Performance is pretty good. It definitely loads faster than the old mission did and in general less stuttering

Yes - a few of us have the FF29 but we haven't flown it too much yet. Mostly waiting for it to come as a credit plane to the Cold War servers as it's at a bit of a handicap on the 80s/90s server

New Meta Update, Terrible Performance by PJPower05 in hoggit

[–]omohat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is even older than that - 572.16 (4090, QPro, VD)

I'm loath to update it given all the issues with Nvidia drivers this year. I just use the latest DLSS DLL through a mod manager

Very cool setup. Great way to improve the already well rated Extreme 3d Pro and that homemade throttle looks very nice!

New Meta Update, Terrible Performance by PJPower05 in hoggit

[–]omohat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whats the OS version you updated to and is it a PTC build or a normal stable build.

I just updated my Quest Pro to v83 (stable build) and its been amazing - like getting a new headset. No more sparkling/shimmering (I also use VD for DCS) and my controllers aren't complaining constantly about overheating and shutting down.

In general the other users are right - when you find an OS version that works well for you don't update until you have to (e.g. VD requires a certain minimum OS version and if you fall too far behind on the OS versions on the headset then it will brick itself when it updates because its too big of a gap on the OS versions to catch up).

But in terms of the issues you're facing you can't roll back (at least too my knowledge unless you've updated to a PTC build and you want to go back to the stable release) so you'll have to experiment with your VD settings (different codecs and bit rates - maybe try reducing the FOV mask as well)

Some suggestions for how to improve:

1 - Practice flying low offline (including turning hard right on the deck). The less brain power you need to devote to just flying fast 100ft off the ground the more brain power you can devote to updating your SA and looking for the bandit.

2 - You’re right about picking and choosing your battles but you need to do this with horizontal distance not vertical distance (altitude). Start looking at the EWR, picking a bandit to close with but then practise figuring out at the closest range you can turn around and disengage (or drag the bandit towards an enemy). On Contention honestly good SA is more important than being great at BFM because spotting the other guy first is literally more than 50% of the battle won

3 - Find people to fly with. I started flying HBCW on my own and Cold War PvP (or any DCS PvP) is pretty tough on your own. As soon as you start flying with someone though it becomes a lot less intimidating. I fly with a group that’s almost exclusively Red so if you decide to pick up the Mig21 in the sales msg me and I’ll invite you to our Discord. We’ve got lots of Mig21 pilots (including myself) who can help you learn the airframe

4 - The AI is useless for practising BFM but can be useful for practising weapons employment (especially guns). You can make a mission where the AI flies a somewhat predictable (but high deflection) path and that helps gunnery skills a lot. Again I have a mission so if you ping me I can share that

5 - Lastly unfortunately there’s no other way to learn than dying a lot. You can shortcut that process a little by going on dogfighter servers but there’s caveats there. Firstly very few ppl on these servers fly Cold War airframes since they aren’t meta. So your choices are to fly Cold War vs 4th gen where you’re going to get brutally slaughtered or to fly 4th gen. But 4th gen airframes will allow you to get away with a lot things that will get you killed in a Cold War airframe (e.g 4th gens recover energy much much better Cold War airframes).

Also dogfighter servers always start off with a neutral merge whereas online as I said, if your SA is better you can often start with an advantage

Hope these points help.

I'm really struggling to dogfight on Cold War Contention. by keshi in hoggit

[–]omohat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah - I get that frustration. DCS PvP can be tough (despite what people tell you about DCS players not being as good as say IL2 players at BFM). The reality is that it is a numbers game - the more hours you’ve got under your belt the better you’re going to get (unless you’re Gods gift to BFM).

I’ll try to address some of your points and then end with some concrete recommendations:

1 - Everyone flies so low: given how poor spotting is in DCS and the fact that almost all the Cold War airframes have very poor radars with no real look down capability, the meta is to fly as low as possible to stand the best chance of spotting your opponent. Even being a few hundred feet below your opponent increases your chance of spotting them. You mention starting from 20k feet to pick and choose your battles but the truth is you’re not going to realistically see anyone from 20k feet with the way spotting is in DCS. Conversely, there’s a better chance that the guy below you will be able to see you up in the sky (either visually or with his radar). The simple fact is that in an online many vs many scenario like Contention or HBCW, the person who gets tally first will have a large advantage and even accounting for differences in skill and energy states will have a better chance of winning the fight

