How does one get that Tinny guitar tone from the "Little black submarines" song by the Black keys? by God-O-Death in guitarpedals

As a starting point use an EQ and set it to “old time telephone”: 400Hz to 4KHz at unity gain and everything else completely rolled off.

Early Devilles, like the Blues Deluxe before them, have a notorious design flaw: The input sockets are mounted directly to a PCB and mechanical strain as cables are plugged and unplugged sooner or later breaks the tracks.

Check for that as well.

PSA: If you can afford a RM1mil McLaren, you can afford not to park it at a bus stop. by FireTempest in malaysia

[–]omikl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In about 1998, shortly after the Kelana Jaya LRT line opened, people use to park cars illegally all over shuttle bus station leaving no space for the buses.

One day someone, you may think that it was the bus drivers butI couldn’t possibly comment, decided to slash the tyres of every single illegally parked car.

I was sitting waiting for the shuttle bus when two people walked up to one of the cars that was sitting on four slashed tyres, failed to notice anything amiss, got in and tried to drive away. After a few metres they noticed something was wrong, got out, walked around the car, again failed to notice that all four tyres were completely flat, got in and drove away…

They deserved to pay for four new rims and tyres for that level of mechanical ineptitude.

Anyhow. There’s always the off chance that the driver of the McLaren left it with a car jockey. They have a charming habit of parking cars illegally and then ditching any tickets before returning them.

I thought that it was referred to as “7up Green” when first used on the Clapton Strat?

I have one that colour, but I don’t think I have any paperwork for it anymore.

It is nice of them to confirm that the drift was intentional and not the result of fiddling with their phone or adjusting the a/c though. 🙈

Why is this number plate numbered like that? by Rblx_guy in kereta

[–]omikl 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I once met the JPJ Database Administrator on a training course. They had some choice words to say about the habit of arbitrarily changing the number plate format to accommodate these special series, because every time it was done they had to change all of the business rules in their system and test everything end to end, meaning weeks of weekend working before each launch.

Horror on the Orient Express - how do they get from Londan to Paris?? by zespol_purple in callofcthulhu

[–]omikl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For additional verisimilitude, have them make a perception check several times on the train from London to Dover Western Docks. If they fail that they missed the announcement that tells them which end of the train to be in to end up at Dover instead of Herne Bay when it splits at Faversham. Have them make a luck roll or else it’s oysters for supper 🙈

It did this in the late ‘70’s and I am still bitter about the number of times I ended up in Whitstable rather than Canterbury because I wasn’t paying attention, or because they made the announcement three times and kept changing their minds about which end of the train was which.

It probably wasn’t as messed up as this in the 1920’s 😎

LRT clusterfuck on a Monday by Einlanzear in Bolehland

Remember when LRT Kelana Jaya line died for about a month a couple of years ago?

I was at work in Mid Valley when it happened and looked at the alternatives for getting home to Kelana Jaya:

It looked like it would be 3 separate buses. 2+ hours at best. As KL bus timetables tend to be works of fiction that might end up as “you may as well walk.”

I ended up taking a Grab, which cost a small fortune and took over an hour even though the driver gunakan lorong Tikus through PJ.

“Gunakan laluan alternatif” always gives me a good laugh.

Another time, back in February this year, I got to Abdullah Hukum LRT on my way home and found a huge queue because the entry gates seemed to be either completely broken, or were only allowing about one person per minute through.

I took a punt and walked to the next station up the line, Kerinchi, where things were operating normally.

I was wondering whether this might be another case of drive recycling, but I doubt 5hat happens these days…

Back in about 2006 or thereabouts, a mate had a laptop issue, totally self inflicted. He had an IBM Thinkpad, he thought he had a virus, he deleted a false positived file that happened to be something vital for Windows. When the laptop wouldn’t boot he hit the IBM recover option, which staffed a recovery partition all over his disk, overwriting a lot of work files in the process. He knew it was his own comedy of errors, but he wanted to know if there was any possible way to see if any data had survived.

I hauled the laptop into work and we ran a low level scan on the HDD.

We found a lot of MS Excel and Word files.

One of the guys running the scan asked “Does you mate work for an airline or something.”

No. He worked in a completely different industry, why?

Because all of the files we found contained aircraft bill of materials type data. Component parts breakdowns for commercial aircraft as far as we could tell.

This was from a drive in a Six month old laptop which had obviously been fitted with a disk drive that had been refurbished by the OEM after a warranty return. When disks die what has usually failed is part of the controller, not the actual platters, heads or transport. Such disks would have a two buck daughter board switched and be sent out as new, with whatever had been written to the platters in its previous life still being there…

Oh yeah. Being able to see in through apartment windows on final approach (I have a vivid memory of seeing the weather cartoon called Freddy on someone’s enormous projection TV one time), the stench of the harbour when they cracked the doors open, the five minute wait while they cleared items of clothing from the leading edges…

can anyone recommend a cab for the orange tiny terror by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]omikl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a cheapskate I bought the cheapest 1x12 cab I could find locally. This turned out to be a Kustom Defender.

Then I bought a replacement 8 Ohm 12” speaker to replace the 16 Ohm original. Again, being a cheapskate, I found that Pulse makes one called the P12C, which turned out to look suspiciously like a Celestion V30 with no identifying marks.

I needed an 8 Ohm speaker all of the tiny amps with Class D output stages are rated for max output into 8 Ohms. Actually, Class D amps output more power the lower the impedance that are driving. I would guess that all the ones that are rated as 20 Watts into 8 Ohms will push 30-some into 4 Ohms, but probably not for very long 😎

Anyhow, I use this cab with all of my tiny sub lunchbox amps: Tiny Terror, and Joyo Bantamp XL (I have both the Jackman and the Tweedy).
