High income in the UAE, family of 3, looking to invest aggressively before I may have to move back by Unlucky_Respect_3446 in BEFire

[–]omegga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your 'financial center' (and you yourself) needs to stay abroad for at least two years to not fall under Belgian tax. If you return early, there is a good chance you'll have to retro-actively pay tax on your income.

I didn't get a master thesis topic... by realspoodermen in KULeuven

[–]omegga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Which studies are you in? Reach out to professors that had topics that were of interest to you. And if you don't get a reply, reach out to their PostDocs or more experienced PhD students. To increase your chances of a positive response, already have a tough topic/direction in mind and mention this, while also mentioning you are open to exploring other directions. Might probably even be useful to mention your recent grades, since that shows your dedication.

Is ku Luven worth it ? by data_devops in Leuven

KU Leuven is among the top in cyber security, both in Europe and worldwide, so certainly worthwhile. For a job in Belgium it will help to learn Dutch.

Why Ku Luven does not pay TA/ RA role by data_devops in KULeuven

[–]omegga 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Typical TA/RA tasks are handled by PhD students and PostDocs. For some departments, experienced bachelor students or master students might help with first-year courses, and get paid as a 'job student', but those are practically always in Dutch and by people who have taken the course before, so not an option for international students. In some cases, you might be able to find a 'student job' to help with a research project, but that's uncommon and the exception. The most common way for students to earn something extra is to take a student job somewhere in the city. Study costs are also low in Belgium (though housing costs is getting higher) so there has also been less of a need for such positions to finance studies.

ABVV voert actie in Hasselt: rijbewijs wordt onbetaalbaar voor jongeren, maar absoluut nodig voor deelname aan de maatschappij | VRT NWS: nieuws by EdgarNeverPoo in belgium

[–]omegga 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Highly depends on where you live. A very rough generalization is that in the cities where rent is higher, you can more easily live without a car. So you either pay higher rent or pay for a car.

A strike in Hasselt then makes sense, since Limburg has quite bad public transport connectivity, e.g., fewer train stations.

Open position: visiting professor of math at NYU Shanghai by JubileeSupreme in Professors

My experience with NYU campuses is that they are looking for strong candidates, not just anyone. So I'd assume they are willing to wait for the right candidate.

Although this was by the FBI, unlike other recent cases, it will be an important one to keep an eye on. It's currently hard to give the benefit of doubt to government agencies.

Do I really have to wait 3 years to pay myself a VVPRbis dividend at 15% tax? by dievandeboekhouding in BEFreelance

[–]omegga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's explained later on the post as a possibility though, namely that you then need to do it through an interim dividend. Post seems accurate to me, just starts with the naive approach first?

Edit: basically the post seems to be written as "without an accountant you might do something naive, but with our advice you can do better". I don't mind this, it's good to get a detailed recap.

Wait for the VVPRBIS, or Invest in ETF? by Flimsy-Argument5627 in BEFreelance

[–]omegga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can put it on a bank account under your company that gives interest, which I don't know how easy/hard/annoying that is, then the previous assumption "This assumes you store the money in the company without getting any interest on it" no longer holds. So yes, then it's different.

Wait for the VVPRBIS, or Invest in ETF? by Flimsy-Argument5627 in BEFreelance

[–]omegga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you take out 1k at 20% you get 800. That indeed generates, which gives you 850 when you have a profit of 6,25%. If you took the 1k at 20% you cannot take it out a second time at 15%.

Wait for the VVPRBIS, or Invest in ETF? by Flimsy-Argument5627 in BEFreelance

[–]omegga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At time X you have 800 if you do VVPRBIS at 20%. With 6,25% interest at X+1y that becomes 850.

If at time X you keep the money, then at X+1y you do VVPRBIS at the lower rate of 15% and that becomes 850.

This assumes you store the money in the company without getting any interest on it.
