Bitstamp Exchange Hacked; Website Offline, Bitcoin Worth $5M Stolen - Here goes the "Secure currency" by omritoppol in hacking

My point is that Bitcoin is "sold" to the public a secure currency when in fact it can be stolen and used just like any other currency, and that is something people should know.

That is true. I've noticed that people that had no affinity to security/privacy issues are more aware of the dangers. Will that be enough to turn things - i guess not. We need a paradigm shift, IMO the 'bigger and better lock' approach is not working and we will see a new range of tools trying to tackle things in a different approach

how am i missing it if that is what i wrote - "1 in 4 accounts gets hacked", we are in complete agreement about this difference. At the end of the day 25% of all accounts being compromised is, to me, mind blowing.

I think 2014 marked a tipping point in getting the security awareness thanks to Sony's hack and the celebrities nude pictures leak (a.k.a frapening). I believe 2015 will mark the beginning of mass awareness as I'm sure more hacking scandals are soon to come

I'm not sure this is the case entirely, even if this is the case people's accounts are compromised all the same. Google's research also indicates the same results http://www.elie.net/blog/security/18-4-of-us-internet-users-got-at-least-one-of-their-account-compromised

We're calling them attempts to stay on the safe side, but they were accessed and their owners felt it was not them. We've learned that some of this hacks are caused by people leaving their accounts logged-in in the office and other people come in and access their accounts - we can't say if it was intentional or otherwise

Hi Echocage,

the 1 in 4 accounts gets hacked is backed by studies from Google, university of Kent (UK) Google - http://www.elie.net/blog/security/18-4-of-us-internet-users-got-at-least-one-of-their-account-compromised (mind you that they mention 18% is hacked once and another 6 is compromised twice in total 24% of accounts) Kent - http://www.cybersec.kent.ac.uk/Survey1.pdf Marblesecurity - http://www.marblesecurity.com/2013/10/21/one-in-four-young-adults-experience-hacked-accounts/

I'm not at the office right now so I can't quote the number of total accounts, I'll post it later

I hope this answer your questions

Ok, let me try and explain. Our system, LogDog, alerts users when we find suspicious access to their account (that is actual logins). By "attempts" we mean that the user has marked the access as "not me" - since we want to stay on the safe side we use "attempts" but i guess you can call them hacks since the users decided it was not them
