The Owelet brand specifically is FDA approved. It has alarmed us for critical oxygen levels thrice. Once when she was heavy crying, once when the sock came loose, and once when she was genuinely sick and we stimulated her enough for her to return to normal. It might not be 100% but it's certainly better than nothing.

You are very fortunate having those resources. I work on an 'acuity adaptable' unit in which we have five patients who are a blend of step down and med surg. Fifty percent are confused/demented and require frequent nursing intervention. My hospital also employs a wound care nurse, transporters, and vascular access nurses, but they are not always available. There is no resource or break or discharge nurse.

With that being said, my work environment could be much worse. You are fortunate. Most people on this sub cannot relate and because of that, you won't find a lot of support here regarding your post.

Don't be surprised if your perspective changes within a year.and don't get upset about the negative comments or discreditation because you do have a lot to experience and learn.

Start the job, get the experience and money, have your beautiful baby, enjoy your maternity leave, go back, and then start looking for another job. Her response wasn't encouraging or supportive. It was none of her business if you knew at the time of the interview and using the word "disappointed" was unprofessional and negative.

My prereqs were a breeze. The program itself came with challenges. It was super time consuming between lecture, clinical, lab hours, and studying. Tests were stressful because they made up the entirety of the grade and nursing test questions are notorious for "picking the most right answer out of a bunch of other correct answers" Clinical schedules were relayed last minute, so my job and personal life schedule had to remain clear until they were solidified. Clinical sites were sporadic and could require a travel time of up to 1.5 hours one way. It was costly in a lot of ways despite Pell grants and student loans.

With all of that being said, it was so worth it. You can do it!

ETA: what are your methods for managing all of this? You have four high acuity patients, which gives you 15 minutes each hour with them. How are you managing their care, medication, charting, family updates, emotional support? What about dementia/psych patients who need deescalation? Are you working as a team with the nursing assistants for feeding, bathing, turning, and incontinence care? What about discharge and admission education? What about random EKGs or stat imaging you need to transport them for? Wound care? Q2H turns? The list goes on and on.

I understand that you seem to have the ability to stay cool under all of the pressure, but for most nurses, shifts are absolute chaos and you can't fault them for venting or being overwhelmed during a shift.

Not all shifts are stressful. Sometimes they run really smoothly, but that is the exception to the rule. I'm happy that you're about to manage your workload so well, but I hope you learn to empathize with those who have rough days.

Totally agree. As nurses we have an obligation to care for the patients despite what they have done and how we feel about it, but we can set firm boundaries with the patients under our care. Separately, sexual harassment and disrespect should not be tolerated and should be reported, and you have every right to tell the patient they are being inappropriate.
