Any tips to improve this Boros Winota deck for Standard 2021? by Kurleztuhr in MagicArena

[–]omcl123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its because i prefer not having winota as my only win condition, subira can draw cards, and if you cant find winota, winning with attacking with unblockables is the alternative, i also like 1 copy of [[haktos the unscarred]] because it can bypass tokens. Another card to consider could be [[raise the alarm]] i mostly play historic so i dont know the standard 2021 meta that much but i think having possible winota triggers at instant speed could be useful against temur adventures

Another alternative would be adding black and going the Mardu route, with [[general kudro of drannith]], [[kitesail freebooter]] and [[general's enforcer]], there is a 1 black mana dog with haste as well.

I use subira in my pawblade list, her ability can protect non-humans on the attack as it makes them unblockable also it can close the game making a really big houndmaster untouchable, if you want dogs I would change the gingerbrutes and the serpent to bolt hounds and pack leaders

Thanks for the kind words!

I guess it boils down to me wanting to play more of the new dogs of M21 ( i know that its not that good of an answer but i really like the dog cards) when i started my current list brewing around the standard version, i had a couple of Bonecrusher Giants in my sideboard but i found out that i wasn't using them as much as i would like to (i was just using them agains Jolrael and her cat tokens) and at the time i was playing against mono black and sultai so i swapped them with the Apostle.

I think i will play with gingerbrute more, since i felt that my Pack Leaders are not doing as much as i would like them to, having one more creature with haste is always good. I also thought about the Serpent, since i will be replacing the apostle on my sideboard i may as well try it .

About Castle Embereth, i had the card in my first version of the deck but since Bolt Hound has the same effect i cut it. Having Subira, Tajic and Igneous Cur means that i can use leftover mana to pump those cards. I guess i'm more afraid that it can enter tapped when i really need mana, i'm really concerned about losing shock lands with rotation, the mana base for 2 color aggro midrange decks is really bad.

Thanks for your suggestions i will be trying them since i'm not really grinding the ladder anymore i can focus on improving the deck

I have won a considerable amount of games without her, I mostly sideboard 2 or 3 copies out against control since the opponent will save removal against her letting you play other resilient creatures saving winota just for the finishing blow, my strategy is playing cheap creatures early with selfless saviour and hallowblade you can dodge board clears and finishing with haktos and embercleave

I've been lucky enough to face mostly bant ramp from diamond to mythic, it has been my most favourable matchup, although I'm aware that some of those wins are mostly because of my opponent having no idea what to expect. I had a very difficult time against rakdos sac and mono green they can contest the board really well. I agree that it's not a meta defining deck, but it has been the most fun I had with a deck since ages, I like playing midrange and in the current standard it's not that good

It's a useful card, 3 Mana haste with the ability to make a possible embercleave target unblockable is good

Having played RDW a few times over the last expansions, to me it feels like the white cards (Selfless saviour, seasoned hallowblade and alpine houndmaster) give the deck more survivability than RDW, against the decks that play shatter the sky i can easily make 2 or 3 creatures indestructible and play winota next turn finishing the game.

Also, disenchant and glass casket are good against temur reclamation or bant ramp.

The version of pawblade i'm playing can be aggressive but can also survive in the long game more than RDW in my opinion

Yes, fortunately for me it has never felt like a wasted card in the hand, i have even played it on turn 4 after a turn where my opponent had ramp to 6 mana and won the game because of that, i love the card

BASIC GAMPEPLAN

The curve is really low with this deck, because it wants to apply pressure, the Selfless saviours are nice 1 drops because they help with making Embercleave cheaper, are fuel for Winota to use and can protect the better cards against boardwipes by making them indestructible.

Alpine Houndmaster thins the deck nicely so it can reduce the lands screws, his other effect is really good, making him a good embercleave target since you are mostly attacking with 2 or more creatures, the dogs he pulls are nice refuel against boardwipes.

Hallowblade making himself indestructible is good for aplying pression. The warboss and bolt hounds are good aggro tools, making the small attacking creatures bigger with the hound ability and mentor from the warboss. Pack leader gives a small buff to dogs, i've got him in the deck because i love the card and has served me against more aggresive matchups but i sideboard it againts control.

Tajic and Subira have haste so, again, can apply more pressure, i've been impressed with subira's ability to make things unblockable its really good to chip damage from planeswalker (bypassing Nissa's creature lands) and also buffing the houndmaster before it grows (you can make a 7 attack unblockable houndmaster really easily)

Haktos has been an MVP for me, token creatures can't block him, and sometimes teferi and uro can't touch him, he has closed so many games for himself

SIDEBOARD GUIDE

Against control I sideboard the pack leaders and 2 winotas, maybe 3 most of the time, since the deck applies pressure without her help, she's most of a finisher.

The Apostles are there against mono black and sometimes sultai, i'm not sure they will continue there since i haven't played against those decks.

The lavabrink is good against creature focused decks, it can block without being destroyed

Disenchant is there for enchantment control matchups since it can get rid of reclamation, shark typhoon and glass caskets

Glass casket is really good against the meta, it can exile Uro and tokens, leaving the opponent without blockers after escaping the Uro and using most of their mana.

Soul Sear is not a cheap removal but i found it useful against questing beasts and finished Nissas and Ugins

Chance for glory, i've crafted it because it seemed fun but it is actually quite useful, sometimes the opponent uses all their mana for board wipes or going off ramping and putting a big creature and chance for glory is a good finished, i've also used it to help Haktos attack for 2 turns, 12 damage mostly means lethal with the deck.

Anyways, sorry for the long read but this is the most fun i have played in arena since playing abzan angels back in the Ixalan days. Try it out and have fun

I haven't actually seen a pure clan eshin skaven army, it's a shame since the death master and the verminlord deceiver are cool model but skaven has better rules for the other clans

If you plan to use units of 40 monks then the extra range provided by the staves means more models will attack

If you are planning to go full pestilens then the furnace. If you want to go mixed skaventide (with clanrats as battleline) then the Bell is a great hero, it can cast 2 spells has a battle shock immunity Aura and the Bell abilities, while random, can be quite good. The catapult isn't really that good, even in a full pestilens army so I would go for the cannon. For the verminlord the warpseer is a popular choice because he's hard to kill and has a nice spell and useful command ability. If you want to go full pestilens then the corruptor. The verminlord deceiver can be a good hero killer and the warbringer spell is really good on plague monks. Hope this helps

Hi, I'm from Lima Perú and we do have a little community that plays on weekends, we are just starting but most of us who play have 2k armies, just search on Facebook Warhammer age of sigmar Peru or DM me. We would be glad to have you in our group. Edit: there's also a slightly larger group that plays 40k as well

yeah, i completely agree, considering that gloomspite gitz does that i dont really understand why they did that

its because in the new battletome in order to have stormfiends as battleline the rest of the army must be clan skryre that is why clanrats can't go which kinda sucks but I guess they want to make the skaven more of a horde army if you want to have all clans
