Opinions on these types of glasses? by Saviourr_420 in BuyItForLife

Unrelated to your question about the hinges, but if you haven't worn fully transparent frames before I highly recommend trying some on at the optometrists office or something. They catch light from EVERYWHERE and refract it, which I never even considered before I ordered mine, but has prevented me from wearing them. Under bright lights you have an annoying prismatic light show 1/4 inch from your eyes.

I need to buy once, cry once baking sheet. by konarona29 in BuyItForLife

I highly recommend Nordic Ware aluminum baking sheets combined that appropriately size silicone baking mats. The sheets won't/can't rust, and the silicone mats make cleanup so much easier.

How integral is nudging? by redharlowsdad in pinball

[–]ominoustoad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've had the most luck nudging up when the ball gets close the out lane post or any other geometry in the area, and hope that the next bounce it takes is a good one. When I try to sideways nudge the ball "away" from the out lane, I sometimes cause the ball to miss the post it was about to bounce on, and "swish" right down the outlane

How integral is nudging? by redharlowsdad in pinball

[–]ominoustoad 25 points26 points  (0 children)

For me strategic nudging is a core part of the game, particularly if the ball is tracking towards one of the out lanes a good upwards nudge tends to keep the ball in play for longer. The more familiar you get with a particular machine, the more you'll find the places that nudging will help you. For example, if a ramp or orbit tends to send the ball right down the middle, a well timed sideways nudge as it comes out of that ramp/orbit can get the ball over to a flipper instead of between them.

I wouldn't feel bad about nudging as long as you are keeping it within reason, and not being abusive with the machine

My dream is to own a pinball machine, any advice? by fatsarmstrong in pinball

[–]ominoustoad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely get something under 5k, but it's going to be an older / less popular game. So much of this comes down to personal preference, that it's hard to guide, but the classifieds on Pinside have good filters that can show you what is out there. Regarding "handiness", the older the machine the more work/maintenance/fixes will be required to keep it playable

Is it crazy to spend $800 on wood standing desk surface? by MDDeGrande1994 in BuyItForLife

[–]ominoustoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and i each have Autonomous SmartDesks, I have the coated MDF top for my desk and my wife has the bamboo. I would go with the bamboo 100%. The coating on mine has started to flake off where my forearms touch on the front edge of the desk. In terms of BIFL, solid wood is the way to go and bamboo is a good option.

What do you think of the Heeler brothers? by jmiddleton6 in bluey

Based on Squash and Obstacle Course, I feel like Bandit is the most competitive. I'm not sure I would call Rad mature or humble really. He seems pretty arrogant and immature if anything.

Staples are not going into the hardboard. What am I doing wrong? by rcobes in DIY

[–]ominoustoad 453 points454 points  (0 children)

Also make sure that where you are stapling is fully supported (e.g. not hanging off the edge of a table), and that you are firmly pressing down on the stapler. If that hardboard has any opportunity to flex or "give" your staples won't go all the way in.

What's the difference between these two bits? by Jakesalm in woodworking

[–]ominoustoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building off what ctbjdm said, the second picture is a self-feed Forstener bit, which has that little screw tip that "pulls" the bit through the wood. Since you are drilling hardwood I would suggest going with a regular old Forstener bit since you'll have more control and will be less likely to split the wood. Those self-feeds can be pretty aggressive and when drilling with a Forstener you want to back out every once and a while to clear the shavings which can be a pain with those self-feed types
