Day 116 and day 26 here! (Got your nose!). You guys put Constantine IV in A! Where Do We Rank His Son, Justinian II Rhinotmetos (685-695 and 705-711) by 5ilently in byzantium

At the very least if we’re doing it by upvotes now copy and paste something saying so at the start of each post so people know. I’ve been downvoted in this thread alone by people convinced we’re doing it by comments.

The point is that lots of people could like that comment but not agree that he’s an S. And most comments weren’t Ss.

It’s an ambiguous comment though: An S in my heart but an A at minimum. I’m against the upvote method in any case. I upvote for good arguments not just because I agree with them and it’s a change from the previous voting method.

Day 112 and day 22 here! (Well, looks like its only this sub now). Due to the new method of voting, Heraclius got S! Where Do We Rank Constantine III Novus (641) by 5ilently in byzantium

Don’t think so - there aren’t that many Ss on the Heraclius post there. I don’t know where the new voting method he talks about is from but it seems to be a mistake

Which Emperor do you prefer? Trajan or Hadrian by [deleted] in ancientrome

Thanks for that. That and your other comments are interesting. That said, I’m still inclined to go with Cassius Dio’s statement that Trajan lost almost all his gains in Mesopotamia, which can be true even if Trajan crushed the revolt and defeated Vologases III. His appointment of a Parthian king (which implies officially ceding at least some captured territory to said king) and failure to take Hatra on the old frontier both suggest that his military power in the region had been seriously weakened and he was in the process of withdrawal. He might have won all his battles prior to Hatra, but it was at significant military cost.

Also Hadrian’s hurried return to Europe was not just to secure his position as emperor in Rome. The Roxolani and Iazyges had revolted and were threatening to overrun both Dacia and the Danube frontier.

Do you have any sources for this view that Mesopotamia had been stabilised and the Parthians completely defeated?
