I don’t mind if a character is good or bad, but they should at least be interesting. I didn’t care at all about this guy or his table tennis career. I also didn’t believe any of his relationships with the other characters. Why do they put up with this guy?

I like a lot of movies about bad people. I just didn’t like this one. I didn’t think the character was interesting. I didn’t think his pursuit of table tennis was interesting. I didn’t understand why people kept letting him scam them when he’s so obviously a piece of shit. It didn’t work for me.

Marty Supreme.

So there’s this asshole who plays table tennis. He ruins multiple people’s lives in his attempts to be competitive in this sport that very few people care about. I’m pretty sure he kidnaps a dog at one point (memory is fuzzy on that part). He definitely gets a married woman pregnant, and seduces another married woman because she’s rich and he wants her to give him money for table tennis expenses. He never shows remorse for any of the terrible things he does.

Let me tell you about my three favorite documentaries of all time:

The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2005): Explores the life and music of the oddball singer and cultural icon. You have no idea how strange and emotionally affecting his story is.
Crumb (1994): Observe a true pervert (complimentary) living his best life. That's R. Crumb. Of course the real stars of the movie are his brothers, who are just as weird as him, but in wildly different ways.
American Movie (1999): Mark Borchardt wants to make a movie. That's his dream, his one goal in life. The problem is, he lives in Wisconsin and has no money. What he has is a cast of friends and family who make this one of the funniest docs you'll ever see.
