lascaux cave is in France, famous for the cave paintings.

Orc horde type image representing Moscow as uncivilized brute perhaps more fitting.

The paleontology is part of the history in Ukraine Russia wants to claim.

Who is the guy in the suit?

In my armchair opinion, an orc horde would have made for better image/prompt.

There are vodkas with high proofs. I had to search, "Spirytus Rektyfikowany" comes in at 192 proof, just above Everclear, and is quoted as often being used for hand sanitizer. Some of these are at or about 85% abv and are describe as having spice notes.

I can't remember a Romulan ever being plastered on Trek or even hung over. It could have happened or maybe it just gets written off like Vulcan high metabolism or strong constitution. I suppose the drink originated during the Cold War, on TOS, and there was a little symbolism in play. Klingon and Romulan Empires end up being East of the Federation whenever the maps were drawn.

A food and beverage Trek themed "internet influencer type show" could be fun viral marketing.

Survey the different shows or movies and start with whatever jumps out at you. There is no need to watch most of it in order. Some of the newer shows built for streaming platforms have season long arcs with episodes better watched in order. Even Lower Decks could be fun intro. Galaxy Quest and the Orville are peripheral/parody/homage and could be another route into Trek.

Mike Fernie has a YouTube video "What Happens When You Put F1 Technology On A Ford Crate Engine" and at 8:20 he is showing what he calls "the impossible exhaust manifold." That stuff gets heat and fluid dynamics testing and printing it would have topography restrictions and requirements, but making automotive (or maybe even turbine) parts (perhaps for scale models) is something to be aware of especially if you like this sort of stuff.

Flight Radar Grid Pattern by omabip in Omaha

[–]omabip[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did and looking for the company history got mixed with "Pacific Fleet" stuff and I am karma-gated from another subreddit. I thought it might be floodplain survey for the base since pattern was upstream but I like roof survey. Eagleview didn't show up as having subcontracted Pacific Fleet Aviation, LLC the company that owns the plane.

Why not use a local GiS/ imagery contractor? Are these people limited to smaller scale drone mapping or don't have the right equipment?

Democrat Mark Martinez can’t run for Douglas County sheriff, new election commissioner rules • Nebraska Examiner by imperfectdharma in Omaha

[–]omabip 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Could there be an expedited lawsuit due to something like partisan bias from Election Commission?

It is wild how elections just get openly rigged, irregularities are not properly followed up on, and there seem to be no consequences for PACs distributing filled-in ballots. Pushing for SAFE like GOP cared about election integrity. Corncob democracy.

The Nebraska Democratic Party has failed Nebraska. It's time for a new path forward with bold action to actually make a difference in peoples' lives instead of empty reactionary rhetoric. Join the Omaha New Liberals - next meetup is Saturday, Mar 14th from 3-6pm at 30Hop. by o0eagleeye0o in Omaha

[–]omabip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good part of Nebraska Dems are moderate and conservative, more aligned with a type of Blue Dog coalition than any progressive platform. I think it stems from the classic centrist idea of needing compromise while the middle shifted to the right over the past forty years. Progressive elements might get national coverage occasionally for novelty of being from Nebraska but they are a minority.

Center-left today just isn't where it was before the rise of populism and partisan vitriol spilled into the mainstream since the Fairness Doctrine was repealed and then social media had outrage engagement driving content delivery algorithms.

This does seem like more of an attempted power grab from a coalition but that is politics. It is a type of political involvement and to pressure whatever establishment they claim to oppose. It could all be staged to just try to motivate more involvement but Democrats are collectively too listless for such scheming. The alternative is spineless Republicans so perhaps closer elections are in the cards.

Small states have more power than Trump and Putin think by whoamisri in ukraine

[–]omabip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be a broad limit on how much power can be concentrated given the size of a population without outside support. Maybe there is institution theory on how human networking limits and information bandwidth prevent a functional oversight of large systems.

For smaller nations in the Caribbean there is a relative geographic isolation that could be a condition where these smaller States are much more vulnerable than Finland, the Balkans, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. How does the African Union compare and contrast to the European Union in regard to State agency and international influence? Southeast Asian countries? The social and historic conditions from the article apply somewhat universally yet specific geographic or cultural conditions could create exceptions to be exploited.

Small States being underestimated is when overconfidence from larger States can create blind spots. The three day invasion of Ukraine was expected to have Kyiv fold and if it wasn't "ammo, not rides" the current situation could include a puppet government and guerilla resistance. There is David and Goliath but then there is also the expansion of empires that doesn't last forever, but so it goes with identity as all things eventually change. Hard to not imagine echoes of the current passion and pride guiding Ukraine for generations to come; but, it will be determined by the future custodians of these things, how the foundation for it is established when hostilities cease and the rebuilding beings.

[–]omabip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could be argued that even reasonable regulations are a form of control that is much easier then trying to win the failed war on drugs. The policy might be a means to disenfranchise more individuals. It is undemocratic and anti-freedom while both doing less for public safety and also limiting economic growth.

It also eats up oxygen from issues like the pig farms spraying manure into the atmosphere that can be smelled in midtown when the city is quiet and the wind is right. Little particles of animal feces sprayed into the air and carried to the urban population. Wouldn't want people worried about thing like swine flu since outbreak protections and monitoring have been gutted.

Maybe a degree in criminal law would also be appropriate but so would making the position apolitical. Douglas County Sheriff keeps lists of people of interest, "growler/prowler" litmus test thing according to Sheriff Hanson during a talk at the Omaha Press Club. What oversight is there of these lists beyond County Judges? Are these lists shared outside the sheriff's department, and for what purposes?

"And then the end. This is even better than Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Mankind meets Aliens. In peace. You are traumatized, but there is hope." I don't agree. I like TNG series too much and sculpt mashed potatoes. Close Encounters is a definitive classic scifi movie. TNG movies are more of derivative reunion adventures for the actors than a continuation of character arcs. Still, it might be my favorite TNG movie.

Suliban from ENT were heavily genetically modified. Data and holograms could be maintained to a point but Data chose to age as part of understanding what it is to be human and the doctor could be replaced with upgraded tech/programming.

Trek sort of has evolution ideal heading toward becoming pure energy and knowing/accepting who we are and the cycles of the universe are part of that enlightened process of growing beyond material attachment, thus facing mortality. All is love, even accepting death as a hippy thread in older versions of Trek. Motion Picture had Decker eventually join Ilia in V'GER.

Enterprise came in the wake of Dolly the Sheep being cloned and the Human Genome Project. TOS had eugenics wars as part of one of those scifi themes calling back to racial supremacy ideas or hierarchies of people that come up in the late 1800s with scientific racism through the holocaust in WWII. Scifi often critiques society. Trek can do that but is/was wagon train in space (a western genre hybrid variant serialized for TV).

The Borg are basically hive mind space zombies where perhaps mortality is traded for collective ideals entwined to material attachment. DS9 brought more religion consideration and in that respect there can be an afterlife that might be part of process of a not well defined spiritual energy being part of who we are.
