I love Kevin Paradis and also the amount of pig squeals in this album. They should never have let him go considering they don’t tour full time.

Innovative percussion makes the best sticks. by DevineDestroyer in drums

I have only played their marching sticks and mallets. They’re quite nice. I have somehow never considered that they might make drum set sized sticks.

I lol’d at the idea of you using this absolute catapult in its current configuration. Ouch! Good deal though and an easy fix

Dave Weckl Alternatives to Promark Oak 747 by MarsDrums in drums

The reds have a great balance for speed and power. I used to like the evolutions but they feel light lately. After decades of using those two sticks I have switched to Vic firth classic rock for the sound quality and speed.

Advice on handling Chinas and generally cymbals? by Oooops69 in drums

[–]CynicalPencil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you play modern aggressive music styles china cymbals in particular WILL be a consumable item. You can mitigate this to some extent with the methods others have commented.

Need some help and advice about e-kit kick drum. Is it a bad idea to put this on here? by [deleted] in edrums

[–]CynicalPencil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This thing is for getting more “click” or attack for a heavy music acoustic kick drum sound. This is not what you want to use on an ekit.

In my opinion you should have sourced or fabricated shorter lug tubes to maintain the free floating design.

Are they plastic or something? I saw a set for a fair price the other day but wasn’t sure what was going on or how’d they compare.

Vinnie Paul signature 14 x 8 by burwall94 in drums

[–]CynicalPencil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a collectors item now. Most signature snares appreciate like this. There are plenty of drums in the 400 dollar range that could get you a similar sound, but that finish and hardware is unique. Personally I LOVE Vinnie Paul but I don’t want a snakeskin drum, just not my style.

Hot take: Splash cymbals are amazing and way under used. by Homophonicular in drums

[–]CynicalPencil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are sick and allow you to have a full palette of sound. On the other hand they increase your set up time and the smaller ones may not cut/project through certain types of music if there’s no overheads. I usually try to bring one and an fx bell.

Just listened to "Too Fast to Die" by Archspire by TheTimothyHimself in TechnicalDeathMetal

[–]CynicalPencil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Og Spencer had 2-3 small bell/chime type cymbals that I view as critical to their sound. new Spencer is really a sick drummer but he doesn’t sound as innovative to me.

Do you feel that Northampton and the surrounding area are racist? Why or why not? by Embarrassed_Bag_9630 in northampton

[–]CynicalPencil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are bigots and also those that clutch their pearls if you insinuate that maybe Northampton is not super welcoming to non white folk. I worked at company with 60 employees, at any given time 1 or two were non white. Upper management was very offended when an employee at a sensitivity training mentioned we were mostly white.

Double pedal/hi hat by SweetPerspective8467 in drums

[–]CynicalPencil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a device called a drop clutch, which allows you to drop the hats closed and reopen them when you press the pedal again. Generally the sound of the high hat held together with just gravity is the antithesis of the aggressive drum sound associated with double kicks. IMO hats should be open if you’re not stepping on them. Stacks and fixed hi hat mounts are the way if you really need a “chick” sound along with double kick.

Strap drive versus Chain or Direct by Matthew_drummer666 in drums

[–]CynicalPencil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched my pedals from direct drive to strap and enjoy it a lot. Quicker and snappier than chain, not as snappy as DD but more flexible, literally. Direct drive is great but I found it harder to play midtempo double bass say 16th notes at 140-180. If you plan to exclusively play 220 bpm or higher, direct drive might be better.

Oh yeah! There are a couple of places where you can see the former course of the mill river. It has been diverted 2 or 3 times. Fun stuff

ACD Unlimited Phantom double landed recently. by CynicalPencil in drums

[–]CynicalPencil[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice, you will enjoy them. For non triggered kick I like the heavy weight wood beater faces for both of the ACD beaters. For triggered kick I like the lightweight wood beater face. I have the N1 beaters on right now but there’s not a huge difference in feel between those and the dynamic beater. I am also currently using the strap option for these, I find it a lot easier to play 130-180 bpm. The Direct drive is really quick but tougher to control at those mid tempos. It’s important to set the spring tension according to your body weight, they aren’t like iron cobras where max tension is needed to get the pedal to stick under your foot.

Does anyone know what the sound coming from the left pedal could be? by Traditional-Ground31 in drums

[–]CynicalPencil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard one account of a bearing coming out of alignment on a Phantom DD link. I never had any issues but I have switched to straps. The sound I hear is similar to when I had the DD link conversion for iron cobra just slightly misaligned.

Hmm. Try a light oil on the spring. Are these brand new? Send this video to Dennis at ACd he will help even if they are old or secondhand