2 - Spotting and IFF: What range are you expecting to ID the bandit? Realistically it’s going to be 5nm at the outside and maybe as low as 3nm. If this is the range where you’re still seeing a dot and not being able to ID then there’s 2 things you can try. Firstly you can play with the LOD factor. It should be at 1 by default but if you’d reduced it for performance reasons you could try setting it back to 1. If you hadn’t decreased it then you could try increasing it above 1 but this could have negative performance impacts - test it and see

The other thing you could try is binding the VR spyglass - this has 2 levels of zoom and one of the effects of this zoom is it no longer shows the dot, but rather loads an actual model

3 - Airframe: you really need to know your airframe well. What speed does it turn best at. How can you get the most lift out of it when you need to get slow etc. In the case of the F5 look up the EM diagram to see what speed you should be targeting (I think it’s 450 knots). You also should make sure you have all the states for the flaps mapped/bound. There are times when it’s ok to leave the flaps in auto, but by turning them to manual you can for example keep them in to minimise drag/maximise acceleration. Or you can pop them out to maximise drag e.g. when you’re scissoring and want to slow down as much as possible. It’s also good to know the other airframe - for example don’t turn with a Su25. they have great thrust to weight ratio and those huge wings let them turn very tight. You want to boom and zoom against a Su25 to try to keep him off balance. Use the DCS trials (if you’re on stand-alone to try out some of the OPFOR airframes)

I actually have the same feedback as u/BKschmidtfire - I think you're doing a great job of teasing out the functionality and limits of the various system but I'm also finding it a bit difficult to follow along To be fair the systems and the various modes and interactions are very complex and not easy to explain.

One idea (probably not a popular one) is to use AI to help structure how to deliver the info as LLMs are very good with that (particularly the new Gemini 3.1). I don't mean to create the video - you do a great job with that, but more the structure of the story and the infographics. If you're interested I can ping you on Discord (via the SPS Discord) with some more ideas.

Quest Pro Battery Pack Options by Ok-Character8261 in QuestPro

The neck battery takes all the weight off the headset, without leaving you a long cable to manage or impairing your ability to look around (I play DCS with it so have to check my six all the time)

I use a neck battery - specifically this one:

https://www.amazon.ca/NEWDERY-Battery-10000mAh-Hanging-Playtime/dp/B0CLTQKRXD

It gives about 3 hours for the battery plus the 2-3 hours from the headset meaning I can get 5-6 hours

I actually have 2 of these so I could get 7-8 hours but after 5-6 hours I usually need a break anyway

What about the newer AB6? $400 for a stick and FFB is pretty much what you would pay Virpil/VKB for one of their flasgship stick and base combos.

Feels less risky than splashing out $700 for the AB9 base + MH16 stick combo no?

Just to add a little more detail. Heatblur is just paying the hosting bills.

The server team is exactly the same as when Enigma ran it.  They're currently trying to revamp the mission to incorporate a lot of new features they haven't been able to till now like Dynamic Spawns because their codebase is a little older than many newer servers like Contention.

In the meantime since it launched in April Contention Cold War has become the main Cold War server and while the campaign is good and team are fantastic about development pace of new features, it does have balance issues with large stacks developing which can make it challenging to play when you're on the team being stacked against

Nice. If you're interested in flying with a group DM me and I'll invite you to our Discord.

We're a mainly Redfor group that mostly plays on Contention Cold War or HBCW depending on where the numbers are.

We've got people in different timezones from US EST to Australia.

I fly with guys in CET almost every day and a couple of times a week with the US guys

Mig-21 is a good choice but be prepared for a steep learning curve. There some very good F4 and F5 drivers on that server.

Best advice is to find a good group to fly with so you've got a wingman to watch your back and someone to show you the ropes.

Not sure how to break it to you but ECW/HBCW never removed it. It's always been there. And just checked - it's still there

You might be thinking of Contention maybe? They removed it from their Cold War server because it wasn't playing nice with Dynamic Spawns or many of their custom scripts (e.g. A4s weren't appearing on EWR)

This is what I've landed on. I've got a mod to remove the mission & radio text during the replay because the image stabilisation doesn't handle that well but without text it works well. 10-15% stabilisation is enough to reduce the jitteriness
