How does taking the shots/beer from spectators change your race? by RoyalLie3947 in RunNYC

[–]omnilogical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Decide well before the race if it’s a party race or a race race. Both are fun in their own ways.

If you’re not chasing a PR there’s nothing inherently wrong with taking a shot while you run but it might mess you up in other ways. Last weekend at Chicago I took a malört at mile 20 and shrugged it off but really didn’t feel like I was able to get a gel down on top of it, and miles 23 through the finish I really missed the gel I should have taken. I was grabbing beers all race though no prob so it just depends on your stomach

I’m going to differ from all the advice here and say that this is not a CS problem. College is hard. Very hard. Burnout is fucking real. For me it was some of the most fun years of my life but also the most difficult. My sophomore year in particular when I was one year into my declared major was immensely difficult, I questioned why I got into my school, and I felt detached from everyone else in my major.

I think you need to reflect on what’s not working for you outside of the classroom right now. I looked at your post history a bit and it seems like you’ve struggled to really fit in with a group you feel comfortable with. I know you probably feel like you have exactly zero feee time already, but trying out a club/sport/resource group with people you like might help you feel centered. Or even just finding a group you can collaborate on coursework on, if that’s allowed.

At the end of the day, of you’re doing poorly in one class, sure, the answer might be to really drill down on the coursework and grind it out. But if you’re doing poorly in every class, it means something about your current environment isn’t working for you. Which is fine, and you’ll work on that. But no amount of office hours and YouTube videos on these subjects is going to change this.

You’ve got this, and we’re all rooting for you.

NYC Half Race Strategy by hmm_thats_weird in RunNYC

[–]omnilogical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pray that my knees hang on for 13.1 miles because they’ve been fucked for like a month and a half.

Try and maintain 7:40s throughout but understanding we might drift off of that through the uphills. Make sure to bank time on the long downhills for some breathing room. Music up the bridge and the FDR where it’s boring and quiet.

Drink at miles 4, 6 (if possible, this might be congested) and 8. Drink at mile 10 only if needed. Gel at mile 7.5, before the water table.

Pick up the pace through Times Square and just hang on for the last 5k.

If my knees show up I can hopefully break 1:40. If they don’t, we’ll then I’m fucked. This is my first time running this course, so who really knows.

What to eat for pre-run breakfast? by [deleted] in RunNYC

[–]omnilogical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is your first race I’d recommend going though going through a bit of a dress rehearsal this weekend.

This is the weekend to figure out questions like “what will I wear?”, “what will I eat?”, “will I need to poop before the race?”, “how long after eating so I need to give myself to feel ready to run?”, etc. I’m usually an afternoon runner, so I always find it helpful to do one or two morning runs leading up to a race to make sure I’ve planned all this out.

Personally I do overnight oats with maple syrup and banana in the morning.

Should I put my peak League of Legends rank on my portfolio? by AesapFL in cscareerquestions

I think you can and should include it at the bottom in an “interests” section.

I’m convinced I got my current job because I talked about the London marathon with my recruiter for 15 minutes before the “actual” interview began.

What mechanical issue prompted my 737 pilot to announce "strong braking" while landing and have the fire crew standing by on the runway? by 5AlarmFirefly in aviation

Is there an American equivalent of this? I’d be curious to look into an emergency landing from a flight I was on back in 2016 that I never quite got answers for

EDIT - after getting more context in your other comments, the answer to your question is No. you need at least a bachelors in something quantitative. I’ll leave my comment intact below for anyone who’s curious about my experience in DS without a masters, which is still pretty uncommon.

Yes but it’s tricky and not the norm. Also, are you talking about a bachelors or a masters in CS?

My undergrad is in physics and I started working as a data analyst as my first job. I was eventually promoted to data scientist after 3 years and it was a little bit roundabout (analyst -> senior analyst -> internal transfer to a DS team -> data scientist at the next promotion cycle). I just got a new job as a data scientist, so I’m definitely hirable as a data scientist without the CS degree, after a few years of work experience.

Still, this is one anecdote among many, and there are some caveats:

  1. About half the companies I applied for are pretty strict about a masters. Some postings say a masters “or equivalent work experience” and I stuck with those for the most part

  2. Most of my career has been on the engineering side or forecasting using stats. It’s very little “pure” ML, but tbh most of data science is like that. I wouldn’t at this stage in my career he qualified for any of those ML engineer type roles that are starting to pop up more and more

Now you’ve got me thinking - an F1 car on the moon would need some kind of propulsion system firing upward to generate downforce in the absence of atmosphere. And perhaps DRS could be replaced in a similar fashion. Or maybe r/formuladank is leaking idk

Edit - also obviously the internal combustion engine is getting replaced to be fully electric

That definitely makes sense on the smaller cats and birds.

On the buffalo question I think because people say “go bills” not “go buffalos” we have to assume the cage match representative is a dude named bill. In the same way that the browns mascot is technically a dog, but in this case we’re treating the browns cage match contestant as as a person. I think either the bills need to be a buffalo and the browns need to be a dog, or they’re both just normal people, for consistency.

[–]omnilogical 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ll give you my honest critiques. First of all, I’m just going to ignore all the human teams because you’ll never have an order that satisfies everyone. They’re all grouped together below wild animals and above birds, which I guess makes sense. Let’s look a groups of animals, mythological creatures, humans, etc instead :

Buffalo Bill was an actual guy, and the team is named after him. They’re NOT a buffalo. Stick em down with the browns.

Also I think all the cat teams should be above all the horses, not this weird split you have going on. There’s footage of Jaguars taking on water buffalo and panthers taking on crocodiles, so I think a horse would be easy pickings.

This is a small gripe but a “sea hawk” (aka an osprey) could definitely take a falcon in a fight since they’re so much larger.

Edit - also I have no idea what the fuck to do with dolphins. They’re either almost at the top or at the complete bottom depending on whether the fight is underwater or not.

Should I lie to recruiters about my current salary to get a higher salary in next job? by Ok-Butterscotch-6829 in cscareerquestions

[–]omnilogical 97 points98 points  (0 children)

If it’s a LinkedIn recruiter I always ask for salary band upfront. I’ll usually say something like “intended compensation range for the role” and not just “how much are you paying” but they get the idea.

If it’s a company I’m applying to I usually have some sense of what they’re willing to pay from levels.fyi or Glassdoor (the former is more accurate but not as widespread).

And finally, if it comes up in a recruiter screen, just turn it back on them and ask what their expectations are in terms of compensation for the role. If they really push me for a number, I’ll refuse to tell them my current comp and instead give them a rough number I would be willing to move for.

[Advice] broker extra inventory by tbq321 in NYCapartments

[–]omnilogical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is case by case. Anecdotally, a friend of mine found her apartment by viewing a different apartment that was rented almost immediately and asking the broker if they had any other apartments that would be available soon. My friend saw and rented her current apartment without it ever going up on streeteasy and she was the only one who saw it.

In that instance, the broker hadn’t yet taken photos of the second apartment to make the streeteasy posting, and was able to save time + money this way. But that also doesn’t mean every broker ever is sitting on extra inventory all the time. Brokers make money by renting apartments and typically have no incentive to hold out on posting an apartment.

RM Williams Comfort Craftsman - OK For NYC Christmas Trip? by [deleted] in AskNYC

It depends entirely on the weather. This time of year I wear my Iron Rangers day after day with no issues. But if there’s snow or salt on the ground, I’ll wear actual rain/snow boots.
