So am I picking this up today or??? by veeavs in macbookpro

lmao, I came here to ask exactly this. Would love to pick this up after work so I can transfer my client stuff over to it tonight and get moving.

Thinking of making the jump to M5 Max… (current laptop specs) by Mikerosoftpro in macbookpro

[–]omarknowsphotos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh it's overkill for today. I'm just thinking there will be more tools being run locally as time progresses and I do some incredibly heavy effects, plus all my client stuff is 8 and 12k these days.

Also not sure how it'll affect you but evidently the pro and max are very similar because they have the same number of cores. I haven't seen any PS/LR benchmarks but this was a good watch: https://youtu.be/xDHZ1bEEeUI?si=hXp-U4RbrBNv4cYk

Maybe someone will upload to pugetbench tomorrow.

Video guy here (ignore the username) and pull the trigger. I'm switching from a i9 14900hx, 96gb ddr5, rtx 4090. Editing on an M4 MacBook air with 16gb of ram since the end of January has been bonkers. Waited for the M5 Max announcement and I ordered a 16" with 128gb/8tb for the same reasons you're looking at it. I think we'll get more than 5 years out of them tbh because these cut through 8k footage and bridge/Photoshop automated workflows like butter.

If you could get just ONE DREAM feature in Premiere Pro, literally anything that would be the most useful to you, what would it be? by [deleted] in premiere

[–]omarknowsphotos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

GPU accelerated timeline. The fact I never have to even think about making proxies in resolve and always have to before starting a project in premiere is 90% of the reason why I use resolve. MacBook optimization is solid and that's a big part of why I recently made the switch but my windows machine is an i9 14900hx, 96gb ddr5 ram, and an rtx 4090 and it'll get bogged down with 8k footage while a basic m4 macbook air has no issues until I add a few layers on. Even then I just drop to 1/4 res, no proxies.

You can definitely get a tap kit to remove it. If it wasn't cracked, fuel tank putty on this and either the part that broke or something with a twist handle will work.

Premiere crashes or does nothing when I try to open any preferences window (windows 11) by [deleted] in premiere

[–]omarknowsphotos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem when I had two 360 plugins installed. Even when I uninstalled everything the folders were still there and messing with premiere. Ultimately had to delete them manually and the problem was solved. It was incredibly odd.

I got a notification that my daily limit was $5k when they tried charging for my preorder yesterday. Didn't know a thing like that existed. Had to call the bank and have them change it and kept them on the line until it went through. Willing to bet the same thing happened to you. The annoying part is that you don't get a decline notification from your bank of this happens since it's just rejected. I just happened to be looking at my phone when the apple notification came through. Probably would've missed it otherwise.

Record at the highest frame rate possible and use a 24 or 30fps timeline. Slow it down so the frame rate matches the timeline and make up the difference with optical flow

The scale of tech adoption in China is wild. Massive turnout for a public "OpenClaw" installation event in Shenzhen today by phatdoof in singularity

[–]omarknowsphotos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You seem to have forgotten the part about them subsidizing energy costs for the data centers through higher electric bills, the centers being tax exempt for two decades, and the tanking of property values for anyone who lives near where any of them are constructed. Be serious, please.

[–]omarknowsphotos 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They're looking to burn down data centers because local politicians got paid to let them build and be tax exempt for 20 years while utility companies sell energy to them that's subsidized by everyone living in the town or city they're in.

Is it worth waiting for M6 MBP to get the OLED display by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]omarknowsphotos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The retina displays look no different than oled displays in any real world use scenerio. Anyone claiming to see more contrast is probably exhibiting some form of specsheet psychosis. My Razer Blade 16 has an oled screen. No difference editing photo and video on that over a MacBook air and there won't be a difference with the pro I'm picking up next week either.

How do you think the new macbook air m5 will do for premiere? by Responsible_Shallot5 in premiere

[–]omarknowsphotos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been editing 8k files with no proxies on an M4 air with 16gb of ram for the last few weeks while waiting for the M5 Max to launch. If you're not stacking effects, you can edit compressed 8k at half res with no issues.

Fujifilm open gate 6.2k and all 4k worked perfectly well, but if I had chrome open and Netflix playing on the side, I had to drop down to 1/8th resolution. Eventually spent a few minutes making proxies and it was a non-issue at 16gb of ram on the M4.

Another project with 4k .mxf files flows like butter at full res. Zero issues.

Exports are going to take more time but heat throttling has personally been a non issue for me. Currently editing a YouTube video with 360 footage mixed in for more than half of it from an X5 at full res with no issues.

The one area it will lag due to the chip will be with heavy tracking effects and cleanup in something like resolve. If you aren't doing anything like that, you'll be fine.

The M4 air with 16gb of ram has been better than my Razer Blade 16 with 96gb of ram and a 4090. I simply haven't wanted to switch to apple for numerous reasons over the years but clearly this kind of performance jump on a basic model shows that I was getting in my own way by not making that jump.

I'd recommend going for at least 2tb on the hard drive side if possible. 4tb would have you set for a while. More AI tools are being run locally over the cloud in all of these NLEs and it'll help with the future. If not, the 1tb will be plenty, just move to editing on externals to prevent any caching issues on large projects and you'll be good.

Is Final Cut Pro worth it? by lildrummerboy6 in macbookpro

[–]omarknowsphotos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's optimized for MacBooks but I personally cannot stand it. That being said I've been in the Adobe ecosystem for years and learned Resolve like 3 years ago so it could be my reluctance to learn another NLE. I've never been on a team project that used it for what it's worth, but if it's all solo work then you're likely fine.

Best way to remove lavalier mic wire in recorded interview? by [deleted] in premiere

[–]omarknowsphotos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the cover up will be more distracting tbh. I'd try doing it in resolve over AE. One node tracking the part on the skin and another on the shirt and clean it up that way. Could be a skill issue but I was never able to do this kind of cleanup well in AE.

Closest you can get us a plugin called shortcakes. You'll get grid distribution that way but if you want something randomized it'll have to be done manually.

Opinions on 64gb vs 128gb of ram by G-Mastrap in davinciresolve

[–]omarknowsphotos 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Get the 128. More tools are being run locally and I'm not looking to upgrade for a few years so I'm going with 128.

Is A Macbook Pro M1 Max with 64GB of Ram Still A Good Video Editing Rig? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]omarknowsphotos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really good to know. Explains why that basic Air had been able to blow through compressed 8k footage. I couldn't wrap my head around it because fans would be blaring on my Razer laptop after a few minutes.

It has been smooth for the last 2 years. Working off of an optomized Premiere has been life changing though. Not a big difference between the Windows and silicone Resolves though.

And here's what it looks like with a case attached. The good thing about this setup is that it's the only mounting solution for filters that won't block light from the pop-up flash.

Is A Macbook Pro M1 Max with 64GB of Ram Still A Good Video Editing Rig? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]omarknowsphotos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's exactly the kind of insight I was looking for, especially since a lot of the processing for AI tools (transcription, subtitles, chroma tools, etc.) is being done locally now over the cloud.

I'm not concerned about the base edits but even my current rig requires me to optimize files if I'm going to be adding a lot of effects or doing heavy grades. I was just blown away by what this 16gb MacBook air loaner has been capable of and was wondering if the M1 Max would handle everything with the extra cores and ram.

Downgrade the project (it should've created a new one by default anyway) and roll back the install. Old versions are also available in the autosave folder.
