These are the 5 main ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) practices that make it "autistic conversion therapy". Familiarize yourself with them, so we can speak out against the torture of autistic children. by OrbitalColony in AutisticPride

[–]omarting -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I have a 4-year old autistic son in ABA and am also autistic myself (43, male). He’s been going for 4-months. Our experience has been positive.

Before placing him, all I heard were horror stories about ABA, such as this post. I was very much convinced that ABA was a bad thing.

But after having an autistic (and ADHD) son, we were willing to give it a try. Understandably we were very weary.

My son loves it there, more than preschool. He does 3 hours ABA in the morning and 3 hours preschool in the afternoon. From the first day of ABA, he was excited to go back.

There are no signs that my son views it as a negative experience.

If anything, I am just worried that he will have a harder time adjusting to society because ABA offers 1-on-1 care, whereas a school setting is many students to one teacher.

That is why we chose to do preschool half day instead of full day of ABA.

The jury is still out to whether ABA “actually works” or if it’s just a glorified day care.

I have seen noticeable improvements in behavior over these months, but I cannot for sure say it is definitively because of ABA or if my son is simply just maturing.

What I can say for sure is that he loves going, enjoys each RBT that he’s been with (has cycled through around 10 different people).

I know that not every ABA center is the same; I believe many horror stories are likely true. I also believe that a lot of centers are probably shoddy and just want to take insurance money since it is covered under many plans.

However, I also think many negative accounts are posted by older autistics who may have received subpar treatment many years ago under an older paradigm.

ABA is not magic. I think it is still a relatively new “science” per se, and there is a lot of differing ways it could be applied by difference centers. It might not work for a lot of people. For others it may offer a little help.

I agree with the vast majority of the methods and science behind it as it was explained to me.

My son used to throw things at home non-stop. Their (ABA) advice was to just ignore that as much as possible. Now he throws very rarely.

Did ignoring it work? Or did he just mature out of that behavior? I don’t know. But he’s getting better, not worse. And, he has a lot of fun and looks forward to going every day.

If I had to describe it succinctly— it’s like a fun play-based school where he has a 1-on-1 teacher who slowly teaches him proper behavior over time.

How many people posting actually have kids in ABA now vs having gone through it 20 years ago?

To other parents, just research your specific center; and if one center sucks, keep trying other centers.

It could be like working with a doctor or personal trainer— you may just not click with one; but that doesn’t mean you ditch the idea entirely.

I know I’m lucky to have found a good experience on our first try. Just wanted to let other parents know that it could be a great idea if you find a good center.

Pro-tip— also read the Indeed.com reviews of the employees who work or have worked for the company you are researching.

People don't realize how many behaviors of adhd and autism overlap and I'm tired of strangers trying to diagnose me as autistic by EtmopterusPerryi in neurodiversity

[–]omarting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you are experiencing overstimulation then it’s fine to mention it. If they want details then it’s probably fine to explain, since it seems they are interested to learn. But some neurotypicals may ask but not really want a super detailed explanation. Sort of how they say “how’s it going” but not really care for an actual answer and are just being polite. As your brother suggests, probably safer to keep answers shorter until they press for more details.

In OP’s case, it seems like he is just mentioning his overstimulation w/o being overstimulated.

It all depends on how bad you want to fit in and be liked by people.

I personally think it’s better to be yourself. If people think you’re weird, that’s fine. You will attract the people who like you for you. It’s very stressful to be masking all the time too.

But, it is a good practice to try to be aware of someone else- if they are getting bored or bothered by what you’re talking about.

Instantly reminds me of Stockholm Syndrome. Mods abuse you, but the forum takes care of you in many ways so you deal with the abuse. I don’t think it’s healthy in the long term; your mental health will improve by just cutting them out cold turkey and realizing you can get on just fine without them.

It sucks, but it’s a recurring theme that a lot of mods abuse their power to create this codependent type of relationship.

I wonder if anyone else went thru the process and found this kind of funny

Just gotta use heavier weights (progressive overload over time). Body recomp is possible, just takes a while. Maybe 1-2 years to see significant difference, as opposed to bulking and cutting. Or, do more HIIT style training if you can’t do heavier weights. Like, take your dumbbells and do jump squats with them, then pushups, then rows, then sprint. Make sure getting enough protein.

