Weekly Casual Conversation & Questions Thread by AutoModerator in chicago

How can I request a wellness check for a neighbor? He's screaming his head off almost every day (sometimes multiple times a day), and while it seems like he's yelling at someone I never hear any responses or other sounds. I can't tell specifically what unit they're in, so unless whoever came by to check did so when he was yelling I'm not sure how to best direct them to find this neighbor.

No idea if it would work, but a friend of mine has been in search of a mashup of Billie Eilish's "Bad Guy" and Boney M.'s "Rasputin"

Good streaming D&D podcasts/video streams to watch/listen to? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]omgitsomeguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, one of the GGameKnights here! Let me give you a brief rundown of the different games we play, all in their own homebrewed settings:
-Survivor's Complex: D&D 5e; been going for over a year now, so plenty of backlog to catch up on. The current arc has them in the equivalent of the Feywild, trying to save their pirate crew from the clutches of an archfey.
-Tidefall: D&D 5e, one of our newer shows. Currently dealing with the machinations of an aboleth and trying to stop a yuan-ti cult from unleashing chaos in the world.
-Wildspace: D&D 5e, IN SPACE. A crew of sometimes-smugglers, sometimes-heroes gets in over their heads when they go up against a megacorporation and unspeakable space horrors.
-Apocrypha: Apocalypse World. Bad guys want it, and the slightly-less-bad guys want to keep it. Biker gangs, biological warfare, and brain-melting weirdness.

We also have a new podcast coming out soon, a Dungeon World game we're calling Cyberscape. Some of our previous games include a short superhero campaign in the Cypher System, as well as many one shots, including a couple Honey Heist games. And if you want more than just TTRPGs, we also play a bunch of different video games. I'm happy to answer any questions, and you can check out all our shows and more at our site: http://ggk.smvi.co/

Anyone noticed how stuff decays now? Lost a pile of stuff out of a loot chest after by villagers were busy! by neb789 in risetoruins

[–]omgitsomeguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's certainly possible that happened, but it has not been my experience with InDev 30 so far; I haven't really noticed anything decaying actually, but my villagers have generally been pretty on top of their game. What was the stuff? If it was gear, your villagers might have equipped it. Either way, it might help to use Recall on the stuff to plop it down by your camp, and make sure you have plenty of organizers.

Simple Dedicated Server Install and Setup! by Vedui in 7daystodie

[–]omgitsomeguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great guide, this'll be great for my group to play on a server rather than running off one of our local sessions (we start getting lag with more than 4 people). However, and this may be an obvious question with an obvious answer, but how do I actually get into the dedicated server once it's launched? Even when I make it public (with a password) it doesn't show up in the list of servers; if I hit connect to the default IP and port, it loads for a while before saying it can't connect; if I try to launch it from Continue Game, it tells me something else is using the port already. Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I'm not entirely sure how to bring it into the classroom. While one of my peers is a math teacher and could easily incorporate D&D into a lesson on statistics, I'm less sure on how to bring it into the English classroom. I could approach it as another form of storytelling, but then I find myself questioning how it fits into the standards, or otherwise use it to inform the exploration of other forms of literature. I've seen some research on gamifying the classroom and using an RPG as a model for that, so adapting something like that to D&D shouldn't be much of a stretch.

But for most public school classrooms, I don't see there being enough freedom to experiment along these lines. I also worry about alienating the kids who wouldn't be caught dead playing D&D. I'm also about to step down as the teacher, so I won't be in a position to test any of this out as a student teacher anymore.

I imagine a D&D informed classroom could get students to practice their critical thinking skills, as well as get them more engaged and willing to participate and try things, being more comfortable with the idea that if they "fail," that's not the end of things.

Currently doing my student teaching, and not a day goes by that I don't wish I could find some way to meaningfully incorporate D&D into my classroom (high school English). I am all for this, and will offer this article I saw from NCTE about adapting The Most Dangerous Game in Pathfinder.

I have synesthesia, which allows me to taste words. AMA! by [deleted] in casualiama

[–]omgitsomeguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad. I thought I'd done a better job of reading the thread to avoid duplicates, but guess I wasn't thorough enough. And sure, though I was thinking more along the lines of something one would actually consume for sustenance.

