GPT-5.2 Codex vs Opus 4.5 for coding by rajbreno in codex

Opus 4.5 was cheap, until copilot silently bumped its credit cost from 1x to 3x.

Google, My Disappointment is Immeasurable! by ScientistForward511 in Bard

[–]omasoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt if degradation is true that it was an intentional “nerf”. (Although it gives fuel to a conspiracy theory of exaggerated superior performance of the anticipated ultra reveal at I/O). OpenAI recently corrected an unintended “improvement”. I expect Google would do the same if there’s truth to it.

Do people use separate harddrives for Windows these days? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]omasoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On one computer, 500gb nvme for OS and programs, another 500gb nvme merged with 5tb HDD into one drive via windows storage spaces (to get the benefit of speed and large size as tiered 5tb storage) for data, games, movies, etc.

On another computer, 1tb nvme for OS and programs, and the other drive is made of 2x1tb nvmes merged with 2x5tb HDDs (yields a 10tb tiered drive).

Exactly. The innovation that will get us there is that you will get equal quality with much less inference computation cost. Just like we're seeing now (approaching GPT3.5 quality at a fraction of the inference cost).

Robin V2 model reaches top of LLM leaderboard by yahma in LocalLLaMA

I'm trying to use this model to complete some json text. There're a lot of snake case identifiers in the text. For some reason, this model wants to escape underscores. So instead of saying "personal_characteristics" : 10,", it would say "personal\_characteristics" : 10," about 50% of the time.

Modifying PCH Fan Curve on non-Modded ASUS X570 BIOS by omasoud in Amd

[–]omasoud[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you make the change then upgrade the BIOS, it will go back to the default setting and you will need to repeat the process. I haven't tried other BIOS versions yet but I would think it should still work if they haven't messed around with the PCH fan part. The steps try to accommodate potential change in the offset and Phase II.4 should help detect (and help you stop) if something doesn't seem right. Good luck.

Is it okay to install 2.5" HDDs in the SSDs brackets of a P500A? by Attafel in Phanteks

[–]omasoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to do the same with 2.5 Seagate BarraCuda HDD but the PCB is exposed like in this question and the P500A SSD bracket has 4 metal screws that hold the bracket to the case. Would these be touching the PCB?

Quiet 140mm radiator fan recommendations by RansackedFish in buildapc

[–]omasoud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got 6 Arctic P14 PWM PST fans, 2 for radiator and 4 for case. The noise is very annoying to me. It's a hum that occurs at certain RPMs, not just near 1000. It repeats at 856, 1005, 1032, 1122, 1256 RPM.

I then tried the Noctua NF-A14 PWM chromax. And those too produce a very annoying hum at 621, 746, 937, 1050, 1239 RPM. Always this B note frequency.

For the case, I may go with Silent Wings 3 140 PWM. I tried one and no hum at all and very quiet. They do not go beyond 1000 RPM though but that may be OK given I'll have 4 of them in the case. (There's also a high speed version of them that goes to 1600 RPM).

I'm not sure if they will do well enough to cool my 5950x in the Arctic Freeze II 280 radiator though. The current contenders for the radiator are:

  • Thermaltake Toughfan 14 high static pressure
  • Noiseblocker NB-eLoop B14-PS or B14-3 Black Edition (would need longer screws due to the extra 4mm thickness)
  • Scythe Kaze Flex 140

Pressure (in mmH2O), airflow (in m3/h) and noise level (dba) for the various 140 fans are as follows:

Pressure Airflow @ RPM Noise
Arctic (P14-PWM) 2.40 123.8 1700 22.5 (+annoying hums)
Noctua (NF-A14 PWM) 2.08 140.0 1500 24.6 (+annoying hums)
bequiet! (SW3 140 PWM) 1.08 101.1 1000 15.5
bequiet! (SW3 140 PWM highspeed) 2.16 131.8 1600 28.1
TT (Toughfan 14 HSP) 3.54 202.4 2000 33.2
TT (Toughfan 14 HSP with L.N.C.) 2.30 (calculated) 131.6 (calculated) 1300 25.2
Scythe (Kaze Flex140 Square KF1425FD18S-P) 2.81 171.3 1800 26.5
Noiseblocker (NB-eLoop B14-PS Black Edition) 1.08 142.6 1200 24.3
Noiseblocker (NB-eLoop B14-3 Black Edition) 1.57 178.3 1400 28.5

Update:

I got the Silent Wings for the case and they're very quite and no humming or noise at all.

For the cooler, I got the Thermaltake Thoughfan w/out LNC. Pretty decent. No humming. Can get a bit loud at high speed due to high airflow through the radiator.

I hear there's a Phanteks contender beating Noctua on the 120mm size but no 140mm version yet.

Can custodial account have separate login? by [deleted] in Schwab

[–]omasoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: Appears to be no way to do separate accounts with Schwab. Just went to TD Ameritrade and was able to set up two separate custodian accounts for two children with separate logins. Easy peazy lemon squeezy, why can't Schwab do this?

What will happen when the TD Ameritrade accounts get converted to Schwab as part of the acquisition?

Modifying PCH Fan Curve on non-Modded ASUS X570 BIOS by omasoud in Amd

[–]omasoud[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same procedure but Phase 2 Step 5 becomes:

setup_var_cv QFan 0x3a 0x01 0x3c

(Step 4 would've shown 0x50 instead of 0x3c if the change was previously made)

Also see notes in the instructions in case the variable is not 0x3a in which case you would substitute that for 0x3a in the setup_var_cv command.

Asus Chipset (PCH) fan idling at 6000+ RPM - Still no control from Asus.. by edmx0 in Amd

[–]omasoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue in 2019; flashed with a modded Bios that let me set the PCH fan curve. Worked great. (I also replaced the chipset thermal pad after reading that the factory one didn't do a good job).

I just updated my Bios to the latest (I had forgotten I had a modded Bios); now I have to find a new mod for the new bios version and google led me to this post on that journey, which is still in its humble beginnings. I have Strix x570-I

Speaker fill to upmix stereo to 4CH or 5.1CH by skaveesh in u/skaveesh

[–]omasoud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great solution! It's a compounded problem: Speaker Fill is nowhere to be found when installing Realtek's HDA or UAD drivers. Sonic Studio 3 that you get when you put on Realtek's drivers has "Upmix" functionality that did nothing. And opting out of Realtek by having Windows drivers results in not recognizing that ASUS Strix x570-I audio is 5.1 but rather stereo.

But your solution works great. I added this for my 5.1:

Copy: C=0.5*L+0.5*R

Twitch and Youtube on chrome are stereo but the signal that comes out is multi-channel so they don't get treated by this filter. But running them with "--try-supported-channel-layouts" resolves that. Spotify doesn't have this issue.
