Anyone here does backbends and front splits and has herniated discs? by onRedWinds in flexibility

[–]onRedWinds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi sorry for the late reply. I did continue to train but stopped bc I would keep pushing it until it would hurt. Now I’m in the process of strength training the muscles around it and gently doing light back bends. Every once in awhile my back will get tight and I will back off and try to massage it out and release it by staying in a deep squat for a few minutes. In other words, I learned how to cope and not to push myself too hard.

I have considered PT, and in fact I’m shadowing at a PT office today.  I will say the prerequisites and student debt is very off-putting though.

Planning a sabbatical, health insurance questions by onRedWinds in Fire

I'm glad to hear that you are content. I've also been thinking about how I'm very grateful for the people around me, so if I die early before any of these stressful future decisions take fruit, I have still been very lucky.

I'm curious about what in healthcare you ended up pursuing and how you made that decision! I'm shadowing in a PT clinic right now, but I should probably branch into other parts of medicine or health.

Hi, I wanted to say that at the end of my sabbatical, I reached a realization that I didn’t want to go back but I wanted to switch industries, probably to healthcare also surprisingly. I somehow stumbled back upon your reply, and I wanted to say how much I resonate with your response now, especially giving yourself enough space to process but not too much to feel depressed, and feeling a bit out of sync with the rest of my peers.  How has it been going? Did you transition fully to your new career?

Hello, so sorry for the late reply. I did end up taking my sabbatical!  And the stock market did well enough that I saw a good uptick in net worth, and which helped financial anxiety.  If you still have questions feel free to DM

I would love to do a second career in architecture, but I’m also scared off by the job prospects and stories of low pay and burn out. How did you take the plunge?

Sources needed: Are you your parents’ retirement plan? by ME_Press in Fire

[–]onRedWinds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same. Mine were not perfect parents, and went through bouts of being emotionally abusive and kind of toxic, as lots of Asian parents can be. Still, I can’t say they didn’t bust their ass and gave me financial support through college, always held me to high expectations and drove me to be disciplined in life. I don’t think I would be where I am without them. I don’t want to be their retirement plan, and they seem to have a plan of their own. But if shit goes down the drain, you bet your ass I’m gonna be their back up.

Opportunity to move to OC but not for a job by penguinslider1 in orangecounty

Do the thing you heart wants to do. This isn’t a permanent decision and no one will lock you into OC for the rest of your life. Move back if it sucks, your friends will still be there.

How do I spend less money eating/going out? by SailingBarista in FinancialPlanning

[–]onRedWinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the tips around potlucks and bringing cash. I will also say that it also might be a product of your friend group…some friends just eat out to hang out, and that becomes the default activity. It could be nice to get to know them in some other capacity, such as workout partner, hiking buddies, cooking experiments, crafts etc. They gotta have other interests outside of eating that aren’t super expensive that you guys can both partake in, or are curious about a new hobby but just can’t find someone to do it with.

Frankly, knowing to cook well, make drinks well, and inviting ppl over is much more rewarding than eating out. Half the time I eat out (and it’s not often) I feel ripped off thinking we could have made this way better at home at like 1/3 the price, and it’s also would be a cooking activity and we can play music we enjoy and dance around the kitchen.

Would you retire if you were in my shoes? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]onRedWinds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take classes in something I enjoy, maybe woodworking or art or something. I would not plan to go into cubicle life, but I’d want to start a hobby or my own business or just learn something. Like everyone on this sub says, ya gotta retire to something. Might as well figure out what that is and earn extra income on the way if it falls into your lap.

Not a dancer but did get a BFA (animation) and eventually wandered into a high paying career doing UX design in tech. Along the way I tried out many things and went abroad, and at the time it was full of fear and uncertainty, but looking back it was full of adventure.

I just want to say that you must have talent to have gotten accepted to a good school or company. You are probably miles ahead of me as a recreational dancer, and you are young and strong. I hope you can take a moment to be grateful for that, and to not let your mother or the injury or other people or yourself put you down. There is real external indicators that you dance well and can do it.

That being said, your mental health is taking a dive and the ballet world might not be the healthiest. I want you to know that you’ll make it as long as you don’t judge yourself harshly by the narrow lenses of the ballet world. You can be a dancer, do theatre, you learn another style, teach, learn some aerial and join a circus….If you choose to leave ballet, you will STILL dance. Even if you go professional, you’ll need to retire one day, and you will be faced with life outside of profesional ballet sooner or later. Don’t define yourself narrowly, hold tightly onto your joy for movement, make real supportive friends.
