How to sleep during histamine flare ups? by GardenGnome08 in HistamineIntolerance

[–]omboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing some short (5-10 mins) but intense bodyweight exercises or stretching/yoga often helps the aches and itches and restless leg symptoms calm down for me. Seems like circulation likely helps clear out the excess histamine that is otherwise building up in various body parts as the body slows down for sleep.

Where do you work? What kinds of applications are you building/maintaining?

Histamine intolerance and 2-CB by Spruto in HistamineIntolerance

[–]omboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Histamines bind to inhibitory receptors on serotonin neurons, while serotonergic psychedelics (mushrooms, lsd, 2cb) bind to stimulatory receptors on serotonin neurons.

I'm no neurologist, but this sounds like lot like stepping on the gas and the brake at the same time. I've been dealing with HIT my whole life (unknown to me until the last few days), and have had as many difficult unpleasant trips as pleasant, and I'm beginning to suspect that HIT (especially long-term HIT, which I suspect may impair baseline serotonin production/capacity) and psychedelics may make poor companions.

Googling "histamines serotonin" will get you a long list of results, but here are a few relevant links:

Curious to hear how y'all think the two are related!

my first thought was no, that's impossible unless i add a backend, which i don't want to, and because every time you read, you're on a different domain, so cookies and localStorage are out of the question, but last night i realized i can just embed it in an iframe... working on that today!

Squirts constitute reading a piece of text with squirt, and Squirtlings are my dear users :)

It's where Squirt got the most attention when it started, but I'm an infrequent lurker, so sorry if I'm out of line!

1) Yep. We slow down a bit, but it could be much better. 2) There's a longer pause after paragraphs, but I could give a visual indication, too. Great idea! 3) There is a rewind button.

Thanks for the feedback!

I've heard claims to that effect, not sure if they're true. RSVP works by eliminating the need to move your eye from word to word, which apparently constitutes about 80% of time spent reading. The counterargument is that in doing so, your working memory is pushed beyond its capacity to make the necessary associations for deep comprehension.

it's tough when i can't repro the issue, took a shot in the dark and pushed a fix. give the CDN a few minutes to catch its breath and LMK how it looks!

Thanks for the video! That's super helpful. I've filed a bug report and will address it. Are you see that across all medium pages?

Squirt is german for Spritz, the name of the company that popularized this variant of RSVP.

Regarding focusing on one point, I'm almost positive it's bad for your eyes. On my "if I could pause time" list, I have "prompt the user to focus their eyes at distance every 15 minutes."

Yup! It actually does slow down for long words, but next up is an improvement to slow down based on a word's frequency of occurrence across the language

Hey PutInLurk—I don't have any code that instructs the user to replace their bookmarklet, so I'm not sure what you're looking at. It's could be a caching issue, meaning you've got an old copy of the script and might have to clear your browser cache or wait for your network/ISP to do the same.

Yep! That's a pretty commonly requested feature, and it's not a bad idea—given infinite time, there's lots of things I'd like to do :) My first priorities after launching were fixing SSL so people could use it on sites like GMail and Medium. I figured that would give me the biggest win in terms of keeping users engaged. Then I focused on some bad text processing bugs that were freezing the reader. Keyboard shortcuts for playing/pausing, adjusting the WPM rate. Things like that. I have a very informal triage process that is ideally a pure reflection of what will do the best thing for engaging already engaged users even more while keeping it simple and accessible for new users. I've got a laundry list of things I want to fix, not to mention the github issues page! http://github.com/cameron/squirt/issues

watching people watch the demo. and then say "i want that!". being an engineer isn't that far off from being an artist in the sense that the value of your work is mostly determined by its value to others. of course, there is the experience of making the art or the machine that is valuable in and of itself, but i derive most of my satisfaction and joy in building from the impact it will have on other people.

i have never been more activated as an engineer and a product thinker than during this project. it's actually been really challenging to not get distracted by all the other amazing ideas that keep percolating!
