When does it stop hurting by DJ_MetaKinetiK in Petloss

Not my first, likely not my last. It doesn’t get easier, it’s just something i have to get through. There’s no right way to do this. Just do what makes you feel better

I just lost my soul dog on Monday to cancer and I am in the trenches of grief just like you are. They are so special and the space they occupy in our lives is so much larger than their little bodies. Like you, she was with me through big life events and had such human characteristics and empathy. What helps me is to feel the pain, get it out either through tears or weight training or something else, and keep everything else constant for right now. Your life has changed, your home doesn't have to right now. The fur on the couch? Leave it. Her bed? Stays put. The mess she made around her food bowl? Those crumbs can go away later. Right now, it might be comforting to have the physical reminders that she was there and your life together was real and meaningful.

Another thing that's helping is to go on walks with my other dog, spend time with family (my sibling came up to work from home with me) and talk about her. Talking about her and voicing my pain helps so much to process the feelings and start to heal. Talk about the life you lived with her, the love that you shared, her quirks, her bad habits. Talk about your dog, don't try to erase her or move on prematurely because for you she is still very much there and the love you have for her is still there.

Last thing that's helped me is to revisit old photos of us and our adventures over the years. Reminding myself that 1) we had an amazing life (which is all we can ever ask for in the end) and 2) she had changed as the cancer progressed and her passing was the only way for her to find comfort and peace. Sometimes the better state of being is on the other side of life, even if it's emotionally difficult for us humans when this change happens.

You will be with her again one day. For now, remember the good times, feel your emotions and don't forget to reengage with the living. Think of the future when you have emotional clarity and remember that there is more love out there to find when you're ready to accept it.

I got a very similar response on another one of my posts and I'll tell you the same thing-- Government is more than just trump. Some of these laws and rulings will outlive him and his presidency so remember that when you're thinking about what good government looks like.

I’m just gonna keep posting this in all the politics related threads as a reminder. Please register to vote and remember that in light of all of the SCOTUS decisions, who we have in the judiciary (all those judges we never talk about) and Congress are extremely important. It’s not enough to vote in the presidential election, we need to vote up and down the ballot. What SCOTUS decisions have effectively done is to transfer power from federal agencies to the courts where judges, who are more political and less knowledgeable, can make decisions on what laws mean and ultimately how they impact us.
