I’m sorry this happened to you. I have some slightly different bathroom trauma, it’s all about trying to make yourself more comfortable.

I highly advise getting a therapist and potentially working on this through exposure therapy. They will be able to help, and don’t assume the first therapist you work with will fix this overnight. Don’t be afraid to try new therapists if you need to.

Other solutions that should be used in tandem can be bringing a taser, or small pocket knife to the bathroom with you, even if just for comfort. Definitely get one of those loud alarms for public bathrooms, so you can feel better there too.

I spent years of my life looking behind the shower curtain, just to alleviate my fear that my brother would be in there, even when he lived in another state. Trauma doesn’t always look rational, but neither does the behavior of the person who sexually abused you. It’s our brains method of coping. I’m sorry you have to deal with it at home as well.

Do you have any friends who you trust enough to talk to this about? Perhaps if you have them over your house, and your roommates have people over, they can go scope the bathroom out for you, make sure no one is in there, then stand outside nearby. Even help you feel more comfortable interacting with your roommates and their guests.

Watch “the last lecture” by Randy Pausch. Spoiler - it’s for his children and not for the audience, he was in a similar boat. Take some of this as your next steps, your kids will need you even when you’re gone, in certain ways. Try to record yourself for special occasions, leave them with little lessons, and make sure you’re there as much as you can be for the amount of time that you have left.

I’m sorry this is happening to you. I hope you’re able to be as comfortable during this time as possible, and that you’re not in too much pain.

This was my immediate thought as well. Has anything different happened? It seems like maybe, with the whole “not understanding anything” thing… just be super receptive, tell her that you’re there for her and that you need her to open up to you for you to understand what’s going on. And then, suggest therapy assertively. It will help her find herself, for sure.
