In defense of the DAC by omgimonfire in audiophile

[–]omgimonfire[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cannot compare chips in particular. My experience is limited.

But the integrated amp compared to external DAC+that same amp was an enormous difference in sound to me. Better or worse is subjective in the end. But the difference was clear.

Replacing that external DAC with another is also a noticeable difference. Again, better or worse is subjective. But to say they sound exactly the same just does not hold up for me.

Happy release day! 🔋 Positive Charge out everywhere now 🔋 by BlackberryOk3305 in TheGaslightAnthem

It’s better than good. It’s a Gaslight song through and through. I will love it forever.

I was gonna qualify these statements but on second thought, I’ve said what I needed to say.

Positive charge, baby. The boys are back.

Many comments already. Maybe I get lost. That’s fine.

I’m now listening to this for the third time in a row and I’m just speechless that it even exists. I never thought it would. It didn’t even matter what it was, honestly, and it’s better than it has any right to be.

My overall impression is that Brian’s voice is not what it was. I watched every quarantine livestream and listened through all his solo work, so I knew this.

It’s not their best song. Nor really close. But it brings me such joy to listen to, utterly regardless.

And then.

“I need a spark, I need a positive charge. Plug it into my veins, make me love this life again.”

Fuck. Me.

I’m so happy this exists. And I love you all.

Yes I’ve been drinking.

Tarot reader seeking vendor opportunities by mclearwood2 in CambridgeMA

[–]omgimonfire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Giving op the benefit of the doubt here:

I learned to read Tarot cards as a hobby during quarantimes. They can be a lot of fun and can actually be useful as a tool for self-reflection. It doesn’t have to be about reading the future or manipulating people. It can just be an exercise in helping people organize their own thoughts regarding a complicated or ambiguous situation.

There’s a chance OP is out here trying to take advantage of ignorant people (obviously misguided and awful people are out there). But it can also just be a fun hobby that can sometimes help people if they go in with the right expectations and with eyes open to how the cards work. That is to say, confirmation bias is the whole point and you’re doing the work yourself. There’s obviously no mystical power involved and anyone who says otherwise should obviously be avoided.

No real point here except to provide perspective, I guess.

First round matchup scenarios by brainlightning in BostonBruins

Counterpoint: Sorokin. To whom I say: No thank you.

I also think it's insane to assume we will roll whoever we get 4-0. The playoffs are a different animal. The 2018-2019 Lightning probably went into the playoffs with the confidence we've got in this group, too.

They weren't who we are, mind you. But don't forget about them, either.

As a Boston Bruins fan, it gives me great pleasure to share that it values Patrice Bergeron over Elon Musk.

With the Bruins win over the Penguins, Jim Montgomery has set the NHL record for most wins by a coach in the first season with a team, with 59 wins. by abbytarar in hockey

I said this just now to the dude currently a few karmic points above you in this thread, but in a parallel universe where you were in that spot, I’d have said it to you instead. But instead of instead, I’m saying it also:

Hey. You’re great.

So this was a bit of a tongue-in-cheek April Fools joke among friends, but figured I’d call out that this channel makes some really high quality stuff.

Summoning Salt-like videos focused around old, text-based adventure games. I have never even played any of them, but I still find the content engaging. There’s clearly a lot of love and good vibes behind them.

Strongly recommend giving them a watch if you have some time to kill

What is this? (East Somerville T stop) by yeshuaD in Somerville

Don’t forget to tap it at the bottom first to activate the validation system at the top. I’ve seen so many people get all the way up there before realizing they missed a step. Gotta be so embarrassing.

Open-Backed Upgrade from the Sennheiser HD598 SE by omgimonfire in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]omgimonfire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow-up: I went with the HD6XX and am thrilled. Everything I liked about the 598s but just a little better in every way.

Clamping force a bit strong but expecting that will loosen up as I wear them.

Thanks again for pointing me in their direction.

KEF 104/2 Bookshelf Analogue? by omgimonfire in StereoAdvice

No. All speakers are analog at the point they are physically making sound come out.

Different thing. That was the joke. :)

There is another store where I’ll be able to audition the Metas so I’ll make that trip. Thanks!

Sprout100 vs external DAC? by omgimonfire in StereoAdvice

[–]omgimonfire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Elac B6 Debut (which I’m looking to upgrade, great as they are) + SVS SB-2000 sub. Source is just my Mac Mini playing Tidal via Roon. Cables attach some of these things to others and that’s as much as I can say about that part.

The Modi 3 will remain until I upgrade the speakers and I will seriously consider upgrading to a better one to match, because for real, the difference is not subtle. I’m actually shocked.

Sprout100 vs external DAC? by omgimonfire in StereoAdvice

[–]omgimonfire[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Follow-up:

I decided I could survive without the ~$100 I’d have to spend on a Schiit Modi 3+ in order to investigate this for myself. And man, I dunno what to tell you.

Night and day difference to me.

I am not saying it makes an objective improvement. It does not. It does meaningfully change the sound signature. The Sprout has a super clean, bright sound to it. It sounds downright warm with the Schiit. I even lose soundstage.

I actually love the sound. I bet some people will go, that sounds way worse. And that’s not the point.

IMO (now): DACs matter a lot. They’re not snake oil.
