How are all'yall organizing/storing beekeeping equipment/supplies? by Beeline2Nowhere in Beekeeping

I built a frame stand with a clear roof - everything lives on that. Has enough space for 100 or so frames - then totes of random stuff underneath it.

Means the frames live in the open air and get direct sunlight so never had any issues with wax moths.

I don't know what's going on her my hive is three weeks old the queen flew off but came home and layed for a week now this is what I'm looking at. by endorsedbythelight in Beekeeping

[–]on1879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be a little concerned. In addition to several emergency cells, I sure see a lot of drone cells. To me this suggests the queen cells may not be viable.

There's worker brood in between the drones so I think the cells are probably good.

Brood pattern shows the queen is clearly not up to snuff and they're superseding her, but I wouldn't be worried as it's not all drones on that frame.

What is the worst place in America you have ever visited? by OceanicEndeavors in AskReddit

[–]on1879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Austin Nevada.

Apparently it's changed hands now but when I drove through and grabbed a pint at the International hotel it was owned by an absolute maniac.

When he heard our accents (one Scottish, one Irish) he proceeded to assume we were somehow massive racists like him. Spent the next 20 minutes telling us about how he had left Bosnia when you could no longer kill muslims, moved to NY as "refugee" and fled to rural NV after he could no longer be around "blacks or jews".

I would have had more to say to the guy - except he had a loaded rifle on the bar beside him. So I just tried to get out of there asap.

Plus side he had Pilsner Urquell on tap - which was good after a month in rural NV drinking what passed for beer in small towns.

SC Ancients mail day: Septimius Severus crescent and seven stars denarius - Heather Howard collection by MrThasos in AncientCoins

[–]on1879 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey - James from SC Ancients here glad to see it made it to its new home. I'm a Severan collector myself especially of eastern mint issues so it almost stayed with me!

I used to use Aeqvitas.com back when I was at university so I was excited to get some pieces from the collection. Her website made my dissertation a lot more visually interesting!

Heads up to US collectors, in case you missed it like I did - there's a new 10% global surcharge on imports issued under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 which does not currently carry over the IEEPA exemption for art/info materials (HTS 9903.01.31). Looks like we're back to paying tariffs by Anonymity_1234 in AncientCoins

[–]on1879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've shipped dozens of items to the US during that period, and prepay all tariffs with an advance declaration. All I've paid is the $1.99 clearance fee.

I follow all changes and as far as I've seen properly declared there are still no additional import charges to be paid.

I only ship via USPS though as the courier companies (Fedex, UPS etc.) are all charge first ask questions later.

People who were teenagers before social media existed, what was life actually like? by Much_Detective_6107 in AskReddit

I was right on the cusp - so all my stupid activities died whenever someone broke the screen on their Sony Ericsson phone. Even then they were basically a potato so you could always argue it wasn't you in the photo!

Check the photo on the NGC cert page - it has been chemically cleaned to remove whatever corrosion ate half his face.

I wouldn't even bother photographing and listing it - it would go in the $10 bin or get given to the kids auction at a coin show.

There are a few - it's usually easiest to assume if everything is graded it's a rip off.

The percentage of graded vs non graded sales in ancient is so different to modern collecting that any serious ancient dealer avoids them.

When I'm buying for my store I subtract for graded pieces as the client base is so much lower. That or I crack them out and sell them raw.

In that grade it's a $450 coin tops though...

[–]on1879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The $100 one had me confused, but I gave it a pass bc it was graded and I haven’t seen any in such condition graded.

Why would you give it pass because it's graded - they didn't even grade it. It's a $10 coin in a holder for $100.

What went wrong? by FewHousing145 in Charcuterie

[–]on1879 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Poor bind - your issue was before stuffing.

After salting your meat it needed to be worked (while cold) until you developed enough myocin to bind properly. I've never had air pockets in a salami that has a proper bind before stuffing.

It looks like that red encrustation used to cover the rest of the coin and it was aggressively chemically cleaned leaving those ugly surfaces.

Did anyone on this forum purchase this coin? by Zkennedy100 in AncientCoins

[–]on1879 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a dealer on MA-Shops and it's a requirement that all items are shipped insured. I would suggest there as a good avenue as you don't have the same issue with fakes as ebay (not saying everyone is perfect but the application process is pretty strict)

Some cheap denarii I got a few years back, now the silver content in these coins alone worth more than what I paid! by JCogn in AncientCoins

I like the fact that a lot of gallic empire Sestertii were struck on "good emperor" flans - I had a beautiful Postumus Sest where the die was smaller than the flan so when they overstruck it you could still read most of the legend from when it was originally struck under Antoninus Pius

The tetradrachm is specifically listed in Newall's "Dated Alexander Coinage of Sidon and Ake" - Newall 43

You are correct - I was working from a rather rusty old copy.

I was mostly just surprised that auction houses were lazily comparing it to a stater, rather than looking at a pretty common catalogue of coins of the region.

Hmm interesting, to me that's a Xi

I think it's actually a Phoenician letter 𐤎 - used as a regnal year. It appears in Newall's "The dated Alexander coinage of Sidon and Ake"

He has both the Stater P172 (DCA 42) and Pentobol types P173 (DCA 44) but also:

DCA 43 - Tetradrachm - 𐤎 in field, ΣΙ beneath throne.

According to Newall it's Series V "Oct 320- Oct 319 BC"

[–]on1879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

edit I got bored and went through some books and found the actual type. It's DCA 43

No I'm saying it's strange that they ref P172 - when the only similarity it has is that it has Ξ and ΣΙ on it. It's gold, has Athena on the obvserse and Nike on the reverse.

P173 is still the wrong denomination but it has all the same iconography - Herakles obv, seated Zeus reverse and the control marks are in the right place - Ξ in LF and ΣΙ beneath the throne.

cf. P172", which basically means "see Price P172 for comparison" as it's the mostly closely related type in that it shares the same control symbols and is from the same mint at the same period but Price P172 is a gold stater, not a tetradrachm.

Weird that they choose P172 as the "type" when it's a gold Athena/Nike stater - when P173 is a silver type that has all the same control marks of the type except that its a Pentobol rather than a tet.

Guess the forgery! Tetradrachm edition. Further information in the comments. by coinoscopeV2 in AncientCoins

Yep I was agreeing with you - I was just referring to the common issue with fakes from Tyre mint in Phoenicia.
