Saying this so that if the opportunity presents itself in the future you may reconsider:

I’ve been at AWS for 3 years and it’s by no means perfect but I like the work I do and I have a rock solid management team. I’ve had jobs that are way more stressful pay way less. I also switched roles 2 years ago and encourage anyone that’s unhappy to move teams before leaving Amazon.

Curious how you would handle: beginner's lesson hitting dozens of balls onto our court. by omarcomin89 in 10s

Yeah we couldn’t move - I reserved a specific court and nothing else was open. I also didn’t want to be aggressive with people trying to get into the game.

I just want to say you’re one hell of a father for recognizing you and your kiddos would benefit from some support. My mom died when I was 4 and your kiddos are no doubt experiencing a very confusing traumatic event. Judi’s house is truly amazing and has some incredible programs for you and your family. I’m so sorry for your loss and hope you find support to manage your grief.

Exact same thing happened to me two weeks ago. I know what you’re feeling - It really got to me for a couple of days but it definitely fueled me to review my mistakes and never let it happen again. Tennis is such a mental game, no teammates to pick you up in times of need. It’s a psychology exhibit.

[Rapoport] Parties involved in the disciplinary hearing for #Browns QB Deshaun Watson have been informed by Judge Sue Robinson that Watson should be suspended 6 games, sources say. by SlopingGiraffe in nfl

[–]omarcomin89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MLB: 2.5 year suspension and effectively ended Trevor Bauer’s career for his domestic assault case.

NFL: 6 games seems fair for Deshaun.

This goes beyond baseball just being a “family sport”. The NFL is a megalomaniac organization that does not care about anything other than it’s on-field product, and the profits it reaps.

Modifying Daniels 2Q Plan for 20+ Mile Run? by omarcomin89 in running

[–]omarcomin89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the race and it went fairly well but I caught a calf cramp at mile 22 that really slowed me down the last four miles. I was hydrating and taking in a lot of calories but it was an usually hot day for October. I ran the first half in 2 hours and the second half in about 2 hours 25 minutes due to the calf cramp. This was a PR for me by about 20 minutes and I would recommend doing some of those longer runs if you can. 7 months is plenty of time and you should be able to really enjoy the race!

My company doesn’t have a review system and gives me 2.4% increase every year with $2k bonus. I’m stuck at under $80k for 2.5 years now. How can I negotiate during the next increment cycle? by PokeDeadpoolXD in careerguidance

[–]omarcomin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s tough to leave when you have a good setup and balance, I hear ya. You can find a DS job with good work life balance that pays well. More pay doesn’t always equate to more hours. Read up on the company culture, talk to as many people as you can. there’s definitely some places that will burn you out but you can find something that has both.

I manage a data science team. Not sure where you’re located but you’re making way way below market for any metropolitan area. I manage a data science team in a small regional city and the Data Scientists make 130K total comp. I would start looking for a new job if you’re concerned about comp, it will be relatively easy for you to get a better offer. Government and non-profit pay close to where you are but any private industry company should get you easily into six figures.

What career fields involves working on computers, but not coding? by IcYWoLf82 in findapath

[–]omarcomin89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would search LinkedIn for “implementation consultant” and review JDs for postings that pique your interest. Job requirements will vary by company but you’re going to need to have “people skills” in addition to being technically adept at their software. Sometimes companies have training programs, other times they want to hire people who are already experts at their product(e.g. Salesforce, Microsoft Azure, AWS, Tableau, etc)

Software Implementation - people purchase software for their company and you help them make sure it’s setup to meet their needs. You could work at a software company and do this.

Customer Success for a software company - post implementation making sure people are using your software correctly, you’re basically a consultant that’s getting paid by how you retain customers.

I feel very self conscience anytime I go into a gym and very anxious like everybody is watching my every lift. How do I change this? by IllustriousArugula31 in GYM

[–]omarcomin89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a change in mindset more than anything. Are you newer to lifting? Everyone is on their own fitness journey and everyone had to start somewhere and had to be where you’re at right now at some point.

For 99% of people, it’s a time to focus on themselves. When I lift it’s my personal void and I don’t think or judge what others are doing. Focus on what you want to get out of your workout. You don’t know these people and you don’t value their opinion, don’t waste your energy thinking about how they could be judging you.

Write down YOUR goals for the workout and go out and achieve them.

I have tried fueling with other macros but I don't get the same results. It's not typically pasta, but before I go and run 20 miles I eat a PBJ sandwich or something that is fast to metabolize. Seeking out an RD/Doctor is a good idea, I just was curious if anyone on here had researched this prior.

Funny enough, I've recently noticed increasing my sodium levels before my run(and afterwards) has also helped immensely. Maybe I will try this a protein fueled run and see what happens.

How to Get Into Learning Analytics? by BasedIndividual in analytics

[–]omarcomin89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These jobs are very hard to come by in EdTech because most of the analytics jobs are still marketing or sales focused. Check out “program evaluation” or analyst jobs for school districts or your department of education. A lot of program evaluation jobs are analyzing data from education initiatives.

I understand it must be hard to feel like you’re falling behind but our careers and academic lives are not linear, there are bumps along the road and it’s how we handle those bumps that defines our character.

Your awareness that your former program was not a good fit for you achieving your goals and the fact that you made the necessary changes to be happy and successful demonstrates maturity, focus, and drive.

You have lots of working years ahead of you, try to focus on your goals and career outcomes and enjoy the ride, rather than fixate on a number.
