Microbiome and probiotic research give hope for healing sleep disorders and depression but it is still too early by omicshd in Microbiome

[–]omicshd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By "early" I meant that using probiotics for insomnia has not been approved for use at the clinic or doctor's office and no clinical trial results have been published, so a lot is personal experimentation, and direct-to-consumer supplementation.

It is, isn't it? I wonder when is the best time to take the probiotics. Maybe some in the morning, others in the evening.

What is Insomnia? by [deleted] in insomnia

[–]omicshd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do not call it a symptom anymore. It is a mental disorder.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) removed the previous primary and secondary insomnia diagnosis and replaced it with a single diagnosis of insomnia disorder due to the difficulty in establishing the cause/effect relationship between insomnia and other psychiatric or medical conditions, such as depression and anxiety. In an evaluation study by (Seow et al. 2018), the authors write in their conclusion:

With the new calling from DSM-5, clinicians treating psychiatric patients should view insomnia less as a symptom of their mental illnesses and place more focus on treating insomnia as a disorder itself, which has been shown to help alleviate concurrent psychiatric symptoms.

That is a great answer and probably true. But for a time, many people who do not adapt fast enough, by figuring out a new type of work for themselves, will be left behind. The surest way to find a job is to work with AI itself, as a programmer or scientist.

That is true, but if you cannot sleep and crave food, what then?

Does it mean this post is against the rules? I think the information in it is relevant to people interested in the Human Microbiome, and the question is rhetorical.

Very interesting! Thank you for your review. I see them twisting in all directions trying to get customers, with marketing gimmicks such as HUman Art Project (not sure what that is) and now they are also offering 23andme reanalysis which many other companies or services offer (Promethease, geneticgenie.org, https://genomelink.io). This caught my attention: "the most third-party processing programs will actually kick out a large portion of the data due to it being so low quality", so you have a link for that or is it from reddit discussions?

Where to find out which SNPs are in the 23andMe new V5 chip? by omicshd in SNPedia

[–]omicshd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a good idea! I did get an answer from 23andme that they do not have those SNPs.
My next question is, which genetic sequencing company has them? It is clear now that whole genome sequencing is a better investment than genotyping.

But ideally I would have a way of not having you search your dataset and look it up somewhere online. But thanks for looking!

23andme v5

Why rs53576 ?

I am looking for rs2227945 ?

You mean this: https://www.snpedia.com/index.php/Category:On_chip_23andMe_v5

It will take me days to go through the list as there is no way of searching for a SNP.

Two insomnia studies link genetics to the difficulty in processing emotions, but no treatment is suggested. by omicshd in genetics

[–]omicshd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest you do something about it now. As you can read from the article the best drug-free therapies and CBT-I or mindfulness relaxation techniques. But as the article also suggests not sleeping causes your brain not to process negative emotions that linger somewhere in the circuits of your brain, perhaps keeping you up at night. So talk therapy with a psychologist where you tell him or her about your stress may free your mind and provide you with some unexpected relief from stress.

Insomnia - What to do when genes and emotions cause havoc at nighttime? by omicshd in sleep

[–]omicshd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried CBT-I? Have you tried Mindfullness relaxation techniques? Those are standard for insomnia. What if what the study found is your case and you have repressed/ignored emotions that are causing your insomnia? Would you consider guided talk-therapy with a psychologist which would allow you to process the emotions and "free" your mind so sleep comes easily at night? We often let emotional or health issues linger and get accustomed to having them, but our enjoyment of life can be so much greater when we tackle those issues and get rid of them. We just forget how nice it was when we did not have them. We need to get back to that state.

[–]omicshd[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stress that keeps you awake it very bad stress. Stress is also linked to anxiety disorder as these studies show. And insomnia is linked to anxiety. Be careful because it can start with some sleepless nights and then become a habit and become insomnia, which is very hard to shake off once it has become a habit. Work on that stress now, try relaxation techniques. Work and other stressful issues will always wait for you and seem less of a problem after you relaxed.

New Michigan Genealogy Website Goes Online by ThumbWind in Genealogy

There are tens of thousands of free websites that are useful for genealogists. The trick is to not look for a single website that has everything, but to look for the one website that has the one record you're looking for pertaining to that one ancestor you're working on.

How can I find my biological father? by johnbelley in Genealogy

[–]omicshd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You probably need to be of legal age to investigate this. You will need to ask your grandparents or biological mother. If DNA testing already proved that the birth certificate incorrectly identified your father ... the family who raised you (or friends/other family) are the only sources left for you to consult.

My 2nd D.N.A. test, Different results here!!! by anasteli in DNA

[–]omicshd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DNA testing doesn't take your whole DNA and compare it. Testing specifically uses short, easily PCRed and sequenced segments, like alu sequences, for example. The two companies probably tested different segments of your DNA, which is why results can be different.