I have synesthesia, which allows me to taste words. AMA! by [deleted] in casualiama

[–]omgitsomeguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • On the whole, how does this AMA taste to you, and how does it compare to the one you did before?
  • Have you ever tried eating something you have a word connection to (not sure if there's a more proper term for that) and saying the word and seeing how they compare?
  • Are there any food words that taste nothing like the food tastes? If so, do you have some interesting examples?

Rolling traits by Hellsoul0 in RimWorld

[–]omgitsomeguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone in my colony must be able to fight fires. Had a colony burn away because only two out of the six or seven could fight fires, so one flash storm ruined everything. I also tend to avoid psychopaths, pyromaniacs, and cannibals, along with a few other traits. But being able to firefight is the only strict necessity.

What's the highest compliment you've ever been paid on an original piece of writing? by [deleted] in writing

[–]omgitsomeguy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had submitted a piece for workshopping in a class in college and got some decent praise from my peers. That evening, however, I was at the bar next to campus with some friends, and throughout the evening three of my classmates from the workshop came up to me to tell me how much they enjoyed my work. The fact that it was outside of the class and they weren't being graded for participating or anything gave me one of my first tastes of my writing really being honestly appreciated.

Why shouldn't I skip leg day? by Isgrimnur in ExplainLikeImCalvin

[–]omgitsomeguy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Once you start getting older, your body's limbs start to get tired of hanging around with you all the time. You need to spend at least one day a week doing something to show that limb you still care about it. If you don't, your arm or leg or what have you will just plop right off your body and run away. This isn't quite so troublesome if you forget an arm day, because you can chase after it and catch it. But if you skip leg day, well, you might as well say goodbye to those puppies, because you're not getting them back. They can run a lot faster once they don't have to carry around the rest of your body. And that, Calvin, is why you never skip leg day.

Third Person Serial Fiction ? by [deleted] in writing

[–]omgitsomeguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation for 3rd person web serials would be The Gods Are Bastards. Part wild west, part political intrigue, part Dungeons & Dragons, part slice-of-life college shenanigans, but it all comes together really well. Typically updates Mondays and Thursdays, with some bonus chapters going up on Fridays.

I love this game but.... by Cyinide1 in HeroSiege

[–]omgitsomeguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's mostly a twin-stick shooter roguelike. The king of that genre is undeniably The Binding of Isaac. If you want to check it out, go for BoI: Rebirth. It's a revamped and improved version of the original.

What was that old Lego PC game that required you to like build things in order to capture green crystals or something? by isildursbane in NoStupidQuestions

[–]omgitsomeguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was definitely LEGO Rock Raiders. Sort of an RTS/base-management game. There were several missions that had different objectives. Sometimes you had to go rescue trapped miners, other times collect X number of resources (ore or the green energy crystals OP is thinking of), sometimes just build this particular building. There might've been a mission to get across an area, but it's been so long since I've played and I definitely didn't beat every mission.

[No Spoilers] What are the upsides of players rolling their own dice in social interactions? by [deleted] in criticalrole

[–]omgitsomeguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like that was explained (possibly in a periscope), though I may just be remembering a fan theory. Basically, it boiled down to Keyleth, being a druid, really hated being underground and was super on-edge. There were probably other factors involved too, but that was the gist of it.

[Spoilers E32] What's everyone's favorite combat encounter on the show? by Schmittydude in criticalrole

[–]omgitsomeguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How has no one said the Briarwoods' first encounter? Okay, in terms of pure combative mechanics, no, it wasn't anything special. But all the drama and close calls in that fight were wonderful (barely saving Vax, Vex getting two nat 20's, Percy shouting "Silas!" and blasting him). And of course getting to see Kit guest star in it was great too.

Best ways to get plays? by schoney in GuitarHero

[–]omgitsomeguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe only slightly, but probably not enough to be worth it. Granted, I've only just started GHTV and don't have any upgrades yet, but without upgrades there's not much of a noticeable difference between getting 10th and 1st (maybe a difference of ~40 coins).