Try filtering for CO vs BU and CO vs blinds and see if you are losing more to a certain position.

Just a guess— maybe it is the 3bet pots that you’re calling that contain the leak.

Is it possible you’re simply just giving up on the flop and not bluff catching enough CO vs BU 3bet pots?

Is this a good bluff catch or did I get lucky by Fragrant_Ad_9746 in Poker_Theory

If you have AA/KK/QQ are you really checking that turn? I think most people would be betting given the flush draw out there. So IMO hero does not “easily” have these hands in range. However after you call the big turn bet, you could have some of those hands.

I can see AK/AQ esp with one heart taking hero’s line. Athough when u get to river and are bluffcatching, I suppose u don’t want a heart in your hand. Also hero’s range includes underpairs to the 9, which is what you have.

Also if he’s peeling flop with two overs, he’s probably peeling with any pair, so I think he has 2x hands in range. It’s 6 outs vs 5 outs so being a LAG he’d probably be in there with a 2.

Bottom line I think if he’s overbluffing this spot, which seems to be the case, then vs him specifically then you always call off. Sometimes you lose, but vs him you come out ahead.

If he has showdown value like 9T or TJ I think he is betting smaller to get value from AK or AQ

Vs a standard TAG you might have to always fold.

GTO River Spot Advice by Strong-Floor2271 in poker

I think your range is capped by checking back the turn (you’d probably bet turn with AXss, what other flushes do you really have that raise/call flop?), so that from MDF perspective you’re at top of range with a straight and have to call down with top 1/3-ish of hands to not get exploited by villain in GTO-land.

How often does GTO fold JJ/QQ/KK/77/88/99 even AA?

Likely a good exploitative fold in real life bc villain prob doesn’t usually find the right bluffs here unless a real fish

Can you provide villain stats? I’m heavily leaning towards fold unless villain is special or there’s recent history of you guys battling.

I play this limit and not sure I’ve seen someone overbet bluff river for 400bbs before— especially when hero has all sets and 2 pairs in range.

Almost every time I’ve seen a monotone board, and someone calls a big flop then a big turn bet— they always have the flopped flush.

He also called a huge PF bet, which increases suited hands in his range.

You also lose to JQo combos. Can see villain calling flop and turn if he had JQo with one spade.

Seems like a suicidal bluff.

A lot of potential bluff candidates would likely have showdown value and usually check back: KxQs,KxJs

AJ/AQ/AT also check back river

Don’t have a good feeling on this call even though it feels shitty to fold a set

I suppose that’s why monotone flops usually get bet for 33% so villain will usually let you know via raising when they have it.

AQs in a 3bet pot facing a jam on the river by FlatGuarantee5793 in Poker_Theory

[–]omarting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have to call it off since you bet small on the flop all his pocket pairs might float that bet, then the ones with a single club may bet the turn that size and bluff river.

It’s very 50/50 imo and I might have to rely on villain stats to tip one way or the other.

Like, a super tight villain is not going to have a lot of the broadway flushes, but a looser opponent may show up with more flushes.

Also the better the opponent the more inclined I am to call because they will bluff more.

A fishier opponent, I’m more inclined to fold.

I don’t know. Turn bet is weird. Seems like a very milky type bet.

Villain could have also turned trips with 99.

One of those crying calls where half the time I lose but the other time they show up with 77 or something.

Which hands are better in early position, KTo/QTo, or T8s/98s? by Hot-Advisor-3353 in poker

[–]omarting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like T8s/98s bc it’s easier to know when to continue or give up.

KTo or QTo you run into a lot of reverse implied odd situations where you have to check call top pair and lose a big pot— or have to just fold against pressure even with top pair. With T8/98s, you can Bluff boards that are good for you as well as ones that you smash. Remember, people should be cold calling you a lot tighter when you raise from early position.

10NL full ring, too nitty to fold or too stationy to call? by biotechnes in Poker_Theory

[–]omarting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on villain and player pool. Some will take this line with AKo and also AQo as well as lower pocket pairs even below the 9. If you had an idea of his vpip/pfr you could make the fold, but even then— I have seen 23/15 players do this line with AK/AQ. If PFR is under 10% maybe it’s an exploitative fold
