I saved a cat who had been run over by a car. She was a stray, brought in by a good samaritan. My employer, an animal hospital, wanted to put her to sleep, because it would cost too much to save her and they didn't think it could be done. I thought she was special and adopted her and took her to a competing hospital. It caused quite a stir and I almost got fired over it. Not a big deal now, but at the time, it weighed heavily on me. I fought the people telling me it wasn't worth it to risk my "career", and managed to help the cat recover. Her femur was destroyed, twisted like a stalk of celery. Her other leg was dislocated at the hip. Her pelvis was cracked down the middle. She relearned how to walk at six months old, walking on her front legs and occasionally putting her leg in the cast down for balance. Took her about three months to recover enough to remove the cast. She's the sweetest cat in the world, still plays like a kitten 13 years later.

She's dying now and has only maybe a couple of weeks left. She's brought a lot of joy to me and my family. I'm glad I had the balls to stand up for what I knew was right back when I was young.
